Looking towards some of the all time greats, Robinson sought to harness the dark romance of rock 'n' roll through stories and images, all while leaving room for the listener's own interpretation.At the same time Robinson was focusing on the album's many tales, he and the band were cranking away in the studio. For the Happiness Bastards sessions, the band wrote many more songs than ultimately don't appear on the record. "I did not want to sit in makeup for hours and hours and wear a latex hood," he explains. "The guys and girls who play the walkers, they deserve medals, because they bake in the sun. They're in very uncomfortable positions, and they're wearing all this makeup, and have to get in earlier than us in the morning and leave later than us at night. That's the hardest job on that show."
