79. Progressive organizations launch Reject AIPAC to counter the pro-Israel lobby
AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, is on its way to spending over $100 million this election cycle as it looks to punish candidates critical of Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza. Earlier this year a coalition of nearly two dozen progressive groups – including Jewish Voice for Peace, IfNotNow, Justice Democrats, the Democratic Socialists of America, the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, and the Sunrise Movement – launched Reject AIPAC, an organization aimed at combatting the pro-Israel lobbying group. Mondoweiss’s U.S. correspondent Michael Arria interviewed Justice Democrats spokesperson Usamah Andrabi about the coalition, AIPAC's election strategy, and two of the biggest primary fights of the summer. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. Thanks! - - - - - Mondoweiss’s Gaza Correspondent, Tareq Hajjaj, recently published an article featuring witness testimonies of the deadly Israeli attack on the Nuseirat Refugee Camp in Gaza. Massive airstrikes hit the camp just as the Israeli military staged a raid on homes inside the camp where Israeli captives were being held. Four captives were recovered alive while over 270 Palestinians were killed and as many as a thousand were wounded. Resistance groups claimed that three other captives were killed by the Israeli military during the raid. Mondoweiss’s Managing Editor, Faris Giacaman, spoke to Tareq about his reporting. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 77. The Question of Hamas and the Left with Abdaljawad Omar
Mondoweiss’s Managing Editor, Faris Giacaman, speaks to Abdaljawad Omar about his article, “The Question of Hamas and the Left.” In it, Omar argues that Leftist critics in the West of Hamas fail to understand the complexity of Palestinian politics and resistance. He writes, “One cannot ground solidarity with Palestine on a politics that dismisses, overlooks, or excludes Hamas.” Abdaljawad Omar is a PhD student and part-time lecturer in the Philosophy and Cultural Studies Department at Birzeit University. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 76. ICC arrest warrants sought for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant
On May 20, the Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, filed arrest warrant applications for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and three senior Hamas leaders. Mondoweiss correspondent David Kattenburg called the charges against the Israeli leaders a "bombshell." Khan said the two men "bear criminal responsibility" for a host of war crimes and crimes against humanity including: starvation of Gazan civilians as a method of warfare, wilfully causing great suffering or serious injury in the besieged enclave, wilful killing or murder, intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population, extermination by starvation, and persecution and other “inhumane acts” committed from at least October 8. All of these crimes form part of a "widespread and systematic attack against the Palestinian civilian population pursuant to State policy." In this episode, Yumna Patel speaks with Hassan Ben Imran, a member of the Governing Council of Law for Palestine, about Palestinians' long effort to access international legal institutions and the impact of this development. Later, I speak to Spencer Ackerman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign policy columnist for The Nation, about how these indictments deepen the crisis of international order. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 75. Hundreds of Palestinian bodies recovered from mass graves in Gaza
Hundreds of dead bodies were found at the Nasser Hospital’s surroundings in Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Civil Defense said on Thursday. The Civil Defense announced in a press conference that since Wednesday alone, 392 bodies had been found in mass graves, many of whom had been identified as missing for weeks, while 58% of the bodies haven’t been identified. Muhammad al-Mughayyir, director of the Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza, said that some 20 bodies were buried while medical and medication tubes were still connected to their bodies, suggesting that they might have been buried alive. Al-Mughayyir added that the bodies showed signs of torture. Adam Horowitz, our Executive Editor, spoke to Muhammad Shehada, director of communications for Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, an organization with staff on the ground in Gaza documenting human rights violations. Muhammad describes the scene their staff is observing. Here’s that interview. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 74. Students protest Israel's genocidal war
Student protests over Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza are spreading across the United States and around the world. Students at Columbia University in New York setup a protest encampment last week on the New York campus. In response, the university’s President, Nemat “Minouche” Shafik, called in the New York Police Department and arrested several student organizers. These students were then banned from campus and may face expulsion. If the goal was to quickly end the protest, this completely backfired on the university administration. Thousands of students, joined by faculty and staff from across the university, re-established the protest camp almost immediately. Other universities around the United States have seen solidarity camps erected and administration buildings occupied. Now, students around the world are joining the movement. Michael Arria and I spoke to one of the student organizers from Columbia who was arrested and banned from campus. Maryam Iqbal spoke to us on Tuesday. In the second segment, Michael reacts to Summer Lee’s primary victory in Pennsylvania and previews his new election season newsletter. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 73. Eyewitness accounts from al-Shifa Hospital
When the Israeli military left the al-Shifa Hospital complex earlier this month, Gaza’s largest medical facility was left in ruins. International medical and aid groups declared it completely destroyed and totally non-operational. Shortly after, stories began to emerge of the horrors those inside the facility experienced at the hands of the Israeli military. Tareq Hajjaj, our Gaza Correspondent, collected eyewitness accounts of the deadly siege. He joined Yumna Patel, our Palestine News Director, to discuss the al-Shifa Hospital, as well as his reporting on what Palestinians are finding when they venture back to Gaza’s central and northern areas. Israeli forces killed several Palestinians trying to return to their homes over the past few days. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 71. How Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah has been changed by the Gaza genocide
Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah was among the last group of people to enter Gaza through Egypt on the morning of Monday, October 9, immediately before the Rafah crossing was shut down and the territory was sealed off from the world. He started operating at al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s medical epicenter, as soon as he’d arranged safe passage to the medical complex. Within the first few days, as a result of a relentless, ruthless bombing campaign against Gaza’s civilian infrastructure and people, the wounded had exceeded the entire Strip’s total bed capacity of 2,500. He told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on October 12, 2023, that basic medical equipment was unavailable mere days into the assault. He warned of the far-ranging, catastrophic consequences of this war against the people of Gaza, “a man-made catastrophe,” he said, “almost like a perfect storm,” as Gaza’s healthcare system was “already on its knees” thanks to fifteen years of Israeli siege. Abu-Sittah was working at Al-Ahli Hospital during the massacre on October 17, 2023, and was among the physicians who testified, surrounded by a sea of blanket-shrouded bodies, in the hospital courtyard in the attack’s immediate aftermath. Since leaving Gaza in November, Abu-Sittah has committed his days to fighting what he called the “killing machine masquerading as a state” set on extinguishing life in Gaza. Recently, he launched the Ghassan Abu-Sittah Children’s Fund to bring injured children from Gaza to Lebanon to receive holistic medical and psychosocial care. Mary Turfah, a writer and medical student, spoke to Dr. Abu Sittah on February 20. They talked about the liberatory potential of medicine and the complicity of Western media in the ongoing genocide in Gaza. They discussed Zionism and what to make of a settler colonial ideology that has flung itself over the precipice of genocide, necropolitics, and the obligation, when confronted with the cold, monstrous logic of elimination, to remain unwavering in our commitment to life. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 70. U.N. experts say “Israel has been intentionally starving” Gaza
In mid-December 2023, two and a half months into Israel’s war on Gaza, a UN-affiliated committee of famine experts reported that over half a million Gazans faced catastrophic hunger, all 2.3 million were in crisis, and the situation was “deteriorating rapidly.” On the eve of the Famine Review Committee’s follow-up assessment, forced starvation in Gaza is getting worse, fast. In a March 5 statement, seven UN experts declared that “Israel has been intentionally starving” Gaza and that “widespread famine” in the besieged, brutalized enclave is “imminent.” According to Gaza health officials and a “senior doctor,” cited on March 8 by the Associated Press, at least 20 people have died from dehydration and malnutrition at north Gaza’s Kamal Adwan and al-Shifa hospitals, and sixteen premature babies have succumbed to “malnutrition-related” disorders at Rafah’s Emirati Hospital. On March 10, Al Jazeera reported 25 “known starvation deaths” in northern Gaza. David Kattenburg spoke with the first author of the statement, Michael Fakhri, Special UN Rapporteur on the right to food. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics.
