I love reading Paul's prison prayers (Ephesians 1:15-23, 3:14-21; Philippians 1:9-11, Colossians 1:9-12) because we see the heart of what the apostle desired for us. Amid this trial, Paul didn't pray the believers in Ephesus or Philippi would live their best life now. He didn't pray for material blessings, but his focus was on the spiritual and the unlimited and glorious blessings we have from being in Christ. Wisdom in God's ways is something we should all desire to seek as believers and to pray for others that are in Christ. As I've been reading in Isaiah, it has struck me how often God is not the first place I turn to when I need help. I may look to myself, my husband, or a friend, and although those aren't necessarily bad things it isn't where I should be turning to first. Isaiah 9:6: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. One of the aspects of the life of Christ that stands out to me is that Jesus never seemed to be in a hurry. Those who know they have received mercy, show mercy. And the merciful are greatly blessed, because they will receive mercy from God himself. We all know what it feels like at times to be hungry or thirsty, but there are a hunger and thirst that should be far more concerning to us that we are going to dig into together today, and it’s not talking about physical hunger but spiritual hunger. It’s a hunger that will not be satisfied by food or water but only by God. Augustine said: "Thou has made us for thyself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in thee." The good news is Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:6 that our hunger and thirst can be satisfied: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
