TKC 399 Technically Literate's Janis Cooke Newman

Editor-at-Large, CNET’s Technically Literate   Interview starts at 19:40 and ends at 43:30   We have a very different generation coming up who may relate to literature in a different way, because we have completely digital generations coming up. So I think those of us who present stories to the world have to be open to different ways to present them. And when we have a way to do it like we do in Technically Literate, that is an on-line way to do it, I think we always have to be thinking about pushing the boundary.    News “2016 Digital Book World Keynote Presentation” by Data Guy at Author Earnings - March 11, 2016 “Most everything you wanted to know about Data Guy: Revealed This Sunday in TeleRead” by David Rothman - March 25, 2016 Interview with Data Guy by Susan Lulgjuraj for TeleRead - will be live March 27, 2016 here. “Data Guy’s Web of Analysis: DBW Turns Hostility Into a Handshake” by Porter Anderson at Publishing Perspectives - March 10, 2016 “City re-introduces $30M Amazon contract for e-book marketplace” by Eliza Shapiro at Politico New York - March 22, 2016 “Banned by Amazon for returning faulty goods” by Miles Brignall at The Guardian March 18, 2016 “Return Too many items on Amazon? TKC 397 Andrew Albanese on Apple Refund

Senior Writer, Publishers Weekly   Interview starts at 19:24 and ends at 33:23 I absolutely think it’s madness to continue to push for regulatory input into the eBook market. Look what it did for you last time. Let’s just let the lawyers go away now. We’ve all articulated what we think the problem is in the market. Publishers came together to put the agency model in place, and they perfectly articulated the reason why they believe the agency model should be in place. I think that there’s got to be business solutions at this point.    News “Supreme Court Rejects Apple’s Appeal” by Andrew Albanese at Publishers Weekly - March 7, 2016 “Supreme Court Declines to Hear Apple’s Appeal in E-Book Pricing Case” by Adam Liptak and Vindu Goel at The New York Times - March 7, 2016 Hagens Berman press release on Supreme Court decision - March 8, 2016 “Apple’s $400M E-Book Payout: How Much You’ll Get and When” by Jeff John Roberts at Fortune - March 8, 2016 Department of Justice press release on Apple case - March 7, 2016 “The Cost of Returning Encryption to Amazon Fire” (video) at BloombergBusiness - March 7, 2016 “Jeff Bezos Lifts Veil on his Rocket Company, Blue Origin” by Kenneth Chang - March 8, 2016 “Why Jeff Bezos is finally ready to talk about taking people to space” by Christian Davenport at The Washington Post - March 8, 2016 “The Echo from Amazon Brims with Groundbreaking Promise” by Farhad Manjoo at The New York Times - March 9, 2016 “B&N is Shutting Down One of Its Top Three Digital Blunders on March 15” by Nate Hoffelder at The Digital Reader - March 3, 2016 “B&N CDO Fred Argir: We Must Win the Mobile Experience” by Daniel Berkowitz at Digital Book World - March 8, 2016   Tech Tips How to save an audio clip using the Audible for Windows 10 app (video and instructions) Kindle for iOS update   Interview with Andrew Albanese “Supreme Court Rejects Apple’s Appeal” by Andrew Albanese at Publishers Weekly - March 7, 2016 Stories by Andrew Albanese at Publishers Weekly   Content “How to Format Your Book for Kindle,” a web course by Bruce Jones. TKC 394 Novelist Jesper Bugge Kold

Author of Winter Men   Interview starts at 9:42 and ends at 43:24   I was very scared that it was translated into German. I really wanted it to be translated but still scared, because it’s like their war. I come from another country with another perspective on the war and write about their war and their forefathers. But the reception has been overwhelming. I’ve seen some reviews where they write that every college student should read this book, to read about their past. It’s a lot of responsibility to put on me, but some wrote that they are better able to understand their grandfathers better because of this book. That’s quite amazing.   News Anonymous “Data Guy” of Author Earnings does hourlong video interview with Science Fiction & Fantasy Marketing Podcast - February 16, 2016 Author Earnings website “Amazon Kindle sales up 200% in India” at The Times of India - February 19, 2016 “Kobo CEO faces uphill e-book battle against Apple, Amazon” at The Globe and Mail - February 19, 2016 Amazon press release on acquisition of new Woody Allen film - February 18, 2016   Tech Tip Guitar Tuna iPhone app   Interview with Jesper Bugge Kold Winter Men, available for pre-order with delivery March 1, 2016. TKC 393 Len Vlahos

Chief Executive Officer of The Tattered Cover Book Stores   Interview starts at 10:03 and ends at 42:09   I think it would be interesting for independent booksellers to experiment with selling eBooks directly, because it’s become much less device-centric. Tablets have in some ways normalized that world, and the notion that someone could build an open-source eReader app and that we could have direct relationships with publishers and sell eBooks is something I think worth exploring down the road. But it’s not a part of our core business. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Google do what they do really well. For us, we have limited resources and limited brainpower. I’d rather see us make our stores even better than focus a lot of energy on that.   News “Amazon exec to run digital efforts of Italy’s government” by Angel Gonzalez at The Seattle Times - February 10, 2016 Diego Piacentini featured on Amazon employee page “Working at Amazon” web site - includes signup for receiving email updates Amazon organization chart February 2016 Author Earnings Report “Digital Arachnid: What Does Author Earnings Say to the Industry?” by Porter Anderson - February 9, 2016 “My Bias (again)” by Hugh Howey - February 12, 2016 “Amazon’s bookstore buzz hits San Diego” at the Lost Angeles Times - February 11, 2016 Shelf Awareness “Amazon Books Roundup” - February 12, 2016 (scroll down to find it)   Tech Tip Amazon.com help page showing which Kindle you have “Critical Software Update for Kindle E-Readers” at Amazon.com   Interview with Len Vlahos The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) “Len Vlahos, ‘The ABA Guy,’ to Publish YA Novel" by Judith Rosen at Publishers Weekly - October 23, 2013 The Scar Boys by Len Vlahos “Joyce Meskis is selling Tattered Cover Book Stores after 41 years” by Aldo Svaldi at The Denver Post - March 26, 2015 Kobo eReaders and eBooks available for purchase at The Tattered Cover website Blue Ink Review Brewing Beneath the Perk: My Journey through a coffee shop business..to Me by Teri Meehan, reviewed in Blue Ink Review Tattered Cover Press: Books on Demand Scar Girl by Len Vlahos - available for pre-order (hardcover only), delivery March 1   Content Harry Potter: The Complete Collection by J.K. TKC 390 Jane Friedman

Helping authors and publishers flourish in the digital age   Interview starts at 12:44 and ends at 32:05   This question has become a little bit of a litmus test in the writing and publishing community. It’s almost interesting to talk about how other people react very viscerally to Amazon as a good or bad influence or factor. I do consider myself mostly neutral. Nothing about it, I feel, is wholly good or bad. Mainly, it’s just brought about this enormous change. And for some the changes have been good, and for others they’ve been bad.
