In this episode, we deconstruct the story of Jepthah and his daughter. This is a bible story that was used to great effect during Sadie's fundamentalist upbringing as a tool to control people and as a tool to demand obedience. The details of the story, however, vary quite dramatically from the way Sadie remembers it being told when she was growing up. We have finally, after 3 years, tracked down the ORIGINAL "Brain In A Jar" story that appeared in both Episode 1 of our podcast, and Episode 57, our primer for new listeners. This story was our holy grail, and after 3 years we have tracked down a firsthand account of this story for confirming/debunking. It originated with a fundamentalist pastor named J. Frank Norris, who in many ways is the genesis of the IFB movement as it exists today. What's more, he had a bizarrely acute influence on Jack Hyles. He also may have been a murderer (???) What I won’t do in this episode, because I never ever do and never will, is discuss other eating disorder behavior beyond just saying extreme calorie restriction; I don’t ever discuss the methods that people use to achieve that kind of restriction because I’ve found that’s always damaging to me, so I feel there’s a high chance it’s damaging to other people too. If you need to skip *all* the fitness influencer, eating disorder stuff, you can jump back in after the break at 43 minutes, where we will be moving on to other scams and grifts and general BS that this person has been involved in. There are also much briefer mentions of police brutality, animal cruelty, and suicide in this episode.
