Jenna Mosher's Ruthless Restructuring

In late August, Jesse and Jenna from Jump 106.9 in Ottawa were restructured out of their jobs. That's probably not news as it is a regular occurrence in radio. However, their replacements were a syndicated U.S. show out of Seattle. The ensuing online and media outrage was heavier than in other cities where layoffs happen. Jenna Mosher was kind enough to spend some time talking about her career which started in hometown Vancouver and moved to North Bay, Niagara, and then to Ottawa in 2014 when rock station 106.9 the Bear became Top 40 Jump.Since Jesse and Jenna's departure, they have started "Jesse and Jenna's Messy Podcast" with the help of fellow Ottawa radio personality John Mielke from Blast the Radio. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogicSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Giving Thanks on Thanksgiving

I really love Thanksgiving. In Canada we celebrate it as a tribute to the bountiful harvest. There are a lot of people who enjoy it more than Christmas which gets lost in a sea of wrapping paper and Amazon deliveries. So in my turkey comatose, I offer up a word of thanks to those who support the show every week; and that ranges to anyone from a listener, to a sponsor, to simply sharing or following the social media accounts. I also provide insight into what it takes to make this podcast run every week, and answer a few questions that frequently come my way.If you would like to launch your podcast - I would love to work with you. Being Graham Mosimann

Graham Mosimann does evenings at Calgary's alternative X92.9. I hired Graham back in 2014 to work at Power 97 in Winnipeg and decided to call him up and see how he was doing. It has been neat listening to his progress as a performer, and equally amazing watching his personal journey as he drops weight and makes life changes as he goes. As Graham tells me, he was a mess, became a bigger mess after he was fired from Power 97, and slowly began to get his life together shortly after. It's an honest conversation about doing the things you need to do to be your best on the air.He also tells us about his excitement working with Christian Hall who was the subject of an earlier episode. Fred Jacobs: 35 Years of Jacobs Media

Fred Jacobs was a guest on Episode 53 in a preview to the Broadcasters Meet Podcasters sessions at Podcast Movement in 2017. I have always wanted to do an episode where we looked back at the evolution of his company and a tweet on the 35th anniversary of the company's creation reminded me that it's a good time to have that chat. We cover the creation of classic rock, his transition from the WRIF in Detroit to Jacobs Media, and his relationship to Buffalo where had a great success, a small failure, and a life long September 11th memory. We also talked a bunch about the discipline in writing a daily blog, the age of acceleration, the importance of non-radio conferences like the CES and Podcast Movement and the importance of networking, meeting people and attending cocktail parties.Resources:Subscribe the the Jacobs Media Blog - you won't regret it.The CES Webinar which was highly talked about at The ConclaveFred mentioned the name of Kashmir Birk whom he sat with on a panel, you can connect with his LinkedIn page here. Finally, please support the podcast - everything helps.

Jason Barrett: Cheers to Three Years of Barrett Sports Media

Jason Barrett celebrated the third anniversary of Barrett Sports Media last week, and we have an annual podcast chat to talk about the state of Sports Radio. After three years of doing anything, you have entrenched yourself into the landscape well enough to speak reflectively, so I asked him about the trials and tribulations of shifting from programming radio to partnering with radio. He blogs, podcasts, works with sports radio brands across America, and I have admired his work and always appreciate the perspective he brings to the podcast when he comes on as the NFL Season gets underway. If you have time to listen to this podcast - make time for his as well as he has many of the thought leaders from radio industry on his show which comes out on a regular basis. Jason is also an avid wrestling fan; we did not get a chance to cover this on the podcast, but back in the 2000's he did a wrestling show that had more downloads than anything else at the station he was working at.  In this episode, we talk about the changes with Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, how Tony Romo did in his first year and how to deal with Kaepernick situation, when it unwittingly becomes a story.By the way, if you like what you hear and want to work with Jason, he is really good at working with your teams short term in advance of ratings or when the staff are all together. OR even better - send your staff to the Barrett Sports Radio Summit in Los Angeles in February. (e-mail Jason for more) There more about this episode on our show page!

Matt Sutton Comes From the Land Down Under

Matt Sutton comes from Australia. There was a time when having people with funny accents was novelty. Then it became common place. With the advent of Youtube, Facebook and people consuming their media globally, it's not a thing anymore. In 2012, I had the delight of bringing Matt to Canada as we launched Fresh-FM in Winnipeg. The best part was bringing him over from Brisbane's B105 and introducing him to Canada... in February. There were subsequent promotions like "Make Matt a Winnipegger" and his "Lyrical Conversations" which still get talked about today. One thing that did come up a few times in this podcast, in the role that community played in his development, and the development of Australia's most successful morning duo, Hamish and Andy. It's something that is not as prominent in North American radio because of the sheer volume of stations. Matt is now the afternoon drive host at Z95.3 in Vancouver and he loves it more than he thought he would. But he's still loyal to the Winnipeg Jets and Blue Bombers.

James Cridland: Radio Futurologist

James Cridland is a radio futurologist. He will tell you he got that name because he printed it on his business cards, but he does possess a keen eye to where radio is headed. He is the man behind Podnews, a daily e-news letter and companion 2 minute podcast delivered daily. He also heads up the Next Radio Conference which will be taking place in London on September 17. In this episode, James and I talked about the accelerated pace the podcast industry is moving at, Google's impact getting into the space, and how much is radio's future is tied to podcast. We also did a little podcast marketing 101, discussing some best (current) practices and what's it going to take for podcasting to be on level footing with radio. You know - the kind of thing that you would expect to hear from a radio futurologist on a podcast like this.Subscribe to Podnews Daily Newsletter https://podnews.net/Podnews Daily Audio Delivery https://pod.link/1325018583Next Radio Conference Information And the recent article James penned about Understanding Podcast Ratings. https://podnews.net/article/understanding-podcast-statisticsThere's more about this episode on our show page!

Jonathan West: Getting Down to Some Real Talk

Jonathan West is a passionate about a few things, including two of our favourites, hockey and radio. We eliminated all the hockey talk from the podcast but I will bring him back at some point on "The Other" podcast to chat it up in February when the playoff races take hold. It was good to catch up with Jonathan at the Conclave, and he mentioned he was going to be at Morning Show Bootcamp, so he promised me an update on that and I would pass along my Podcast Movement notes to him.Aside from being a talented radio personality, Jonathan is also a great hockey writer, which is where I first encountered his work. Californian born, southern raised and a hockey goalie. Quite the mixed bag. He's covered a lot of hockey and pointed out that 13 of the 14 outdoor NHL Classics have ended in losses for the home side. Sorry gang - this podcast is all radio and music. And we had some "real talk" about our business which says that it believes in talent, yet 4 in every 10 on air personality goes without an air check. We think that is unacceptable and if you don't get regular air checks, you can come to Canada where the health care is free - and the air checks are free. Logan Anderson Says the Damn Score

Logan Anderson is the host of the Say the Damn Score Podcast. He loves being a sports broadcaster and found out that podcast was a great way to network and meet new people in his field. Guests have largely been the familiar voices that call games for places like Fresno State, South Dakota, Ball State, and Bradley. But there's also the Milwaukee Brewers and National icons like Bob Costas and Ian Eagle. It's more than just a podcast; his blog features lots of great insight and information like calling "buzzer beaters" (yes there is an art to it), and his thoughts on the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash. (Full disclosure: I did not know that he had written the blog piece before I asked him on the podcast)After exchanging phone calls every few months over the last few years, Logan and I met at the Conclave Summer Learning Conference in Minneapolis last month. Minny is now home for Logan and his family. If you have a sports opening at your station in the area - do not hesitate to call him up if you like what you hear. logan.kdsn@gmail.comIn this episode, we talk Conclave, Sports, our favourite play-by-play callers and what networking is like these days.
