Megan Compain: NZ’s First Pro Basketball Player in the USA & All Blacks' New Commercial Manager
Megan Compain is the newly appointed All Blacks commercial manager, whose back story is as impressive as her new role. She was the first Kiwi to play professional basketball in the USA and the only one to play in the WNBA, had three pro seasons in Europe, and represented New Zealand for 10 years and at two Olympic Games. She also has an extensive 20-year career in the sports industry, including a long history with New Zealand Rugby - and is the partner and director of her own creative agency in Wellington. In this episode we talk about leaving Whanganui for the US as a 16-year-old, life as a professional basketballer, Partying with Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash and Mark Cuban, managing NZ Rugby’s commercial obligations, her parenting journey and relationship with Razor. Megan also addresses the enduring impact of the abuse of trust and grooming she suffered as a teenager at High School the US. It’s the first time Megan has opened up publicly on some of the most difficult parts of her journey, and we’re so grateful she shared her story – to help others who may be in a similar situation. This was such a cool chat, which effortlessly bounced from heartfelt to hilarious. Megan’s energy and outlook on life are contagious; we really loved this one. We're also super stoked to have Megan on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. Jesse Mulligan: “We’re the Last Generation of TV Presenters”, Positive Masculinity & More!
Jesse Mulligan is one of New Zealand’s best, and highest profile broadcasters – and a man that can do it all. He’s been a standup comic, TV producer, writer, PR man, food reviewer, radio announcer and he’s even a trained lawyer. But he’s best known for reaching huge audiences both on his afternoon show at Radio NZ, and his stints at Seven Sharp and the Project, where he fronted the show for seven years before it shut down in 2023. This interview was recorded two weeks before the shocking announcement that Newshub is set to close – and while we discussed the future of TV and the jobs in it, no one had any idea what was to come. Jesse was incredible company and such a thoughtful, interesting guest. We talked about his most interesting interviews, Matt and Jerry, his path through comedy and TV, the axing of the Project, what he’ll do next and much, much more. This was a really fun one, hope you enjoy. We're also super stoked to have Jesse on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. Grant Fox: Lessons From Fatherhood & Friendship with Sir Martin Crowe, Remembering First Rugby World Cup
On this episode of Between Two Beers we’re rewinding the clock back two years to when we sat down with Grant Fox. Grant is one of the best to have ever worn the All Blacks 10 jersey and is still regarded as one of the finest goal-kickers of all time. At the time of recording, Grant was in his final weeks as an All Blacks selector and in the process of pulling down the curtain on a 40-year career with New Zealand Rugby. We covered all the most insightful parts of his rugby career, his business, his relationship with Ryan and some of his best stories from travelling with his golf superstar son. He also talks about his 40-year friendship with the late Sir Martin Crowe and his important work with Big Buddies and the importance of being present with your kids. This was one of our favourite episodes and we’re really excited to share it with our new listeners. Grant broke the stereotype of stoic rugby man, with passages of real vulnerability and openness. If you didn’t catch it the first time around you’re in for a treat. Listen on iheart or wherever you get your podcasts from, or watch the video on Youtube. Dave Letele: Overcoming Poverty, Crime & Mental Health Issues - Becoming ‘Brown Buttabean’ & Founding BBM
Dave Letele is perhaps best known as a former professional boxer 'Brown Buttabean’, but his story is so much larger than that. It's been filled with highs and lows, from early sporting success to the failure of his supermarket business in Australia where he lost everything, including his family, and returned to New Zealand with only the clothes on his back, weighing in at over 200 kgs. He turned to prize fighting to earn money and get fit, lost over 100kgs and shared his journey on social media. The public response to his efforts built up the movement that became Buttabean Motivation or BBM. For the last decade, he’s worked tirelessly to create opportunities for people. He has set up free gyms in West and South Auckland, and Tokoroa, a community kitchen, a social supermarket in Tokoroa, and a Foodshare which regularly feeds thousands of people. In this episode we cover it all, in great detail – and it’s a blockbuster. He’s a man making a huge difference in Kiwi communities and we’re so thrilled to share his story. We’re also thrilled to announce Dave has joined us at B2B Speakers, our business that brings our guests to your events.
