Eric Zane: Broadcast InZanity

This week's show features yet another broadcast icon who I've been a fan of for a long time. Eric Zane is one of many former radio hosts who've made the transition into podcasting, and he's done it more successfully than most. Back when I met Eric in 2019, I knew him from the Free Beer & Hot Wings radio show out of Grand Rapids, Michigan- a show he'd just begun to pivot away from to debut his own podcast. But this was 2019, and it wasn't so easy back then to make the switch.Eric was one of the first to pick up on the new wave of monetization for podcasting, a wave we're all still riding to this day, and The Eric Zane Show remains a gold standard podcast 3 years later. Together, we talk about how he managed to make that switch, the stumbles he made along the way, and which avenues for support have been the most successful for him. We also dive into his storied radio career in Grand Rapids, where he still lives.Something we didn't get a chance to talk about on the show, but that I definitely think should tell you a lot about Eric's character, is the time he donated a kidney to an old friend from high school. Check out his Fox News interview about it, or read the full story here. And here's a fun fact, for those who might not know Eric or his show: he puts out two episodes per day. One for his regular free show, and one exclusive episode for his Patreon supporters. This means that he's put out over 800 episodes total in just three years. As a podcast producer myself, the amount of work that schedule would require not only gives me an anxiety attack, but also a massive amount of respect for Eric's work ethic and dedication to his show.If you want to learn more about Eric, you're in luck- he just happens to be one of the most connected podcast hosts out there. Of course there's website, where you can (and should) listen to his show, but you can also follow him on Twitter, Facebook, or YouTube, support him on Patreon for exclusive bonus content, or even join his Subreddit r/TheEricZaneShow to become a part of his community.PHOTO CREDIT: Photo: Brian Kelly Photography & FilmA thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free. The CHR Prep Service - Click to get a free trial.nLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. For a Complete Transcript of this episode See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Jamie Cawdell: Producer Jamie

Jamie Cawdell is the Assistant Programme Controller at Radio Essex in England. He is also the curator the CHR Prep Service which is used on radio stations around the world including Virgin Radio in Canada and Z100 in New York. Over the years, we have seen many of radio's best branch out into other facets of the business. Whether it was John Mielke in the 90's starting his Milkman Unlimited business, Matt Fogarty or Drake Donovan shifting from Creative to voice imaging, or Bob & Sheri or Humble and Fred taking their show independent, there is always entrepreneurial latitude in the radio space. In this episode you will hear how Jamie got started in radio, the ins and outs of producing a breakfast radio show, and why he started the CHR Prep Service. We also get into what preparing for your show really constitutes and what radio talent is looking for before they head into the studio every day to perform OR record. If you are a regular listener to the show, please consider the one month free trial Jamie is offering. And we thank our other supporters including:nLogic for the data assistance. Aaron Rand: Calling Gaddafi and other Radio Tales

Aaron Rand has been on Montreal radio since the 70’s. I didn’t catch on to his show until the mid 80’s where he became a household name, despite working at some radio stations that weren’t known for their ratings. Right around the time AM started its decline, Aaron Rand’s show started to take off. I ran into Aaron at (what I think is North America’s best restaurant) Joe Beef while having dinner with another Montreal radio icon, Terry Dimonte. The next thing said at the table was pretty obvious – although i think it might have been a look… ya gotta get him on your show. His radio career includes all the great Montreal radio Call letters like CFCF CKGM, CBC, CHOM, CFQR and now CJAD where he once worked and now resides doing the afternoon show.It is always a joy to speak to someone who you grew up listening to – Aaron Rand joins me from what appears to be his kitchen in Montreal.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.

Sylvia Alvarado: What Happens on the Air in Vegas...

A lot of radio personalities are initially attracted to the medium because of the music. But some hosts, like Sylvia Alvarado, go far beyond a passing interest. As the midday host on KOMP 92.3 in Vegas, she's had incredible interviews with some of the biggest stars in rock music: Slash, Pat Carney from The Black Keys, Zakk Wylde, and Matt Schultz from Cage The Elephant, just to name a few. She's also a musician herself- She's sung the national anthem at games for the Vegas Aviators and the Golden Knights. Sadly, there isn't much footage out there, but when you consider that you only here about anthem singers when they mess up - this may be a good thing. (We do have a clip on our episode page)In this episode, Sylvia and I run through her history with music and radio, from her beginnings as a student at UNLV and a humble intern at KOMP all the way to her current position as the midday host. Even if it seems like she's a natural fit for radio, she had her fair share of struggles. We go over how she finally gained confidence in herself after 2 years (!) on the air, and how she tackled a few broadcasts in Spanish. We also go over the fierceness of creating and running promotions in Vegas, which is pretty much the global capital of promoting things. If you're listening from Vegas, you can hear Sylvia from 10am to 3pm on 92.3 KOMP. If you're not, you can also listen live on their website. (Yes even you Canada)To connect with Sylvia and learn more about her, you can follow her on Instagram and LinkedIn.Click Here for a Transcript of the show. Also a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service. Marty Forbes: Return of the Wiz

Every time we have a radio veteran on the podcast, the conversation shifts to the future of radio at least once. But it's always about the future with Marty Forbes. He always has had an eye towards it. It's no secret that the broadcast industry is struggling to keep up with the times. But few guests have quite the depth of insight into radio's slow demise that Marty Forbes brings.A lifelong Program Director, VP and GM at stations like CKFM 99.9, the Bear in Edmonton, CISL, CKKS, CJAX, CKSL, and his first gig at CHNL in Kamloops, Marty knows the ins and outs of broadcasting in a way few others can match. He's seen far too many stations fail to meet the shifting tides of the media market, or more commonly, hurt themselves worse in the attempt. In 2009, Marty started Radiowise Inc. to help as many companies as possible to launch, rebuild, and evolve while avoiding these issues. However, since he decided to shut down Radiowise, now seems liek athe right time to ask him about the specific problems he's seen. Together, we dive into the challenges radio stations face in 2022, the way many companies are failing to address them, and the problems with the CRTC's stagnant grip on broadcasting. We also discuss Marty's extensive catalogue of public service efforts, but did not have a chance to list off the specifics. He's a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for community service, and he's been directly involved with a staggering number of charitable organizations: The Jerry Forbes Centre, Santas Anonymous, the Edmonton Singing Christmas Tree, Crescendo, and the John Cameron Changing Lives Foundation. If you want to hear more from Marty, you can check out his blog, Marty's Musings, where he talks about everything from business advice to travel planning. Buzz Knight: Takin' A Walk

One of the better legacies the pandemic was people rediscovered the value and simplicity of taking a walk. There's something magical and simple about wandering around with someone you love to talk to and immersing yourself amongst the fresh air and conversation. This week Buzz Knight returns to the Sound Off Podcast. In February 2019, Matt Cundill and Buzz Knight talked about his previous podcast Healthy Paranoia. Buzz’s new one is called Takin' A Walk, and it's themed around Buzz simply going for a walk with guests, and having incredibly insightful conversations about their careers and what they see on the walk.Buzz is a radio veteran having spent most of his career as a Radio Executive at Beasley, and CBS Radio. As such, the guests are often connections he's made through his career, but they also include people like authors, athletes, musicians, and business owners. Buzz’s podcast aims to "embrace the mindfulness associated with walking along with the beauty of storytelling and conversation".In this episode, we reconnect with Buzz about what he decided to start Takin' A Walk, and he shares some anecdotes about the unique challenges presented by recording a podcast while walking around the streets of NYC, Boston, Chicago or wherever he finds himself. We backtrack to Buzz's time in radio, and his company, Buzz Knight Media, which works with other media companies to develop their business strategy. To get in touch with Buzz, you can follow him on Twitter or LinkedIn, or visit the Contact section of his website.Click Here For A Full TranscriptAlso a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service. Nails Mahoney: On Air Coach

The show has been very Canada-centric for the last few weeks, so it felt like there was no better time to bring on a broadcast legend from another part of the world. This week's guest, Nails Mahoney, has been hosting top-rated radio shows in Ireland and the UK for decades. He's also worked as a TV presenter in Ireland, and performed onstage as a stand-up comedian and keynote/guest speaker at more than 30 workshops like TEDx Dublin. But don't drift away yet, our Canadian audience! Nails has also spent time in Canadian radio, including several years at Q107.On this episode, we talk about his path through radio, and some of the differences between Irish/UK radio and the scene in Canada. For example, did you know that the rock and grunge movement of the 90's never really made it over to Ireland? We also talk about Nails' current projects and future plans, including ONAIRCOACH, his private coaching service for on-air personalities. Nails shares a lot of insight about how he coaches different types of talent and why he felt the need to start the service in the first place.Later in the show, we touch on two of his biggest and most recent endeavours:The 5th annual RadioStar contest, a tournament between up-and-coming broadcasters to bring some notoriety to their name, and The Radio Space, a social media site designed specifically for people in the broadcast industry to mix and mingle. If you're in radio and sick of using Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook (and all the unrelated crud that comes with those sites), this is the place to be. As their website says, "Think Facebook but ONLY for radio! No Algorithm. No ads. YOU are in charge of what you see."With that being said, if you're not in the radio industry, you should still follow Nails on LinkedIn and Twitter. If you have any radio coaching questions, he'll be happy to help you out.Click Here For A Full TranscriptAlso a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service. Adrian Harewood: The Power Of Change

It's not unusual for me to bring old friends onto the show. In fact, a good chunk of our episodes have come about because of existing connections I've had in the broadcast industry. What is unusual, though, is for me to bring on a friend from all the way back in elementary school- one who's also had an incredible broadcast career, and who until recording this episode, I hadn't spoken to since 1984.This week's guest, Adrian Harewood, has been with the CBC since 2006. Once upon a time, he was the host of a little radio show called All In A Day on CBC Radio One, but in recent years he's moved in front of the camera and into our homes. He's currently the host of CBC News Ottawa at 6, and has been a guest host on other CBC shows like As It Happens, Sounds Like Canada and The Current. He's also a full-time Professor of Journalism at Carleton University. I'm not the jealous type, but those are some lucky students. It may also interest you to know that before his time at the CBC, Adrian also hosted a radio show on CKUT, the radio station for his Alma Mater, McGill University. The show was called Soul Perspective, and was dedicated specifically to discussing the issues faced by Black Canadians, such as racial inequality, racial profiling, and notably, homophobia in the black community. In this episode, Adrian and I catch up on lost time by discussing his past, present and future. We walk through his time at the CBC, the changes he's seen, and how and why he became a professor. We also talk about his recent appearance on the Canadaland podcast with Jesse Brown, where he took the time to give an inside report on the systemic racism he's seen in the media and at the CBC. You can listen to that episode here. For more of Adrian, you can follow him on Twitter. If you're in Ottawa, you can also see him every night at 6:00 on CBC News.Click Here For A Full TranscriptAlso a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service. Click to get a free trial.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
