Taiwan Elected a New President. He Faces Big China Challenges

Taiwan’s new president has his work cut out for him, Michael Cunningham says.“He’s not in an easy position,” Cunningham, a research fellow in the Asian Studies Center of The Heritage Foundation, says of President-elect Lai Ching-te. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)“Beijing deeply distrusts” the political party Lai is a member of because China’s leaders think that party is “intent on seeking formal independence from China,” Cunningham says. While it’s likely Lai will maintain the status quo and not seek formal independence from China, Cunningham predicts China will continue applying pressure to Taiwan.During his presidency, Lai, 64, is “probably going to have to constantly be responding to provocations by Beijing,” he said. Lai, currently vice president, takes office May 20.Cunningham was in Taiwan during the election on Jan. 13 and joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why Taiwan’s freedom directly affects America. He also explains why he thinks it’s unlikely China will launch a full-scale invasion of Taiwan anytime in the near future.Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Biologist vs. Southern Poverty Law Center

Ph.D. biologist Colin Wright is publicly inviting the Southern Poverty Law Center to debate him on the subject of what the SPLC calls "anti-LGBTQ+ pseudoscience," specifically on the transgender issue. The SPLC released a 41,000-word report claiming that "the controversy over trans health care is manufactured to reinforce both white supremacy and the political goals of the Christian Right." The report claims to reveal "anti-LGBTQ+ pseudoscience," but it does not seriously address the concerns of critics of the transgender movement. The report mentions Wright, a Manhattan Institute fellow, as part of the movement pushing "pseudoscience.""It's almost not really worth responding to," Wright tells "The Daily Signal Podcast" of the SPLC report. "It is such a poor, poorly put together document, riddled with typos.""Most importantly, it justs makes all these accusations that I'm peddling 'pseudoscience,' that type of thing," he adds. "It doesn't engage with any of the actual arguments and the substance of what I'm saying, or what anyone else mentioned in the report is saying. There's not really anything to respond to."He calls the report "completely ridiculous.""It's purely just a smear piece," Wright says. "They just want to garner attention and stir outrage."Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Mississippi AG Lynn Fitch Introduces App Connecting Moms to Resources

Expectant mothers in Mississippi now can access resources to receive essentials, from food and clothing to child care and financial assistance, through a mobile app dubbed MAMA. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch on Tuesday unveiled the Mississippi Access to Maternal Assistance mobile app, or MAMA, to connect moms easily with the resources they need to care for their children. Mothers or pregnant women now can "find not only the public resources that are available but private resources and faith-based resources, all in one place," Fitch says of the new tool. "And that is so significant for young mothers to be able to find things that they need, questions they might have, all together."Fitch led the way on the legal case out of Mississippi called Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which ultimately led the Supreme Court in June 2022 to overturn its 1973 decision on abortion in Roe v. Wade. A year and a half later, Fitch says, the pro-life movement is working hard to provide women with easy access to what they need to choose life for their children. "Remember, we asked the court to give the responsibilities to us," Fitch says of arguments made to the Supreme Court in the Dobbs case. "So we're now embracing that. It is so important that we talk about it, we take action, we implement things that are important for these young mothers, mothers-to-be, and these children."Fitch joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how the MAMA mobile app can serve as a model tool for other states, as well as to celebrate the 51st annual March for Life, which takies place Friday in Washington, D.C. Enjoy the show! Back From Israel: Morgan Ortagus Recounts Stories of Trauma

Israeli leaders such as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “look like shells of their former selves,” commentator Morgan Ortagus says, following meetings in Israel earlier this month. But Ortagus, who was State Department spokesperson under President Donald Trump, says the weariness extends to the people of Israel, many of whom remain “traumatized” from the Hamas terrorist attacks Oct. 7. “The very existence of the state of Israel is threatened whenever they are attacked,” she says, adding, “It's a tiny country. It's a tiny people.""So when they are attacked, it's existential to their surviva," Ortagus says. "And we of course know that more Jews were killed on Oct. 7 than on any other day since the Holocaust. So I know that has to weigh with the leadership.” As host of “The Morgan Ortagus Show,” a new Sunday offering on SiriusXM Patriot, the former State Department official is using her platform, and her nearly two decades of national security experience, to communicate the history of tension in the Middle East and what America's role should be. Ortagus joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what she learned after meeting with Netantahu and other senior leaders in Israel and Saudi Arabia, and visiting some of the kibbutzim where Hamas terrorists tortured, raped, and slaughtered Israelis on Oct. 7. Enjoy the show! USA Boxing’s New Transgender Rule Could ‘Kill a Woman,’ Coach Warns

USA Boxing has changed its rules to allow men who identify as women to compete in the female category, a change that coach Cary Williams warns could be deadly. Even one man competing against women is “all it takes to do damage; that’s all it takes to kill a woman,” says Williams, a USA Olympic-level female boxing coach. “I’m extremely scared for the safety of our girls and our women in boxing,” she told “The Daily Signal Podcast.” The new policy requires males to meet specific hormone levels and to have undergone surgery to “alter” their gender. But Williams says the new policy does not acknowledge that men have “larger hearts, larger lungs, bone density, strength.”“You’re talking about muscle-fiber differences. Those are all something we’re born with,” she says. Williams, the founder of women’s fight-gear brand Tussle, joins the show to discuss USA Boxing’s rule change and what she thinks female boxers should do to stand up against the dangerous policy. Enjoy the show!
