Book Review: Buddhist Boot Camp

Buddhist Boot Camp - by Timber Hawkeye This is a great little book. Timber was working in corporate America, until one day he realised it wasn't the life he was meant to be living. He decided to work part time in order to live full time. He sold all of his material possessions, reduced his expenses as much as possible, and moved to Hawaii. This book is the collection of emails he sent back to his family and friends, and it provides a great insight into some of the ideas and practices of Buddhism. We can all take these lessons and apply them to our everyday lives, whether we classify ourselves as 'Buddhist' or not. Choose Yourself

Choose Yourself - by James Altucher "Be Happy, Make Millions, Live The Dream"   The world has changed. Full time work is paying less and less, we're starting to see more part time and temporary work arrangements, inflation keeps going up, retirement will soon be dead... It's time to Choose Yourself. No one else is going to do it for you.  James talks about his daily practice to improve his physical health, emotional health, mental health and spiritual health. This book also talks a lot about the need to choose yourself and become an entrepreneur. This is a solid book for anyone who is an employee stuck in the 'prison' (his words) but wants to look out into the garden and see that there is more to life. The Game

"The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists" - by Neil Strauss Neil Strauss had only ever had one girlfriend and slept with six girls. He rated himself physically as a 5/10 at best. He thought that some guys had it, and some guys just didn't. Until he stumbled across the underground sub-culture of Pickup Artists. He learned the techniques, grew in confidence, and got to the point where he could seduce just about any girl that he wanted. This was a really interesting book. It's hard to believe in some parts, but it's real. Some techniques may be seen as evil. Most girls will say it doesn't work on them. Don't view this as a bible, but as an interesting insight into another world. All skills are learnable and confidence is the key. This book is a weapon, both physical and emotionally. It's a thick 550 pages and harnessing these techniques will give you a lot of power. Enjoying the show? Best of 2016

We thought we'd take the time to reflect on the year and remind ourselves of our favourite bits from our favourite books. In June this year, we started our podcast 'What You Will Learn' where we talk about the best bits from the best books. We read a book each week and discussed our favourite parts and the biggest lessons. It initially began as a way for us to read more books and extract more learnings from each book. Then, people started listening and it got a little more exciting!  In this episode, we look back at  our top lesson from each book, as well as a bit more discussion on our Top 5 favourite books we read in 2016.  We sincerely thank you for listening to our podcast and we hope it's helping you in some way. Initially we didn't think anyone would listen, but it was a good way for us to keep ourselves accountable, read more and get more out of each book. Hopefully the podcast has helped you learn a few things too.  If you have any books to recommend us to read in 2017, shoot us a message at www.facebook.com/whatyouwilllearn or send us an email to podcast@whatyouwilllearn.com - we'd love to hear from you. P.S: This is the photo that inspired the cartoon artwork.   Enjoying the show? Who Moved My Cheese?

Who Moved My Cheese? - by Dr Spencer Johnson 'An A-maze-ing way to deal with change in your work and your life'   This book was awarded Amazon's best selling book of all time and has sold over 26 million copies worldwide. It's a parable about two mice and two people searching for Cheese in a Maze. 'Cheese' represents the things we want in life and the things that make us happy, and the 'Maze' is when we're trying to find exactly what it is that we want. The book is a little cheesy (excuse the pun), but the messages are widely applicable. Everyone faces change, be that in their job, their relationships, their health or their financial situation, so everyone needs to be prepared to accept change, expect change, take control and move on. It's a very short and simple book, definitely worth the read.  Grab a copy here: http://www.bookdepository.com/Who-Moved-My-Cheese-Spencer-Johnson/9780091816971/?a_aid=adamsbooks   Enjoying the show? Matthew Michalewicz

Matthew Michalewicz is the author of one of our favourite books, Life in Half A Second. The book lays out the 5 steps to achieve success before it's too late: Clarity, Desire, Belief, Knowledge and Action. Matthew has shared some freebies with us: the first two chapters of his book are available here, and he has a free video series outlining the 5 steps at www.lifeinhalfasecond.com/challenge Matthew started his first business when he was 18. He became a certified Personal Trainer as a way to make money to pay for his college tuition. Since then, he's gone on to build and sell three businesses. Most recently, he sold SolveIT Software for 8 figures. He's currently building his newest company, Complexica, which harnesses Big Data and Artificial Intelligence to improve the effectiveness of salespeople. He hopes to one day float this company on the stock exchange. This was an incredible conversation. Matthew talked about his path to success and some of his life's journey so far, as well as some of his favourite books and the best investment he ever made.  You can grab a copy of his book Life in Half A Second here: http://www.bookdepository.com/Life-in-Half-a-Second/9780992286101/?a_aid=adamsbooks   Enjoying the show? Tribes

"Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us" - by Seth Godin Grab a copy here: http://www.bookdepository.com/Tribes/9780749939755/?a_aid=adamsbooks   The first author to get a second episode on the What You Will Learn podcast, and there's no one more deserving than Seth Godin. 'Tribes' is a completely different way of looking at leadership. It's about finding or creating tribes to lead rather than employees to manage. Seth shows us that tribes are everywhere; inside and outside of organisations, in public and private institutions, in non-profits, in classrooms, in culture, and all over the planet. There is no amount of experience or qualifications or specific demographics or skills you need to become a leader - you just need to choose to become a leader.  This isn't a 'how-to' book with step-by-step instructions for leadership. Instead, Seth does everything he can to convince us that we need to decide to take on the responsibility of leading a tribe. Read this book. You'll be convinced.   "Without leaders, there are no followers. You're a leader. We need you."   Enjoying the show? Way of the Superior Man

The Way of the Superior Man: A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Women, Work and Sexual Desire - by David Deida Grab a copy here: http://www.bookdepository.com/Way-of-the-Superior-Man-David-Deid/9781591792574/?a_aid=adamasbooks This was certainly an interesting read. The contention of the book is that everyone is made up of both masculine and feminine qualities, but most of us lean towards one more than the other. This is a book for the 'masculine' person, be that male or female, gay or straight. It takes us through how to become a 'superior man' and how the masculine should act and guide their more feminine partner. We don't agree with everything, but there's a lot of truth in this book - sometimes some uncomfortable truths. Our favourite chapter was Chapter 46: "Ejaculate up the Spine". Let your imagination run wild with that one, then listen to find out what the author actually meant... Enjoying the show? Chapter One

"You have the power to change stuff" Three 19 year old kids dreamt big. They realised that 1 billion were living in poverty and decided to do something about it. It's only the beginning of their mission, it's only 'chapter one', but they are on their way to changing the world. Thankyou Water took on the big corporates like Coca Cola and worked their way into big retailers like 7/11, Coles and Woolworths. The beauty is that 100% of all profits go to causes like providing fresh drinking water for developing countries.  Have a read, buy a bottle of Thankyou Water while you're thinking of what you can do, then go out and change the world.
