How to Deal with Bruises and Swelling!
Have you copped a mean bruise while rolling? Got some weird swelling, lumps and bumps? BJJ is a true contact sport but it can hit you in the strangest places. Usually a bruise isn't enough to stop you from training but can leave you super sore- but some can be really serious. Bone bruises in particular can hang around for ages and can cause blood clots which definitely need medical attention. When is The Right time to Share in BJJ?
Do you share techniques with your team mates? Do you like to coach the lower ranks? A friend of the Podcast took the time to share with a lower belt but then was victim of the technique he shared and now got an injury as a result. Was it a bed idea to share?JT & Joey take very different approaches to helping team mates when it comes to sharing techniques. Some people need help and guidance but others will work it out on their own and really it falls on you to decide who needs your help and who is just fine solo. There is a famous saying " 1 more for the road..." which can sometimes result in the end of the road. Helping others is a rewarding part of the Jiu-Jitsu journey but communicating how powerful or dangerous techniques can be is really important so beginners don't become brutes. Is The Mat Enforcer A Hero Or Villain?
Does your Academy have a Mat Enforcer? Have you ever been enforced on visiting a new gym? The role of Mat Enforcer has an important part to play in the hierarchy of most BJJ schools- but is it necessary? Maybe its a really tough Brown Belt or a seasoned Purple Belt who is down to scrap! JT & Joey have seen many instances of the gym's champion stepping forward to battle any would be trouble makers or visitors that needed to be checked. Could better communication from your instructor with a visitor save the need for a team mate to have to beat up a disrespectful guest. Is a Mat Enforcer a Bully or a Bodyguard for the team? Is this an old School Jiu-Jitsu hangover? Every gym has it's competitors and tough higher belts that really represent the style of their school and sometimes visitors to a gym have come to test their skill. EP 300: Street Justice for a Gym Bro, Fastest Submission at WNO & Winning from Mount.
Adele Fornarino comes through on 2 weeks notice to snatch the fastest submission in Who's Number One History with an Aoki Lock. She is tied with Nicky Ryan with a 23 second victory over Amanda Alequin "Tubby BJJ." Joey has for the first time in his 13 year BJJ history started working on a specific game plan and training strategy.
