Overcoming Career Setbacks - with Sacha Koffman (Ep 122)
I have always been fascinated by professionals that recover from career setbacks and achieve great things. Not just executives but also athletes, artists, politicians, etc. There is a great deal of effort into their recovery, from working on their mental health, remaining on course towards their goals, and ensuring they have the best team to provide the proper support and advice. I often wonder how they found the strength and wisdom to turn things around.About Sacha Koffman:Sacha Koffman is an executive with over twenty-five years of commercial experience. He's worked at some of the best-known global consulting firms and corporate brands, always in learning and leadership development roles. When Job Hunting Hurts: What to Do About It and How to Avoid Setbacks (Ep 120)
I have seen many amazing professionals give up on their job search for months or even years, because of what they perceived was a rejection, be it a lackluster reception of their interest in being promoted, or a job they applied for and didn't get. I spoke recently to someone who took two years to recover from a rejection from a job she applied for and believed it was a dream job for her. In fact, she was indeed a great fit for the role and went all the way to the final interview stage. But at best her chance was 50%, assuming there was another excellent candidate competing for the position. There is no reason to feel bad about missing out on a job opportunity. Taking too long to try again takes a toll on your career. That’s what I address in this episode, and offer ways to overcome the negative feelings so you can move on with your career. Am I a Generalist or a Specialist? (Ep 118)
Do you know if you are a generalist or a specialist? If you believe you are a generalist, you probably think of yourself as a jack of all trades. That is, someone who can step in and lead or do the job, regardless of sector or industry. You may be surprised to learn that you may not be exactly a generalist. On the other hand, if you are worried that you’re a specialist, your niche is too narrow, and you may not be able to advance in your career, guess what? You may also be mistaken!People think of generalists are jacks of all trades, and specialists are experts. But this may be a very narrow and limited view of the two labels. It all depends on the context, and this is where I see the mistake being made by professionals who try to explain themselves as generalists or specialists to recruiters and employers. Most define themselves as one of the other, and believe that whatever they think they are is the wrong thing to be!Listen to this episode to find out more about these two labels, how and when to use them, and when it's best to avoid them altogether!Read the full Blog on the WebsiteJoin 5,000+ Readers of The Job Hunting Newsletter: Subscribe NowLear More About Renata's career coaching and courses Links mentioned in this episode:Article from the Michale Page blog: Specialists vs GeneralistsAbout the host, Renata BernardeHello, I'm Renata Bernarde, the Host of The Job Hunting Podcast. Job Hunting as a Senior Executive - with Amber Knight (Ep 117)
If you are a senior executive listening to this show, or you one day want to advance in your career to become a senior executive, Amber Knight's experience job hunting as a senior executive is an important one for you to listen to. In this episode, we revisit my conversation with Amber, a senior communications executive, who has worked for the BBC and The Walt Disney Company. In March 2019, Disney purchased the film and TV assets held by 21st Century Fox for $71.3 billion. This was an enormous deal, and it reverberated down the company structure. It's expected that mergers and acquisitions will result in restructures, aka, redundancies. Amber and her team left Disney towards the end of 2019, and the pandemic prolonged her unemployment. This is a topic we discussed a few times during the last episodes of 2021, so if you are interested in learning more about long-term unemployment and how to handle it and avoid it, please listen to episodes 108 and 109.Read the full Blog on the WebsiteJoin 5,000+ Readers of The Job Hunting Newsletter: Subscribe NowLear More About Renata's career coaching and courses Links mentioned in this episode:Episode 108 - How Long Does It Take to Find a New Job?Episode 109 - Will the Great Resignation Affect my Job Search? The Job Hunting Made Simple ProgramEpisode 35 - "Let me call you back" - Recruitment trends shaping the job market, with Anita ZiemerAmber's favorite free resource: The Optimized Job Search ScheduleReset Your Career: Workshop & Action Plan To Get You Back On TrackLinkedIn video interview prep toolAmber's LinkedIn Article about The Job Hunting PodcastAbout the host, Renata BernardeHello, I'm Renata Bernarde, the Host of The Job Hunting Podcast.
