Eric Balchunas of Bloomberg Intelligence: Explosive Growth in the ETF Era
Eric Balchunas is Senior ETF Analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. In this interview, the fund expert and author of The Bogle Effect discusses how and why investors continue to flock to ETFs versus traditional mutual funds and other investment vehicles. Even in a year where many investors remained shell-shocked for a while after 2022’s lousy market performance, ETF flows are up to around $250 billion because Exchange Traded Funds offer 6-10 major advantages. Still, what Eric calls the “Bull Market Subsidy” has ensured mutual funds retain a 2-to-1 advantage over ETFs when it comes to total assets. Eric next discusses the SEC’s fight with fund issuers over spot Bitcoin ETFs, noting that the regulatory agency just lost a key lawsuit. He believes there’s a 75% chance a round of 5-7 crypto-focused funds will hit the market in coming months, providing “a bridge from the normal, especially Boomer, world, and the crypto underground”. He also covers the growth in single-stock ETFs, funds that allow investors to go long or short individual names like Tesla (TSLA) on a leveraged and unleveraged basis. He notes “The marketplace is just responding to what the investors are demanding” and says critics shouldn’t compare “hot sauce” to their “main dinner.” Finally, Eric gives a sneak peek at what he’ll discuss at the MoneyShow/TradersEXPO Orlando, set for Oct. 29-31, 2023 at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate. He discusses the reasons behind the seasonal weakness, while also explaining why investors are better served by rotating their holdings rather than retreating from markets entirely. Plus, he reiterates his call for a strong year overall, in part because S&P 500 earnings trends should improve in Q3, Q4, and beyond.Furthermore, Sam covers why the Federal Reserve is likely done hiking interest rates, why the latest employment and inflation trends are so encouraging, and how the presidential election cycle should benefit stocks. Barry Ritholtz: Market Crises, Clickbait, & Behavioral Economics
Barry Ritholtz is Founder and CIO of Ritholtz Wealth Management. He is also a long-time market analyst, commentator, and expert on behavioral economics principles as they apply to investing. In this insightful interview, Barry discusses the perils of paying too much attention to “hair on fire” headlines like recent ones about China’s credit issues, rising interest rates, and the risk of recession. He notes that “The clickbait stuff is entertaining, but it’s not how we manage assets and it’s not how individuals should manage their own assets.” Barry also discusses how humans are wired to make quick judgments, use pattern recognition, and overreact to certain stimuli because that aided in our evolution and survival as a species. The problem? “Things that worked great on the savannah, they don’t really work well in capital markets.” Our talk then pivots to Barry’s outlook for Federal Reserve policy, why he thinks a higher inflation target than 2% makes sense, how the 60/40 portfolio didn’t really “fail” last year, and what investors can do now to adapt to a higher-rate, higher-stimulus market environment. Finally, Barry gives a sneak peek at what he’ll discuss at the MoneyShow/TradersEXPO Orlando, set for Oct. 29-31, 2023 at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate. Jeff Hirsch: How to Navigate the Stock Market's "Worst Months"
eff Hirsch is Editor-in-Chief of The Stock Trader’s Almanac. In this interview, the long-time researcher of stock market seasonals and historical trends explains why the “Worst Months” are striking again on Wall Street, and how the action in 2023 is following the typical annual pattern. Hirsch warned of exactly this occurring recently, explaining that stocks would likely go on “summer vacation” in August and September – and advised investors to be less aggressive as a result. The good news? It’s still a pre-election year, and Jeff believes his forecast of a “plus 15%-20%” advance for stocks is still on target. He also thinks the Federal Reserve is just about finished hiking interest rates (if not done already). Plus, he says the economic backdrop isn’t too bad, the market pullback is fixing the frothy sentiment problem, and the political cycle is favorable for stocks in the fourth quarter and potentially beyond. Finally, Jeff gives a sneak peek at what he’ll discuss at the MoneyShow/TradersEXPO Orlando, set for Oct. 29-31, 2023 at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate. David Rosenberg is Founder and President of Rosenberg Research.
