Stay Off My Operating Table
Dr. Philip Ovadia
I was a morbidly obese heart surgeon. All through high school, college, med school and surgical training, I followed the U.S. dietary guidelines for both diet and exercise. Yet nothing I did kept the weight off. I just kept getting fatter and fatter. Each day in surgery, I would split open the chests of people just like me. I knew I was heading for the operating table myself if I didn't find solutions that worked. In 2016, I finally found a way to lose 100 pounds and keep it off. Now - in addition to doing heart surgery - I work to help people just like me get healthy, lose the weight and keep it off. I'm Dr. Philip Ovadia, the rebel M.D. and cardiac surgeon who is working to keep people off my operating table.http://ovadiahearthealth.com/whitepaper/Any use of this intellectual property for text and data mining or computational analysis including as training material for artificial intelligence systems is strictly prohibited without express written consent from Dr. Philip Ovadia.

Nayiri Mississian - a Type 1 Diabetic Who Defied the Experts - #49
"Just eat whatever you want and cover it with insulin."That was the advice Nayiri Mississian received as a type 1 diabetic. She learned that it didn't improve her blood sugars. No matter what she did, her blood sugars continue to rise. The one thing she didn't try was slashing the carbs from her diet.A chance encounter with Jason Fung persuaded her to adapt low-carb diet and extended fasting in her lifestyle. Her blood sugar improved. She took her bio-hacking even further with extended fasting. The "experts" say diabetics shouldn't fast. Yet she found that extended fasts helped to reset her insulin sensitivity. Her biohacking led to optimized health, stable blood sugars, and reduced insulin needs. She shares scientific information about low carbs and fasting on her website and social media platforms.Quick guide03:27 Maintaining a healthy lifestyle for a type-1 diabetic09:00 Being diagnosed 44 years ago16:39 The life-changing insulin pump22:18 What a higher A1c meant23:49 No breakfast against doctor’s advice25:43 Fluctuating blood sugars and its effects27:10 Beginning a low carb diet32:58 Eating meat and reducing blood sugar39:53 Adjust the insulin dosage based on activity & food43:50 The baseline of insulin needed to keep us functioning51:21 Difference of type 1 & type 2 diabetes58:59 Burning carb sugar or burning fatGet to know our guestNayiri Mississian is a type 1 diabetic. Dr. Chris Palmer MD - Brain Dysfunction is a Metabolic Problem #47
Dr. Chris Palmer is the pioneer in using low carbohydrate ketogenic diets to treat psychiatric patients suffering from treatment-resistant mental disorders. As a traditionally-trained psychiatrist, it was hard for him to believe the results his psychiatric patients experienced when they "went keto." He knew the ketogenic diet had been used for 100 years to treat epilepsy. He theorized that the therapeutic effects must extend to other mental illnesses. Dr. Palmer's results - both in the clinic and the lab - gives hope to people who suffer from brain dysfunctions previously thought to be incurable. Keto OG Ken Berry MD - #46
"Never take nutrition advice from a fat doctor."When Dr. Ken Berry tweeted that, he received a lot of blowbacks, but trust him, he knows what he’s saying. It is hard to listen to somebody when he can't even fix himself. In his mid-thirties, Dr. Berry was overweight and suffered from a wide range of health issues. As a family physician, he was aware of how terrible his nutritional advice was. And so, as part of his self-healing and his desire to help others to live healthy lives, he began to seek answers. In search for the optimal diet, the paleo-anthropological literature gave this clear answer: our ancestors ate fatty meats. This led him to the ketogenic diet. He made it a 30-day challenge at first, a temporary weight loss hack. He was losing a lot of weight, and his other medical problems – type-2 diabetes, chronic pains, severe reflux – were all gone. He recommended that his patients try keto for 90 days and the results were consistent. They started losing weight. The chronic pains were getting better. No more heartburn. Reversing type 2 diabetes. Reversing fatty liver. These results all begged the same question: was it because of keto?Dr. Berry's passion for good health and the benefits of the ketogenic diet came with a price. It hasn't been easy. But he refuses to back down. As long as he gets to help humans to be healthy and not be crippled by disease, there is no stopping him.Quick Guide:01:54 Dr. Ken Berry’s background06:56 His search for optimal diet through paleo-anthropological literature18:35 The ketogenic journey31:26 Why the ketogenic diet is more than just a fad35:59 Improving one’s health is improving the health of the planet42:45 Humans as carnivores throughout history49:19 The fad diet50:45 The mission for optimal health and the price he has to payGet to know our guest:Dr. Ken Berry grew up in Texas, studied medicine at the University of Tennessee, and became a family physician. Shawna Smith - An Idiosyncratic (and perfectly timed) Model of Health and Disease - #44
People are so used to the state of imbalance in their lives, but it should not be the norm. For someone like Shawna Smith who is strongly empathic and intuitive and has the natural ability to see people's strengths and weaknesses, she can evaluate how a body (or a part of it) is out of balance. This is how she helps people heal. The process is to find the connection points, to recognize the small issues and how they may lead to possible problems or major health concerns. But we have been so used to measurable healing, with CAT scans, blood work, and lab tests here and there, that we have overlooked other healing modalities.Shawna vocally stands for finding balance, striving for wellness, and acknowledging different healing therapies. Dr. Stephen Hussey - Understanding the Heart - #41
When we were young, we learned that the heart pumps blood in the body. Well, Dr. Stephen Hussey thinks we misunderstood the heart. Growing up, he experienced different inflammatory conditions and has type-1 diabetes, which puts him at risk for heart disease. It made him devote his attention to discussions about the heart. He simply wants to take in as much information as he can.Based on his studies, how did we misunderstand the heart? It begins with the fourth phase of water, also referred to as structured water or exclusion zone water. The human body is mainly composed of water, and when water holds enough energy, it comes in contact with a hydrophilic surface like our arteries and forms the fourth phase of water. The process creates an energy gradient for our blood to flow. It wasn’t the heart doing all the pumping. In this conversation, Stephen provides valuable information about the heart and the fourth state of water, what causes oxidative stress or inflammation (which may lead to heart diseases), and the importance of metabolic flexibility. Cynthia Thurlow - #40
The healthcare system is flawed if it forces you to see more patients for profit than to focus on patients to heal them. Cynthia Thurlow doesn't want any of that anymore. As a nurse practitioner, she has a lot of autonomy in patient care, yet she felt restricted because she can’t deliver the kind of care she wants. Her big move was to leave clinical medicine and choose the path she knows she can better help patients through lifestyle medicine and nutrition.Despite people who tell her she has no business giving nutrition information, she strongly speaks up about metabolic flexibility, intermittent fasting, and why she left the system so she can heal more people.
