Whatever Happened to Matt & Jake?

This is Episode 100.My years in radio taught me to celebrate the milestones and accomplishments. No more so than the time I spent at 100.3 the Bear in Edmonton. Some background on why I decided to do this show.Back in January when I was planning out the shows for the next few months, I wanted to have Greg Brown aka Jake Daniels on. He and I worked together on 100.3 the Bear in Edmonton from 1994 to 2002, working on the afternoon show for close to 5 years. I never had more fun on the air than I did with Jake. A few days after I made that shortlist for the forthcoming guests on the podcast, Jake posted on his Facebook page that his Lymphoma Cancer had returned and he was going to be starting chemotherapy again. On Valentine's Day, old friends from the station in Edmonton, Dave & Leesa Beeson started a Facebook group and GoFundMe campaign for Jake. That campaign formed the idea of putting this podcast together, and from then I committed to making Episode 100 about Jake Daniels and our time together on air at the Bear.Last year, 100.3 the Bear celebrated their 25th birthday. I often suggest that radio stations celebrating a significant birthday or anniversary create a podcast series to commemorate that history. That's kind of what episode 100 is about. A reunion of a radio show that ended 17 years ago with two radio friends who really enjoy one another's company.I could have just picked up the phone and called. But we did a podcast instead.By the way - this podcast is made more enjoyable because the of the people who took time to contribute to it. Thanks, Marty Forbes, Greg Diamond, Todd James, Terry Evans, Laura Fraser, Cubb Carson, Chris Maksylewicz, Ron Weslosky, Yukon Jack and Rob Vavrek... and Dave and Leesa Beeson whose idea became the inspiration for this podcast. Apologies in advance for not mentioning everyone - we just didn't have a 4th hour in us.Free plug for Jake's store! http://www.pickerjake.com/ The show is brought to you by Nlogic! http://go.nlogic.ca/l/130651/2018-05-11/s7fy5There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogicSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Randi Chase: Up and Down the Dial

Randi Chase epitomizes the lyric in the WKRP theme song, "Town to Town; Up and Down the Dial." The lyric conjures up images of jocks, successful or fired, who shuffle on to the next gig with a new town and call letters. Randi worked in 6 of Canada's top 10 markets before turning 30. After taking a year off to find out what happens when you take the radio out of Randi, she is back on air and having fun with in her favourite province with Vinnie Taylor on Newcap's Real Country 95.5.I had the chance to work with Randi in Montreal and never stopped following her career as it progressively took her west. If it sounds like two old friends catching up, it's because it is.This episode is powered by NLogic.ca - Just by visiting our sponsors you support the podcast. http://go.nlogic.ca/l/130651/2018-05-11/s7fy5Other Sponsors we encourage you to support:Radio Pepper Prep http://www.pepperprep.comAiden Wolf Voiceovers http://www.aidenwolf.caPromosuite - http://www,promosuite.com/soundoffSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Brian Munz: Growing Up Humboldt

The Humboldt bus accident that claimed the lives' of 16 people on April 6, 2018 led to a worldwide outpouring of grief and support. In the hours after the crash, the lives of players, coaches, team support staff like a statistician and therapist were also lost; as well as Tyler Bieber who was the play-by-play host and worked at 107.5 Bolt-FM in Humboldt. Brian Munz grew up in Humboldt. I spent some time with him to talk about what calling Junior hockey is like and to find out more about the close relationships that are created on and off the ice between players and broadcasters.I also spoke with Don Scott from the Western Academy Broadcast College in Saskatoon. The broadcast school has created the Tyler Bieber Memorial Scholarship for students requiring financial aid in hopes of becoming apart of their great alumni; the likes of which from just the hockey side include Darren Dutchyshen (TSN), Peter Loubardias (FAN 960 Calgary), Brian Munz (TSN 1290 Winnipeg), Darren Dreger (TSN), and Daren Millard (Sportsnet). Western Academy is funding the ongoing yearly scholarship to provide a legacy to the memory of sports announcer Tyler Bieber and the 15 other Humboldt Bronco hockey team members and staff. Applications for the Scholarship are available on the WABC website at http://www.wabc.ca Two songs appear in the show: Tom Cochrane's BIG LEAGUE FOR HUMBOLDT © 2018 Sky Is Falling Inc., (Universal Music) and Jason Smith's HUMBOLDT STRONG (LEAVE A STICK BY THE DOOR).All ad revenue from this episode will be donated to the Tyler Bieber Memorial Scholarship at the Western Academy Broadcast College, so share it far and wide.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Gerry Forbes: Retired and Lovin' It!

When Gerry Forbes announced his retirement, you can forgive CJAY 92's competitors for letting out a silent cheer. For over 25 years in Calgary, Gerry's morning show has been in the top three in a market that is sharply country. In preparing this episode, I reached out to some of the people who had worked with and against Gerry. People like Bob Harris who was his program director throughout the 90's; Terry Dimonte who went up against him from 2008-2012; and Gerry's brother Marty who spent his career in Edmonton, and on the management side.I reached back and asked Gerry about some of the more memorable stunts that he conjured up, what makes Calgary so great, and how one listener would use the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council process against him. This episode is powered by Promosuite. http://www.promosuite.com/soundoffSpecial thank to our new sponsors (outside Canada):Radio Pepper Prep http://www.pepperprep.comAnd Aiden Wolf Voiceovers http://www.aidenwolf.caSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Sales Strategies with Scott Howard of WOWO

When Scott Howard made the change from on air to sales, he will be the first to tell you that he didn't get it right away. His first opportunity came at WMUZ in Detroit where he freely admitted that he made a lot of mistakes. Over time, he became more engrained in the sales world and started sharing his wisdom on a blog http://sclohonet.blogspot.ca/ and then in time on a podcast. Most episodes clocking in under 10 minutes. Scott currently works at one of America's oldest and most reknowned radio stations - 1190 AM WOWO Fort Wayne Indiana. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-genuine-scloho-media-marketing-podcast/id1223012914?mt=2&ls=1&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 I discovered Scott in an online forum called Radio Sales Cafe http://www.radiosalescafe.com. What sets Scott apart is his genuine approach to sales: Telling the truth and not being fake. Similar advice that programmers convey to on air talent. Lauryn Schaffner is a writer, blogger, YouTuber, and overall lover of Rock music. On this week's show we ask how her passion for rock music took her down this path, and find out what role radio played in getting her there. Not surprisingly, radio did play a role. She is living her rock and roll dreams by writing for alternativenation.net, and she recently started vlogging on her YouTube channel. As we found out during our conversation, she's had the YouTube channel since 2008 but used to it post her favorite videos, which earned hundreds of thousands of hits in an era prior to Vevo. On her page, you will find conversations with Taylor Momsen, The Pretty Reckless; Shaun Morgan, Seether; Josh Kiszka, Greta Van Fleet; and Myles Kennedy. She has had to endure her unfair share of abuse and, she recently graduated with a degree in criminal psychology from Florida State University. "Music has been an enormous part of me as long as I can remember, and the experiences I have been given since I started writing for AN (Alternative Nation) pushed me to be honest with myself and follow my passion."Lauryn currently works for Loudwire! So why doesn't that passion have a radio component? I do get around to asking her.Lauryn will be on tour wherever great rock festivals are taking place. You can subscribe to her Youtube channel here Or e-mail her here to integrate her into your brand. laurynschaffner@yahoo.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
