Women in the Church EPS 30: Dr. Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer on spiritual abuse, silencing women, abuse of power, pastors and how churches can be TOV (good)

This episode is coming to you for such a time as this.  With spiritual abuse, abuse of power, and sexual abuse becoming such common news in our time, we have to admit that there are many churches with cultures and systems that are unhealthy and even harmful.  If you are a pastor, a church leader, a congregant or just want to be a part of making a difference in a way that helps others flourish, listen in closely to the research and the harsh reality of what is happening on our watch. There is hope of how to do better, and how to be a part of creating goodness cultures together.   Our guests today are a father and daughter co-author duo who walked through a painful reality at Willow Creek church in Chicago, and that experience led them to want to help others.  Dr. Scot McKnight is a world-renowned speaker, writer, professor and equipper of the Church. He is a recognized authority on the historical Jesus, early Christianity, and the New Testament. His blog, Jesus Creed, is a leading Christian blog. Dr. McKnight’s books include The Jesus Creed, The King Jesus Gospel, The Blue Parakeet, The Real Mary, and Junia is Not Alone.  A sought after speaker, he has been interviewed on several radio and television programs as well as spoken at numerous local churches, conferences, colleges, and seminaries in the United States and around the world. Scot McKnight is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Society for New Testament Studies. McKnight’s books have been translated into Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Portuguese. You can find him, along with the other 50.5K followers on twitter at: @scotmcknight Laura Barringer is a teacher of primary-grade students. She is the co-author of Sharing God's Love: The Jesus Creed for Children and wrote a teacher lesson and activity guide to accompany the book. She is also co-author of A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing. Laura is a graduate of Wheaton College (IL) and currently resides in the Chicago suburbs with her husband, Mark, and three beagles. You can find her on twitter at:  @laurambarringer Buy their book and highlight it as many times as I did, because A Church Called TOV:  Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing, will likely be, outside of the Bible, the most important book you read this year.  Let's be TOV and create TOV systems and TOV churches together so we can all flourish. Stay In Touch: Connect on Facebook and Instagram with thoughts, questions, and feedback. Women in the Church EPS 29: Anna Morgan on the Billy Graham rule, sexism in the church, women pastors and developing leaders

Ever wondered what some alternatives to the Billy Graham rule could be so that women can still be developed as leaders as much as men can in the church? Anna Morgan has.  She not only has wondered, she has researched this topic and found some practical ways to address this issue so that women and men can both flourish in leadership spaces. Anna Morgan has been in full-time pastoral ministry for over twenty years. She has a background in worship and creative ministries and has been the executive pastor of the ministries of City Church Chicago, a ten-year-old multi-ethnic church in downtown Chicago, for the past five years. Anna is also a leadership coach and trainer, working to develop local church leaders around the US and Australia. Anna earned a masters degree in Global Leadership from Fuller Theological Seminary and is currently working on a doctorate of missiology at Fuller Seminary, doing applied research into the development of female leaders in local churches. Anna has been married to John Morgan for fourteen years and has three adult daughters. You can find her at City Church Chicago and on Linkedin and Facebook. Sheila Wray Gregoire is a popular speaker, marriage blogger, and the author of nine books, including The Good Girl’s Guide to Great Sex. Her latest book is The Great Sex Rescue that will be coming out in early March. It is based on the largest survey ever done of Christian women. Her passion is for marriage, and she and her husband Keith speak together at marriage outreaches and at FamilyLife Canada marriage conferences. Sheila believes in authenticity, and gives real solutions to the very real and messy problems women, and couples, can face. You can usually find her in Belleville, Ontario, where she’s constantly texting her two young married daughters and knitting. Preferably simultaneously. She blogs at: tolovehonorandvacuum.com where you can also find her resources that she has written and produced.  You can find the rubric she mentioned here, and a place to pre-order her latest book The Great Sex Rescue: https://tolovehonorandvacuum.com/gsr-rubric/She has resources to help parents have the sex talk with their kids ages 10-16 in her video curriculum The Whole Story, which has a boy version and a girl version that you can use on a weekend away with your son or daughter.  It is free from purity culture and statements that make girls and boys feel ashamed and trapped in ways some other curriculums have, and it makes it easy to talk about sex with you kid because the videos say the parts that are hard to talk about so you can watch with them.  Has she done us a great favor here or what? She even gives us advice on how to talk with our daughters about her first period in a way that's not creepy.Have a listen today, and pass this episode on to anyone that may need to hear it.  Sheila is a resource to get us to talk about sex in a healthy way.Stay In Touch: Connect on Facebook and Instagram with thoughts, questions, and feedback.
