Mark Stafford: 20 Years at the TAB, Surviving Tragic Car Crash, MS Diagnosis & Testicular Cancer
On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Mark Stafford. This ep is really special. There's just so much goodness in here. Staffy is a radio host, who is best known as the former face of the TAB, where he spent two decades as a bookmaker and broadcaster. But what's not so well-known is his roller-coaster ride through life with all its twists and turns. In this episode we talk about how he died in a car accident, before being brought back to life, beating cancer, getting diagnosed with MS and found his way to the TAB. He shares his best match-fixing stories, we talk about the legend of Steel Balls and all the most incredible yarns from being NZ's premier oddsmaker. We also talk about the devastating year of 2020, where he lost his job, his sister and his best friend in a short period of time. How he built himself back up, the friendships and lessons he leaned on and his reflections towards the end of this one - make it one of the greats. Staffy is such a lovely bloke, who's been through it all. He was incredibly candid and raw in this chat, and when you mix that up with being one of the best storytellers in NZ, made it one of our favs. We're also super stoked to have Staffy on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to www.b2bspeakers.co.nz. Lauren Rae: Fighting Terminal Cancer Diagnosis, Commonwealth Games Experience & More!
On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Lauren Rae. I don't say this lightly, but this is one of the most powerful eps we've done. Lauren is one of our Low Key Legends, who's currently in the fight of her life against melanoma. After going to the Commonwealth Games as a weightlifter, Lauren was given a terminal cancer diagnosis for a rare non-sun related melanoma which contained a gene called BRAF v600e. Despite having the melanoma surgically removed Lauren was told the cancer cells had spread to her lymph nodes, and that should she decide to join the clinical trial at Auckland Hospital, the doctors didn't think it would be of any use. Staring mortality in the face, Lauren questioned her diagnosis. She chose to fight, seeking second and third opinions that eventually opened the door to hope and led her family to going all in on Australia. Within a week of speaking to her Brisbane Oncologist, Lauren's family sold their car, took leave without pay and told their three and five year old, they were off on holiday. The powerful part is what happened next, Lauren's outlook and approach to life, the wisdom she's accrued and the spirit she's bringing to this fight. This is an ep you won't forget. Lauren is an exceptional storyteller and her journey is a real perspective shifter. Megan Compain: NZ’s First Pro Basketball Player in the USA & All Blacks' New Commercial Manager
Megan Compain is the newly appointed All Blacks commercial manager, whose back story is as impressive as her new role. She was the first Kiwi to play professional basketball in the USA and the only one to play in the WNBA, had three pro seasons in Europe, and represented New Zealand for 10 years and at two Olympic Games. She also has an extensive 20-year career in the sports industry, including a long history with New Zealand Rugby - and is the partner and director of her own creative agency in Wellington. In this episode we talk about leaving Whanganui for the US as a 16-year-old, life as a professional basketballer, Partying with Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash and Mark Cuban, managing NZ Rugby’s commercial obligations, her parenting journey and relationship with Razor. Megan also addresses the enduring impact of the abuse of trust and grooming she suffered as a teenager at High School the US. It’s the first time Megan has opened up publicly on some of the most difficult parts of her journey, and we’re so grateful she shared her story – to help others who may be in a similar situation. This was such a cool chat, which effortlessly bounced from heartfelt to hilarious. Megan’s energy and outlook on life are contagious; we really loved this one. We're also super stoked to have Megan on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. Jesse Mulligan: “We’re the Last Generation of TV Presenters”, Positive Masculinity & More!
Jesse Mulligan is one of New Zealand’s best, and highest profile broadcasters – and a man that can do it all. He’s been a standup comic, TV producer, writer, PR man, food reviewer, radio announcer and he’s even a trained lawyer. But he’s best known for reaching huge audiences both on his afternoon show at Radio NZ, and his stints at Seven Sharp and the Project, where he fronted the show for seven years before it shut down in 2023. This interview was recorded two weeks before the shocking announcement that Newshub is set to close – and while we discussed the future of TV and the jobs in it, no one had any idea what was to come. Jesse was incredible company and such a thoughtful, interesting guest. We talked about his most interesting interviews, Matt and Jerry, his path through comedy and TV, the axing of the Project, what he’ll do next and much, much more. This was a really fun one, hope you enjoy. We're also super stoked to have Jesse on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. Morgan Penn & Hayley Sproull - Sex.Life Season 2, Listener Q&A, Interviewing Jason Momoa
On this episode of Between Two Beers we welcome back Morgan Penn and Hayley Sproull from the podcast Sex.Life. A lot has happened since we last had them on the show – including Sex.Life becoming NZ’s top new podcast of 2023. In this episode we trace back over all the most interesting stories and themes from Season 1 – and take a glimpse at Season 2, we discuss the relationship between the duo – and how it’s evolved, we talk home play, Jason Momoa, what their DMs look like and how our listeners responded to our first episode with Morgan. And in the second half they help answer all our sex questions from both us and our guests. This was a really fun ep – filled with a ton of super valuable sex advice and laughs. It’s the foursome you never knew you needed. But it does include descriptions of sexual acts and desires, and is not suitable for listeners under the age of 18. Please take care of yourself, and ask for help if you need it. Listen on iheart or wherever you get your podcasts from, or watch the video on Youtube.
