Our American Israel: The Story of an Entangled Alliance
“Our American Israel is masterful and deserves a larger audience.” —Ta-Nehisi CoatesLive from Prime Produce (@PrimeProduce), Shoshana Brown (@shotimelive) moderates a discussion about Amy Kaplan's (z"l) book Our American Israel: The Story of an Entangled Alliance with panelists:Social Activist and Professor Andrew Ross (andrewtross.com)IfNotNow (@ifnotnoworg) co-founder Simone Zimmerman (@simonerzim)Journalist and Professor Moustafa Bayoumi (@mousbay, moustafabayoumi.com)"In 1945, it was not inevitable that a global superpower emerging victorious from World War II would come to identify with a small state for Jewish refugees, refugees who at that time were still being turned away from the United States. How, then, did so many in America come to feel that the bond between it and Israel was historically inevitable, morally right, and a matter of common sense. Our American Israel reveals how Israel’s identity has long been entangled with America’s belief in its own exceptional nature. Beginning at the end of World War II with debates about the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine and continuing through both the rise of evangelical Christian Zionism and the war on terror, Amy Kaplan challenges the associations underlying this special alliance." - Harvard University PressShow SocialsX @BeyondThePaleFM IG @BeyondThePaleFMFB @BeyondThePaleFMHosts@RafaelShimunov on Twitter@rafaelshimunov.bsky.social on BlueSky@ShoB on Twitter@Rafternoon on IG@shob18 on IGSupport the ShowBecome a BAI Buddy of Beyond The Pale at wbai.allyrafundraising.comLeave us a voicemail, we'll play it on airRecord a question or statement to play on air at (917) 740-8971 or via the Spotify app.You can also listen to our show live, every Friday after @DemocracyNow at 9AM on WBAI 99.5 FM NY.Thank you to our radio engineer, Michael G Haskins, and our researcher Margo Flug.

Comedian Noam Shuster-Eliassi
Noam Shuster Eliassi is an activist-comedian who writes and performs in Arabic, English and Hebrew (with a touch of Farsi — her mom Iranian born, her dad a Jew in Palestine whose parents fled the Holocaust from Romania), frequently touching upon her experience growing up in “Oasis of Peace” (Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam), a mixed community where Palestinians and Jews live together by choice. Her satirical videos have gone viral throughout the Arab world. In 2019, Noam became the first Jewish performer to play the Palestine Comedy Festival. Noam’s one-woman show “Coexistence, My Ass!” was developed at Harvard and received a four-star review at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was just honored at Sundance as the Winner of the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Freedom of Expression.Shoshana (@shob) and Rafael (@rafternoon) also talk about the news, including the Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (@jfrejnyc) seder featuring their endorsed Mayoral candidates Zohran Mandani (@zohrankmamdani) and Brad Lander (@brad.lander) with intro by JFREJ staffer Leo Ferguson (@fergusonleo). See Noam LiveAfter a sold out debut, Noam Shuster-Eliassi (@noam_joon) and Fouad Dakwar (@notfouad) are bringing their show back to @theasylumnyc on SUNDAY, APRIL 27 at 2:00PM! Ceasefire? With Linda Sarsour
Linda Sarsour is an author, award-winning racial justice and civil rights activist, an OG community organizer, and mom of three. She's a Palestinian Muslim American, one of our dearest friends, and likely the future President of an independent Republic of Brooklyn.
We opened with audio from Palestinian Journalist Anas al-Sharif as he removed his helmet and vest after the ceasefire deal was announced. He spoke those words on the shoulders of revelers celebrating the news.

Jewish Voters Call In with Katie Unger
We play and discuss listener messages about voting. We’re joined for the first half by our guest Katie Unger, the co-founder The Jewish Vote (TJV) at Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ).We also talk about propositions on the ballot in New York, the Working Families Party ballot line, and the protest write in campaign in the NY10 Congressional district, where voters are writing in Palestinian child ‘Hind Rajab’ in opposition to Rep. Daniel Goldman, a Republican Jewish ad featuring Hymie’s, a famous Philadelphia deli, in an effort to flip Jewish Democrats for Trump in swing state Pennsylvania, and Elon Musk’s duplicitous ads in swing state Michigan, attempting to pitt American Jews and Arabs against each other.
