So I bring to you, a special man, one of our brothers in the Great Man Within Community who has a particular gift for alchemizing words into medicine with his poetry. In fact, he’s written a poem especially for you, listeners of this podcast, as a wake up call and invitation for you to step into something bigger. That man’s name, is Robert Joseph. Robert is a leader of men. He coaches men and he runs a men’s group called Raised by Men. Robert is one of the original members of The Great Man Mastermind 1.0 and is a beloved brother who’s gift of poetry was something he’d kept hidden from the world for 4 decades… …until he found the courage in our mastermind to share his gift for the first time in a public way. And in so doing, he blew all of us away. And now, he’s no longer hiding that gift…he’s sharing it with the world. Today he’ll be sharing 3 poems, which are sourced directly from his heart, speaking directly to your soul. Spoiler alert: expect some goosebumps and chills. To highlight this, I ran a poll on my Instagram account this past week where I asked 4 questions (150 responses): #1. Did your personal development journey strengthen your relationship with existing friends or cause tension? 44% strengthened 56% caused tension #2. When you began your journey, did you have a friend also working on that, or did you go at it solo? 27% friend 73% solo #3. Did you feel supported by or resistance from your friends? 48% supported 52% resistance #4. Did you end up saying goodbye to old friendships? 83% yes 17% no So, the bottom line is, as you grow, and as your priorities change it can cause friction with your existing relationships…AND it represents a powerful opportunity to consciously create the pack of men you want to surround yourself with now and into the future. Joining Bryan and I for today’s discussion is our special guest Jay Washington. Jay is one of the most visible, vocal and influential men in our Great Man Within Communities. Most of our efforts to change our behaviors, to go after what we want in life, fail. They fail not because we lack motivation, but because changing our behaviors is the wrong place to start. We must start with changing our identity. Your identity, who you believe yourself to be, is the single biggest driver of your actions, the goals you set, the relationships you enter, how you feel about yourself, and what you believe yourself capable of. So the question becomes, how much of your identity have you chosen…and how much is unconscious? James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, may have a clue for us. He says: “The word identity was originally derived from the Latin words essentitas, which means being, and, identidem, which means repeatedly. Your identity is literally your “repeated beingness.” Said differently, the repetition of your thoughts, the repetition of your actions, the proof and evidence you’ve collected along the way forms your belief systems about yourself. But all of those things are rooted in the past. Your present day identity is much more an artifact of the past than a conscious creation of the future. Those repeated thoughts, actions, outcomes, all happened in the past. Which begs the question, from this point forward, who is the man you are determined to become…and what are the daily actions you will take to bring that man into being?
