How capitalism and racism hold back a COVID-19 cure

The capitalist mode of production is slowing the development of vaccines including for COVID-19. When the polio vaccine was developed in the 1950s, inventor Jonas Salk famously compared the absurdity of patenting the polio vaccine to “patenting the sun.” If a vaccine is treated as a commodity instead of as a public good, the price paid is in human lives lost. A global pandemic must be matched by a global effort. The World Health Organization and European Union have launched plans to coordinate efforts on vaccine research and production — efforts the U.S. has so far refused to join. The effort to produce and distribute hundreds of millions or billions of vaccine doses is staggering but can be achieved through international cooperation for the benefit of all. Trump attacks Trans health during pandemic

The Trump administration is attacking Trans health access during this pandemic! The latest attack takes the form of an expected rewrite of the Affordable Care Act, which protects trans people from discrimination in healthcare. The rule’s rewrite has been a long time in the making. In May 2019, HHS proposed allowing healthcare workers permission to deny care to LGBTQ patients for "religious" or "moral" reasons. Now, the HHS is looking to formally finalize this assault and legally permit discrimination against Trans people. In a survey conducted in 2017, 29 percent of trans people reported that a health care provider refused to see them due to their gender identity, and 12 percent reported being denied care related to gender transition services. Considering the level of discrimination that already exists, this could open up the floodgates of anti-trans medical bigotry across the country. Paramilitary invasions in Venezuela: Made in USA

In the early morning of Sunday, May 3, the National Bolivarian Armed Forces of Venezuela along with the Special Actions Forces of the Venezuelan National Police repelled an armed invasion by speedboats off the coast of La Guaira, less than an hour from the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, recalling past U.S.-backed paramilitary invasions in Latin American states such as the Bay of Pigs in Cuba and the Contras in Nicaragua. As we go to press, the government has issued a maximum alert, with other terrorists having been apprehended in Chuao, west of La Guaira, and other plots suspected. Venezuelan authorities captured various weapons such as 10 rifles, a Glock 9mm pistol and 2 machine guns along with loaded cartridges of various calibers. Other objects captured were identification documents, satellite telephones, uniforms (including a helmet with a U.S. flag on it) and two notebooks detailing the operation, known as “Operation Gideon.” Reports have stated that from eight to 10 invaders were killed in the first encounter, along with two being captured. One of the captured is reported to be an agent of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Read the full article: https://www.liberationnews.org/paramilitary-invasions-in-venezuela-made-in-usa/
