47. Peter Beckman: How the wisdom of Ben Sira has impacted the church (Sirach, Ecclesiasticus)
Ben Sira (also known as Sirach or Ecclesiasticus) is one of our most important sources of ancient Hebrew literature. It is also one of 7 books that belong to the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical books of the Bible. We discuss a number of topics: The placement (or lack thereof) of Ben Sira in the biblical canon The different names for the book and what they show The author of Ben Sira The differences between the Hebrew and Greek versions The purpose, style, and message of the book of Ben Sira The unique prologue to the Greek version of Ben Sira How Ben Sira navigates challenges that people of faith deal with today How Ben Sira interprets Scripture The “canon consciousness” of Ben Sira We have a little debate about literacy and the target audience of Ben Sira How has the book of Ben Sira been used in the church throughout history up to today in different denominations How all wisdom should lead to worship and prayerWHERE TO FIND USPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/hebrewbibleinsightsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLRSNQ7xVw7PjQ5FnqYmSDAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/_hebrewbibleinsights/TikTok: www.tiktok.com/@hebrewbibleinsightsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/HebrewBibleInsightsWebsite: https://www.hebrewbibleinsights.com--- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matthew9793/supportJoin our Bible Study: https://www.patreon.com/hebrewbibleinsights WHERE TO FIND US Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/hebrewbibleinsights YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLRSNQ7xVw7PjQ5FnqYmSDA Website: https://www.hebrewbibleinsights.com

Genesis 1 has inspired deep study of Scripture and sparked intense debates amongst people of faith. We address a number of topics Gap Theory How do we translate Genesis 1:1-2? What is the Hebrew behind “formless and void” (תהו ובהו)? What is this referring to? We look at where the original Hebrew words are used in the rest of the Hebrew Bible An early scholarly theory is that a loaded idea of “chaos” is behind these words How does the ancient Near Eastern context impact our understanding of Genesis 1? We discuss Ugaritic and Akkadian literature Is the Hebrew word for “deep” a direct allusion to Tiamat from Enuma Eliš? 41. Retribution: How did Israel view God's involvement in the world?
How do the Hebrew authors portray that way that God gets involved in the lives of individuals and communities? How does this look in the New Testament, and how can we grapple with this question today? The hermeneutical principle of retribution is one of the most important worldview concepts of Israel and its neighbors. Reward and punishment (blessing and cursing) based on merit is one of the foundational components of how they viewed the world. In this episode, we discuss this topic at length. We talk about modern conceptions of retribution before diving into how the people of the ancient Near East interpreted events. We dive into a specific example from the Mesha Stele Inscription from Moab along with the corresponding story in the Book of Kings. We talk about New Testament stories and the challenge for the church today. We finish by going over a key passage in Jeremiah and conclude with the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil as well as Proverbs.
