Do struggling Lakers, Suns, Warriors portend the end of super-team era? | Good Word with Goodwill

Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill is joined by Marcus Thompson II from The Athletic to discuss the report that Darvin Ham is losing the Lakers’ locker room, the Warriors’ future and the potential end of super teams.00:00 - Welcome to the Good Word02:05 - Disconnect between Darvin Ham and the Lakers locker room07:20 - Changing of the guard for NBA superstars21:15 - Golden State Warriors31:55 - Draymond Green42:20 - Phoenix Suns46:35 - The Western Conference is loadedOn this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill podcast, Vincent Goodwill is joined by Marcus Thompson II from The Athletic for an episode that is mostly about the young NBA superstars coming for the crown from the veteran superstars that have run the league for decades.First, the guys discuss the report from The Athletic that there is a growing disconnect between the Los Angeles Lakers players and their head coach, Darvin Ham. Marcus and Vinnie go back through history to show that the Lakers have always been quick to blame the coach when they start losing and this time is no different. In talking about LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the attention quickly shifts to what is going on in the NBA this season. Even with those two guys playing well, the Lakers can’t seem to win. Are we turning the corner into a new era of NBA basketball, where young stars aren’t afraid of veterans and young teams with depth can outlast the super teams?Marcus covers the Golden State Warriors closely, and that dynasty seems to be staring the end in the face. He and Vinnie talk about if there’s anything the team can do to build another championship contender around Steph Curry, as well as the team’s complicated relationship with Draymond Green. Finally, the Phoenix Suns are already showing some signs that the grouping of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal might not work as hoped. This is a team that the Suns mortgaged their future for. Between them, the Lakers and the Warriors…is this the end of the super team? Are teams with more depth now more dangerous in the playoffs?Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports Podcasts

Siakam’s future in Toronto, Quickley’s upside & Anunoby’s fit with the Knicks | Devine Intervention

Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by Blake Murphy from Sportsnet to go deep on the trade that sent OG Anunoby to the Knicks and what it means for both teams.00:00 - Count me in!03:15 - Jordan Clarkson’s triple-double05:25 - Emotional reactions to Knicks-Raptors trade14:00 - Pascal Siakam’s future in Toronto25:55 - Immanuel Quickley’s potential33:35 - RJ Barrett’s potential38:35 - OG Anunoby’s fit with the Knicks46:45 - What do the Knicks do next?54:20 - How will Quickly fit with Scottie Barnes?56:45 - The Closing Five68:35 - Weekly recommendationsOn this episode of Devine Intervention, Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by Blake Murphy from Sportsnet to go deep on the trade that sent OG Anunoby to the Knicks and what it means for both teams, but not before the guys talk about finding joy in Jordan Clarkson’s triple-double for the Utah Jazz.Dan (a Knicks fan) and Blake (a Raptors fan) talk about their immediate and emotional reactions when they heard of the trade initially and how those feelings have changed in the days since. One big shoe left to drop for the Raptors is if they intend to trade away Pascal Siakam in a similar fashion and what they would be looking for in return if they did. After running through some fake trades for Siakam, Blake explains why he is happy the Raptors targeted Immanuel Quickley, who has the potential to end up as the best player in this deal and will see a lot more time on the court in Toronto than he did in New York.RJ Barrett was the 3rd pick in the NBA Draft behind Zion Williamson and Ja Morant. He’s still only 23 years old. So why was he talked about recently as a “toxic asset” and how will he fit in with his hometown Toronto Raptors?Dan is looking to find out which opinion of OG Anunoby is the right one. Is he overrated or underrated? Blake Murphy explains that it depends on context and the goals of the team that he’s on, making it sound like the Knicks found exactly the right player for their team. Will they make another move before the trade deadline or wait until the offseason to swing for the fences? The Raptors are building their team around Scottie Barnes, and adding Quickley to their offense should afford him more spacing to work with. Which player will benefit more from playing with the other?Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports Podcasts

Vinnie knows Tom Thibodeau, and he says Anunoby is a perfect player for Thibs’ system. After talking about the trade, and maybe a little bit about the College Football Playoff and the end of the Cowboys-Lions NFL game, Vinnie gets some help from Producer John in handing out New Year’s resolutions to some of the most interesting teams in the NBA this season. What should the Pistons be looking for after a disastrous 2023 season? How can the Lakers be bad on offense when they have LeBron James and Anthony Davis? Is there finally reason for optimism in Chicago? Can the Nuggets repeat? Is it time to believe in the Clippers? Is it too much for the Mavericks to depend on a 19-year old rookie to be the backbone of their defense? We go through all of these questions and attempt to answer them in a fun episode that bounces around the NBA.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports Podcasts

LeBron turns 39 & do the Celtics have the right offensive philosophy? | Good Word with Goodwill

Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill is joined by Gary Washburn from The Boston Globe to talk about the Celtics and LeBron James’ longevity.00:00 - Gary Washburn joins the Good Word06:50 - Aaron Gordon bitten by a dog09:55 - Boston Celtics12:10 - Why the Celtics had to trade Marcus Smart14:55 - The ascension of Derrick White17:30 - Locker room leadership22:05 - Joe Mazzulla30:35 - Jayson Tatum & Jaylen Brown41:40 - LeBron James turns 39On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill podcast, Vincent Goodwill is joined by Gary Washburn from The Boston Globe to discuss all things Boston Celtics.First, the guys discuss the very odd story of Aaron Gordon being out indefinitely after suffering cuts and lacerations as a result of a Christmas Day dog bite. The Celtics made a lot of big changes over the offseason, moving on from some longtime role players (Grant & Robert Williams, Marcus Smart, Malcom Brogdon) and moving Al Horford from the starting lineup to the bench while adding Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday. Gary tells us why the team makes more sense now, and why Marcus Smart needed to be traded to make room for Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.Derrick White has been playing at an all-star level this year, something that Gary says wouldn’t have been possible two years ago because of a lack of confidence. White making a solid two-way backcourt with Jrue Holiday has really freed up Tatum and Brown to do more, on and off the court.Speaking of, Gary explains that Tatum and Brown are very different people with very different interests and stresses that it’s okay if the two best players on this team aren’t best friends. It doesn’t mean they have an issue with each other and it definitely doesn’t mean they need to be split up.Vince and Gary agree that the Celtics occasionally fall in love with the 3-point shot to their detriment, and Gary explains how this has affected his relationship with Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla. Finally, with LeBron James’ 39th birthday coming up this weekend, the guys try to think of other players that have been this good at this age. What Ja Morant’s return means to Memphis and the Grizzlies | Devine Intervention

Chris Herrington from the Daily Memphian joins Dan Devine to talk about the red hot Memphis Grizzlies, who are 4-0 since the return of Ja Morant, and the bright future the franchise still has.00:00 - Count me in!05:15 - Memphis Grizzlies09:00 - Ja Morant’s return19:15 - Desmond Bane & Jaren Jackson Jr.30:00 - Marcus Smart32:50 - Vince Williams Jr.37:20 - When will Brandon Clarke return?41:50 - Fill in the Blank51:00 - The Closing Five56:45 - Weekly RecommendationsOn this episode of Devine Intervention, Dan Devine is joined by Chris Herrington of the Daily Memphian to talk about the Memphis Grizzlies, who are 4-0 since Ja Morant returned from a 25-game league suspension.Dan and Chris talk about what Ja means to the city of Memphis and where he ranks among past Grizzlies players, but they also dig into the stats to figure out why Morant has had such an outsized impact so quickly since his return. One thing that Memphis can take away from the 25 games Morant missed is the continued ascension of Desmond Band and Jaren Jackson Jr. Both of them continued to grow in his absence and now the team seems better prepared to eventually grow into a championship contender with three all-star level players in their lineup.Marcus Smart finally got back on the court against the Pelicans last night and fans were able to see what the front office envisioned when they traded for him as their Dillon Brooks replacement. His leadership, on and off the court, should hopefully help this young team avoid any more issues in the future. The guys also talk about the timeline for Brandon Clarke’s return from an Achilles injury and Vince Williams Jr. growing into another defensive stopper for a team that finds much of its identity on the defensive side of the ball.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports Podcasts

NBA Xmas Day: Luka goes off, Brunson beats the Bucks, the Nuggets’ perfect lineup & more | No Cap Room

Yahoo Sports fantasy analyst Dan Titus joins Jake Fischer on No Cap Room to recap all five NBA games that took place on Christmas Day.00:00 - Hello friends!05:40 - Jalen Brunson beats the Bucks15:50 - The Nuggets’ perfect lineup vs. the Warriors’ youth movement26:25 - Will the Lakers be forced to trade for LaVine?36:00 - Jaime Jaquez is impressing in Miami42:40 - Luka Doncic goes for 50 on the Suns, who seem lost52:50 - Fantasy basketball thoughtsOn this special episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports fantasy analyst Dan Titus joins Jake Fischer to recap all five games that happened on Christmas Day.Jalen Brunson continued to prove the doubters wrong by being the best player on the court against the Milwaukee Bucks, and he might be entering consideration as an All-Star starter this year. Meanwhile, the Bucks have to figure out how to fix their perimeter defense without Jrue Holiday. The Denver Nuggets’ have a perfect starting lineup, which makes it easier for Jamal Murray to step up when Nikola Jokic has an off game. The Golden State Warriors, meanwhile, are finally being forced to lean on their young players now that some of their legends are struggling with consistency. The Boston Celtics are clearly great and don’t really need to tinker at all. They didn’t struggle to put away LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the Lakers, who might be in the market for a scoring guard with Gabe Vincent getting surgery and D’Angelo Russell being moved to the bench. Is it all leading to a trade for Zach LaVine? The Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat played without Joel Embiid and Jimmy Butler, leading to a weird game that only really served to highlight how great rookie Jaime Jaquez has been. Jake and Dan use it to discuss who would be on the All-Rookie team if the season ended today.Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks carved up Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns. It got so bad that the microphones picked up Mavericks players asking why the Suns players weren’t giving more effort. The vibes are bad in Phoenix and there’s not a lot the team can do to improve the roster. It’s turning out a lot like the Brooklyn Nets’ failed experiment with Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden. Finally, before they get out, Jake and Dan talk about some fantasy basketball sleepers and some guys that you should be hanging onto if they’re on your bench.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports Podcasts

It’s an idea built on the holiday season and reconciliation and Jake thinks mistletoe should be involved. There are five marquee NBA matchups coming up on Christmas Day, so we had Dan Devine put each one into the category of “presents under the tree”, “stocking stuffer” or “lump of coal”. Each of these games has a lot of potential, but health might end up determining how good the basketball really is.Finally, Jake went to his 17th wedding of the year and came away with a fun story about meeting a listener of the podcast.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports Podcasts

Ja Morant shines in return, Zion disappoints & the Clippers are rolling | Good Word with Goodwill

Vincent Goodwill is in New Orleans for Ja Morant’s return from suspension, and he talks about how the night went perfectly for the Grizzlies’ guard but there is still work left to do.00:00 - Ja Morant returns from suspension12:00 - Zion Williamson16:30 - Ja Morant keeps receipts21:15 - Los Angeles ClippersOn this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill podcast, Vincent Goodwill talks about Ja Morant’s big performance in New Orleans on the night he returned from a 25-game suspension. There’s still work left to be done before anyone will trust that Ja has put his issues behind him for good, but the Memphis Grizzlies guard showed why he’s such a dynamic basketball talent against the Pelicans.Zion Williamson, who was battling an illness during the game, once again disappointed on a national TV broadcast and it might be time to wonder if he can find some more consistency when the games become more important.Back to Ja Morant for a moment, Producer John doesn’t love that Ja yelled “I keep receipts” while running back to the Grizzlies’ locker room after the game and the conversation riles up Vinnie, who thinks Ja is still pointing the blame in the wrong direction. Finally, Vince and John talk about an actual good basketball team: The Los Angeles Clippers. Since James Harden got in shape and acclimated himself to their system, the Clippers have turned into one of the best teams in the league. They’ve won 8 straight and load management seems to be a thing of the past for Kawhi Leonard and Paul George (at least while they angle for new contracts). Could Harden actually be the thing that keeps them healthy and fresh come playoff time?Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports Podcasts

Early NBA trade deadline buyers & sellers with Amin Elhassan | Good Word with Goodwill

Amin Elhassan joins Vincent Goodwill on the Good Word with Goodwill podcast to talk about some under the radar buyers and sellers heading into NBA trade season.00:00 - Welcome to the Good Word!02:05 - Bradley Beal injured (again)06:40 - Buyers: Miami Heat14:30 - Buyers: Sacramento Kings17:50 - Zion Williamson27:45 - Ja Morant returns34:40 - Time to trade Trae Young?46:00 - Sellers: Cleveland Cavaliers51:05 - Sellers: Golden State WarriorsOn this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill podcast, former Phoenix Suns front office member Amin Elhassan talks with Vincent Goodwill about some of the early buyers and sellers at the beginning of NBA trade season, but first they start by talking about Bradley Beal getting injured (again) and what that process is like mentally for a player. We kick off the buyers and sellers conversation with the defending Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat, who are shooting the lights out but could be looking to flip Kyle Lowry’s expiring contract for some more offensive help. The guys then move on to the Sacramento Kings, who have been tied to Zach LaVine in some recent trade rumors, but Amin doesn’t think the Kings should push in their chips and attempt to add a star this season. While attempting to talk about the New Orleans Pelicans as buyers, Vinnie and Amin end up talking about Zion Williamson’s weight and diet. He was recently ridiculed by Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley on TNT for not being in shape, and those are exactly the right people to be talking to Zion about the issue.Speaking of Zion, he came into the NBA in the same draft class as Ja Morant, who has had different issues with staying on the court. Amin talks about why it was so important for Zion and Ja to be superstar players in the NBA and why it’s sad that they seem to be throwing the opportunity away. The Atlanta Hawks are no better than they were a year ago, leading to speculation that they might be ready to tear it down and rebuild. The big question is whether it’s worth it to rebuild around Trae Young (again) or if it’s time to move on from a player that doesn’t play defense and isn’t well liked by other NBA players.Cleveland has gotten off to a really rocky start this season and could be looking to ship out Donovan Mitchell before he demands a contract extension. Vinnie talks about why he thinks the team should be handed over to Evan Mobley, and Amin explains why that’s so hard to do after a playoff run. Finally, this looks like the end of the Golden State Warriors dynasty. Vinnie argues that LeBron James’ career path has made us think differently about how dynasties end, and Amin has some advice for the team’s front office.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports Podcasts

The end of the Warriors dynasty, Giannis game ball drama & Wemby does it all | No Cap Room

Jake Fischer and Dan Devine get together to talk about Draymond Green’s indefinite suspension by the NBA, Giannis fighting with the Pacers over a game ball and the 1st place Minnesota Timberwolves.00:00 - Hello friends!01:35 - Draymond & the end of the Warriors dynasty20:45 - Wembanyama & the young Spurs36:30 - Giannis angry about the game ball50:15 - The 1st place Minnesota TimberwolvesOn this episode of No Cap Room, Jake Fischer and Dan Devine discuss Draymond Green’s indefinite suspension by the NBA and whether it is a sign of the end of the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty. Jake also talks about what the Warriors might be looking to do on the trade market.Jake is in San Antonio to watch the Spurs take on the Los Angeles Lakers (without LeBron James), and he has a lot of thoughts about what Gregg Popovich and the Spurs are doing as the team has lost 18 games in a row. The development of young players is the #1 priority in San Antonio, but are they getting too aimless and experimental?Giannis Antetokounmpo set a career high, and a Milwaukee Bucks franchise high, when he scored 64 points against the Indiana Pacers last night. But the big news story is how upset he was about not getting the game ball delivered to him after the win, which just adds more fuel to this budding rivalry that started in the NBA In-Season Tournament. Finally, the Minnesota Timberwolves are tied for the best record in the NBA (along with the Boston Celtics) and are finally seeing the potential that they hoped to achieve when they traded for Rudy Gobert before last season. Dan explains why this team is a real championship contender, and Jake talks about what the potential fallout could be if the T’Wolves can’t find success in the playoffs this year.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports Podcasts
