EP278: Rethinking Intelligence: Challenging Misconceptions and Embracing Our Potential with Dr. Rina Bliss

In today's episode, I speak with Dr. Rina Bliss, a leading expert on the nature of intelligence and its cultural significance. Dr. Bliss, who is a professor of sociology at Rutgers University, has spent over a decade researching the misconceptions surrounding intelligence and its assessment. In her latest book, Rethinking Intelligence: A Radical New Understanding of Our Human Potential, Dr. Bliss challenges the conventional wisdom that intelligence is a fixed, innate trait determined solely by genetics. Drawing on cutting-edge research, as well as her own experiences as a mother and a sociologist, she argues that intelligence is a complex and dynamic process shaped by a range of factors, including stress, connection, play, and mindfulness. Join us as we delve into the fascinating world of intelligence and its cultural significance. Dr. Bliss' hope is that this episode challenges us to rethink what we know about ourselves, our children and our human potential.-------------------------------Links Discussed in This EpisodeOrder a Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living and Parenting with SimplicityConnect with Dr. Rina Bliss:WebsiteInstagramTik TokShow Notes for EP278: Rethinking IntelligenceEnjoy this Podcast?Post a review and share it! If you enjoyed tuning into this podcast, then do not hesitate to write a review. EP276: “My Family of 6 Lives in an 830 Sq Ft House BY CHOICE—And We Have No Regrets” with Andee Martineu

In the midst of the pandemic, while everyone in tiny apartments was looking to trade up to a larger home, Andee Martineau did the opposite. She and her husband sold their 7,000 square foot home in Arizona and moved their family of six (plus two kids in college) into a cabin by a lake in Utah. Andee went from having a two-story home with two kitchens and two laundry rooms to a two-story cabin with only two bedrooms and one bathroom. Yes: one bathroom. They weren’t broke, rather worn down. The fairy tale is the big house, but the reality was that Andee spent all of her time cleaning the 15+-room home, keeping up with 1.5 acres of land, managing the pool and raking the lawn. She desired for more time with family, but with all that space sometimes they were so spread out in the house - she'd had no idea who was doing what...In this episode, Andee will be sharing her story of how she made this decision, what inspired her to choose this path, and how it has impacted her family's life. She will talk about the benefits and challenges of living with less, including spending more quality time with her family and lightening the mental load that comes with having too much stuff.-------------------------------Links Discussed in This EpisodeOrder a Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living and Parenting with SimplicityBeneficial Resource: The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk M.D.Beneficial Resource: Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. EP275: Unlocking the Secrets of Effective Parent-Child Communication with Emily Kline

In today's episode, I sat down with Dr. Emily Kline to discuss how Motivational Interviewing (MI) can be used to facilitate healthy communication between parents and young adults. Often used in healthcare settings, MI is a communication style that focuses on making positive changes, such as reducing drug or alcohol use, taking medications regularly, and other lifestyle improvements. However, Dr. Kline has adapted these techniques to help parents communicate with their young adult children more effectively. In this insightful conversation, Dr. Kline explains how parents can build stronger relationships with their children by using the principles of MI.By approaching difficult conversations with curiosity, asking good questions, listening carefully, repeating back what you heard, and giving advice effectively, parents can create a partnership with their children that fosters mutual respect and understanding. Join us as we explore these important techniques for making hard talks easier.-------------------------------Links Discussed in This EpisodeOrder a Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living and Parenting with SimplicityBeneficial Resource: The Good Life by Robert Waldinger Connect with Emily:Website: Dremilykline.comInstagramShow Notes for EP275: Unlocking the Secrets of Effective Parent-Child CommunicationEnjoy this Podcast?Post a review and share it! If you enjoyed tuning into this podcast, then do not hesitate to write a review. EP273: Giving Your Kids Clothing a Second "Life" with Hand Me Up

As parents, we all know how quickly our children outgrow their clothes, and how tempting it can be to simply throw them away and buy new ones. But with the life cycle of kids' clothes being much shorter compared to adult garments, this can lead to a significant amount of waste. In 2018, the EPA reported, 17 million tons of textile waste ended up in landfills, compared to the 2.5 million tons that were recycled, it's clear that their work is more important than ever. That's where small business (and my guests today), Hand Me Up comes in! Hand Me Up's mission is to promote a circular approach focused on reuse and repair, which is key to extending the life of textiles. Join me for this interview with founders, Kara and Nicole to learn more about their inspiration, mission, and impact. -------------------------------Links Discussed in This EpisodeOrder a Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living and Parenting with SimplicityDiane's Resource: How to Sustainably Decorate Your HomeConnect with Hand Me Up:Website: https://handmeupshop.com/InstagramFacebookShow Notes for EP273: Giving Your Kids Clothing a Second "Life"Enjoy this Podcast?Post a review and share it! If you enjoyed tuning into this podcast, then do not hesitate to write a review.
