279: The Gilly Episode - Money, Career, Religion, Faith, Death Re-Thought and the Myth of Retirement
At long last, our first interview! This man has been mentioned many times before on the podcast, and has played a significant role in both our lives... Michael Gill did have a glittering career, as a lawyer, and in various other engagements, but to us he is cherished more as a source of wisdom, companionship and guidance. He is a man of vocation and dedication, a source of joy and community to all those he encounters. He listens but tries never to judge.
He thinks deeply, and often throws around words like 'Helicopter!', 'Interconnectedness,' 'Not bloody siloism!', 'Peace and Joy' and of course, 'Just Be.' He's always there for those who need him, and has a sharp and beautiful sense of humour.
Though he'll say this is no good for his ego, I must say, we consider him to be quite ahead of his time, and he defies almost every stereotype you'd associate with someone of his age and standing in society. Affectionately dubbed 'Gilly' by those close to him, we wanted to commemorate and capture some of his beautiful insights in an episode.
This is dedicated not just to our dear friend, but to the intimate group of Gilly's companions who cherish him as much as we do. Here is a man who plants the seeds.

278: The Risk See-Saw, (We Don’t Understand Life’s Real Risks). PART 12, The Myth of Failure Series
Part 12 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ The conclusion to the series is another first-time idea, very Taleb-inspired, called ‘The Risk See-Saw’. It denotes that, trying to control for Small Risks creates big risks, but trying to avoid big risks makes us more sensitive to small risks… the theory is that most of us spend our entire lives worrying about exactly the opposite things we should be worrying about… and we end up creating them.
We hope you enjoyed the series. Thanks, and remember, keep opening Doors for others.

Part 11 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ The first time we’ve discussed ‘The U-Curve of Certainty’, a theory about nature, chance, risk, truth, predictions, generalisations and prescriptions, which helps us cut through the b.s. of life and wasteful planning. In contrast, we get clarity about what we can control and believe in.

Part 6 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ The Slingshot Principle is one of the oldest ideas on the WJW Blog, and details when the worst-case scenario is actually the best-case scenario from one perspective. Examples include the story of Nelson Mandela.

271: Experience is the real degree. PART 5, The Myth of Failure Series
Part 5 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ Revisiting the story of Tim Ferriss, who created ‘his own MBA’ by taking the $120k he would have spent on tuition, and investing it directly into companies over two years. With all my costly mistakes, I empathise with the idea that the only real degree is the experience itself.
