Black Queer Tarot

Challenging outdated, non-inclusive decks of the past, the BLACK QUEER TAROT takes the traditional 78-card Tarot arcana and remakes them with a diverse cast of muses.  Kendrick Daye is a multimedia artist and designer, living in Harlem, NY. His diverse approaches to making art include art direction, bespoke design, music, and most notably collage - both digital and analog. Kendrick aims to create work that imagines a future where Black queer life is prosperous and thriving.  Justin Henry, spiritual consultant for the Black Queer Tarot, has been using their eight years of tarot experience to ensure that each design accurately depicts the meaning of each card in the tarot deck. Not only this, but they are the sole author of the entire guidebook of 156 meanings that others may use to inform their own readings. They are a graduate of Columbia University with a degree in Psychology and Sociology, a self-taught makeup artist and the Founder and Practitioner of Tarot Supreme.  Together, the three of us discuss the importance of representation in Tarot, the complications of taking on the role of reader, oracle, or guide, and the need for vivid imagination in both Tarot and queer life. Language and Tarot with K. Leigh Clapp

Evolutionary oracle K. Leigh Clapp is a professional Tarot reader from Frederick, Maryland. In her work and writings, she draws upon her vast knowledge base spanning from religion and science to mythology and metaphysics. A Deaf scholar-mystic fluent in American Sign Language and English, Leigh sees translation as a potent act of alchemy. Her name sign evokes images of illumination and blooming. IN THIS CONVERSATION Leigh shares rich insights on language and its companions - symbol, metaphor and syntax - and discusses what gets lost in translation when moving from an oral or signed language to a written one.  We were also joined by ASL-English interpreter, Andrea Rehkopf, who voiced for Leigh and signed for Nick. A video of this interview is available to watch on YouTube. A transcript of this podcast is available online at manofthecards.com/transcripts. Follow Leigh on Instagram @liminalsight. Contemplative Tarot with Morgan Glover

Morgan Glover is a tarot contemplative, former journalist, and working mother who's on a meandering journey toward finding her place in the earth community. She approaches tarot as a practical, poetic, and philosophical discipline, and is drawn toward questions of an eco-soulcentric nature. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in sustainability and environment, and sees no contradiction in reading her textbooks with a deck in hand. She shares her tarot musings on Instagram @mojoglo. IN THIS CONVERSATION I speak with Morgan about her refreshingly open approach to interpreting the cards and the way she uses the Tarot to ground herself in the here and now. We also talk at length about her love of Uusi decks, particularly the Pagan Otherworlds and Materia Prima, and she shares how the cards have become an ally in deepening her relationship with poetry and the written word. Outsider Tarot with Bobby Abate

Bobby Abate is a queer artist, filmmaker, activist and Tarot aficionado from Brooklyn, New York, and creator of the new OUTSIDER TAROT. An outsider himself since the first grade, Bobby found refuge in the underground world of provocateurs, artists, queers, and punks. His introduction to the Tarot was through the Tarot of the Cat People at the age of seventeen. Ever since, he sought to create a deck that paid homage to all the beautiful misfits who live by their own rules. Bobby spent eight years researching and creating the OUTSIDER TAROT, which marries ancient esoteric systems with the revolutionary spirit of the boundary-breaking forward thinkers that have left an indelible impression on his life. Visit @bobbysweetkitty on Instagram to see his other artworks. IN THIS CONVERSATION Bobby and I discuss paths to understanding the cards for those of us who live outside of the mainstream narrative, and his eight-year process of researching, channeling and refining his new work of art, the OUTSIDER TAROT. Politics of Tarot with Alana Davenport

My guest today is Alana Davenport, who brings over 20 years of Tarot practice and social justice activism experience to writing about Tarot. Alana is a full-time parent of two young children and holds an interdisciplinary Master's Degree in Humanities & Social Thought from New York University, a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland, and all of the accompanying debt. Alana’s next project is writing a book on reading Tarot politically, based on content from her/their Instagram account @politicsoftarot. IN THIS CONVERSATION Alana and I discuss her work in social activism and how she allows her strong sense of justice to inform her approach to the cards. We also hone in on Three of Swords as an ally in the often painful work of unlearning, and speak at length about my business name "Man of the Cards" and why I have chosen to keep it even after my own journey with gender and identity. Alana’s new Tarot & Politics zine will be available for purchase by donation via @politicsoftarot beginning September 24. I am honored to be one of the featured writers in this first edition, alongside many other brilliant tarot readers, teachers, and thinkers.
