Ep 1 Part 1 - 1800-1919: From Imperial China to the Century of Humiliation Part 1
The first class in the series is devoted to tracing the decline of the ancient imperial order in China under the combined attacks of Western imperialism and domestic rebellion in the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries. China was the most prosperous and sophisticated state in the world through the end of the 18th century, but the Industrial Revolution gave Britain and, later, other Western powers, both new economic power and new military capacities. Britain sold massive amounts of opium to China, then fought a war to open the country to “free trade” when China tried to control the drug dealers. The collapse of China’s domestic economy led to major rebellions, and efforts at reform of the Qing state faltered. When the last imperial dynasty was overthrown in 1911, a period of turmoil followed as Chinese people sought new paths to save their country from imperialist domination and to create a more just and equitable society.

On Saturday, June 6 Philadelphians came together for one of the largest protests in the city in decades, demanding justice for George Floyd, victims of police brutality, and all those who face racist oppression.
Approximately 100,000 people assembled by the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in a rally organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation. 73 years after ‘al-Nakba’ in Palestine
May 15 marks the 73rd anniversary of what is billed in the U.S. and Israeli mainstream media as Israel’s “independence,” and what the Palestinian and Arab peoples as a whole know as al-Nakba—the Catastrophe. To make way for the creation of the Israeli settler state, more than 80 percent of the Palestinian population was driven out of their homeland by means of terror.
Washington played an irreplaceable role in the formation of Israel. The U.S. government continues to provide billions of dollars annually and vast supplies of modern weaponry to perpetuate Israel’s continued role as a key instrument in U.S. domination of the strategic Middle East region.
Originally published in 2008, this article has been edited to reflect the passage of time. Richard Becker is the author of Palestine, Israel and the U.S. Empire.

White coats for Black lives: Healthcare workers’ solidarity with the uprising
“I can’t breathe.” The current nationwide uprising against racism is taking place in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Health care workers on the frontlines of the struggle against the virus are acutely aware of the connections between systemic racism and the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on Black, Indigenous and Latino people. On a visceral level, doctors and nurses hear the words “I can’t breathe” from their COVID-19 patients–the exact same words repeated by Floyd George as he was being killed by Derek Chauvin.
Healthcare workers are standing up to say that they are not only interested in treating the physical symptoms of illness in their patients, they want systemic change to foster health and wellbeing and an end to institutional racism in medical care.

#SayHerName: Breonna Taylor would have been 27 today
Today Breonna Taylor would have been 27-years-old. But on March 13, Louisville police murdered Breonna in her own home while she was asleep. An EMT with plans of becoming a nurse, Breonna put her life on the line as a first responder amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Two months after her murder, none of the racist killer cops responsible have been arrested.
Like George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor’s name has been repeated throughout growing rebellions against police brutality and racism that have swept the country over the last 10 days. Hundreds of thousands of people are standing up and demanding justice for their sisters, brothers and communities being brutalized by police terror.
