186: The problem with fluoride

For decades we’ve been told that fluoridation of water helps prevent cavities, but science doesn’t support that claim. As a matter of fact, fluoride is a waste product that is so toxic it is not allowed to be dumped in our landfills, and yet somehow it is routinely added to our water supply. Today, Integrative Biological Dentist Dr. Griffin Cole explains the history of water fluoridation and how this practice is negatively impacting our health. Systemic fluoride interferes with our hormone balance, the thyroid, kidneys, and more. He also explains how we can personally avoid fluoride in our diets and the water, and how to defend our rights to clean, fluoride-free water in our communities. 184: What is homeopathy?

Ananda More was skeptical about homeopathy until she fell ill during a trip to India. She took the two little "sugar pills" figuring she had nothing to lose. Now, Ananda is a homeopath herself and the filmmaker behind the movie "Magic Pills: Promise or Placebo?" In today's conversation, she covers the science behind and the benefits of homeopathy, the ancient system of healing.  Ananda explains how homeopathy follows the principle of "like cures like" and how surprisingly effective its micro doses of natural substances can be in helping the body heal. 183: Is sunscreen okay to use?

For decades, we’ve been told to protect ourselves with sunscreen from the sun’s harmful rays or risk getting skin cancer. However, melanoma has increased, in tandem with the use of sunscreen. What’s going on? Today, clinical scientist and hormone expert Dr. Elizabeth Plourde weighs in on the sunscreen debate and discusses why sunscreen may be doing more harm than good. Elizabeth has done extensive research on the chemicals in sunscreen and gives us clarity about how they are impacting coral, marine life, and our own. She explains how the ingredients mess with our hormone health. She gives us the keys to a diet that works as a kind of “solar protector,” and sheds light on the role that electro-magnetic frequencies play in making us more vulnerable to the toxins in sunscreen. She also gives us insights as to why the medical community is not making this information more widely known. In sum, Elizabeth opens our eyes to the scope of the problem emanating from our use of sunscreen and what we can to curtail its detrimental impact. 181: Food lies exposed

Chances are, your great-great-grandmother didn’t obsess over what she ate. She didn’t count calories, measure out carbs, or worry about the fat content of what was on her dinner plate. And chances are, she was healthier than you and me! Nutrition doesn’t have to be as complicated as we've made it out to be. But if it’s so simple, where did we go wrong? Filmmaker Brian Sanders, of the documentary "Food Lies," exposes the food lies that have added to our confusion and wrecked our health. In today's conversation, he suggests we ditch dietary dogma and return to ancestral wisdom. Brian covers how we've lost touch with our own instincts when it comes to eating, what's behind food fads that appear "healthy" at first blush, why meat has been deemed "unhealthy," and why it's critical for this generation to turn things around.  To support the movie "Food Lies," go to "Food Lies Post" on Indiegogo. For more on Brian's work, visit Sapien.org. 179: The oiling of America

Unfortunately, traditional fats have been replaced in many kitchens by so-called "heart healthy" processed oils and spreads. Today, Sally Fallon Morell, the President of the Weston A. Price Foundation, explains how detrimental this is for our health. She discusses who is behind this push and why. She busts the myth that high cholesterol has a role in chronic illness and heart disease. She helps us understand why we actually need cholesterol in our diet, how the food we consume does not affect the cholesterol in our bloodstream, and why statins are not the answer for avoiding heart disease. Sally goes deep and wide, examining the flawed research that has led us to where we are today and making a strong case for why we should embrace traditional fats like butter, lard, and tallow, rather than demonizing them.  Subscribe to Sally's blog at nourishingtraditions.com.
