Connected Parenting
Jennifer Kolari
Connected Parenting shares techniques that therapists use to help parents soothe their child as well as enhance the parent-child bond and is based on the understanding that correcting and guiding behavior works best when it is preceded by and linked to empathy. At the heart of this parenting model is the CALM Technique which helps parents accurately attune to children’s affect and experience. These empathic interactions release reward chemicals in the brain that stimulate positive emotions and increase order and balance in the nervous system. Reward chemicals, including natural opiates, endorphins, and a powerful hormone called oxytocin, reduce and inhibit stress hormones and bathe the brain in positive emotions that ripple through every cell in the body. The benefits of empathy and compassion have a strong base in science that cannot be underestimated. Simply put, it is brain food, the emotional nutrition all of us need, perhaps our children most of all.
Although many parenting techniques stress the importance of empathy, Connected Parenting will show you how to use it skillfully to repair frayed bonds, deescalate tantrums, contain and correct difficult behaviors and help your child to become more confident and emotionally resilient. We use a collaborative and supportive coaching model and provide inspirational, easy-to-understand techniques grounded in neuroscience and attachment. In the end, your child will be more compliant, more relaxed, and – most importantly – happier. Connected Parenting will bring out the best in you and your child.

CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 97 – [REPLAY] – How to Parent a Master Procrastinator
It is unbelievably challenging to parent a master procrastinator. Your days are filled with worry, and an ever-growing pit in your stomach as you watch them play video games, or sit on their phone amidst looming homework due dates and projects that haven’t even been started yet. Often leading you to parent from a place of fear, where nagging, begging, pleading, threatening and the removal of their things is the only option you know to take.
This isn’t how you envisioned life when it came to raising your kids but you are at a loss for how to motivate them without such a harsh approach.
If you’re the parent of a teen or young adult who procrastinates, you know how heartbreaking [and let’s be honest at times – frustrating] it can be to see your child struggling to meet their potential. You may feel like you’ve tried everything to help them, but nothing seems to make a difference or inspire them to move forward.
In today’s episode Jennifer discusses what works and what doesn’t with a chronic procrastinator often seen in older teens and young adults but parents of younger kids should listen in as well to avoid future pitfalls.
If this is a familiar scene currently in your home there is hope. We have a new course option for you – “From No to Go” ….a course specifically designed to help your teen or young adult find their motivation.

CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 95 – Self-Heckling
Today's an interesting topic --------- I'm going to talk about self-heckling and the broken self esteem that comes as a result of it.
Self-heckling is that constant voice inside our head, that says things like...
"of course, you couldn't do that",
"someone else would do it better than you"
"you're a failure"
This leaves us or our children and us feeling less than, like we don't matter or that everyone is better than us so why bother trying. If this is an area that you or your child struggle with listen in as I talk about how to recognize that heckling voice, share ways to learn how to control it, and teach about what it is we need to put in its place once we stop it from heckling.

For most kids Halloween and the time leading up to it can be really fun and they love it. But for a lot of very sensitive children the feelings and reactions can be quite the opposite and extremely anxiety provoking. Everywhere they look they are seeing scary images on every lawn, and on every commercial on television, there's images of witches, ghouls and ghosts.
If this is something you are facing this Halloween season, then join me for this week's episode to talk about what we can do as parents to support our more sensitive kids and help them when it comes to managing their thoughts and feelings surrounding what leads up to and comes with the trick or treating holiday of October 31st.

CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 92 – Teens & Dating
The teen dating scene, has become extremely complicated both for them and us as parents. In fact by the time you listen to this, the scene may have even morphed and changed a little bit again.
Social media of course has played a huge part in really complicating things for sure because teens have been given the ability to talk to a number of different people all at the same time. The novelty of these situations and conversations send out reward chemicals like, oxytocin and serotonin into the brain leaving teens with this incredible feeling they want to run on all the time. Unfortunately, that feeling starts to wane and like anyone else they want that feeling again and so off they go to talk to someone else and the cycle repeats itself with varying levels of connection in each situation with another teen.
The whole constant, ongoing routine can get very complicated and confusing for everyone involved. This is why I wanted to have a conversation today about how we as a parent can guide our teenager through these rocky waters of relationship building and deeper connections with other teens so they come out on the other side healthier and happier with a better understanding of how relationships should work.

CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 91 – Socially Aggressive Kids
Childhood is a time where kids are trying to figure out how to be heard, how to make an impact, when to back off, and when to step forward. They do this by making a lot of mistakes, bumping up against things and learning sometimes the hard, experiential way, what does and doesn't work.
Today I want to talk about socially aggressive behavior and bullying, how to help your children if they are victims of this behaviour and also how to help your children manage their emotions if they are the aggressors.

CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 90 – Homework
Your kids have been at school all day and then they've probably had after school programs, so by the time they sit down to do their homework at night, they are fried, they are tired, and they don't want to do it.
The odd child already has their homework done and is bringing it to you to sign off on but that's very rare. Most kids procrastinate, drag their heels and refuse to do it. Some kids in fact, many kids would rather have a complete meltdown. They would rather scream, yell and get in to a big fight with you than sitting down and doing the 15 minutes of homework.
In today's episode we are talking all about homework and I am sharing a few things we have to be aware of if we want the daily process to run smoothly.

CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 89 – From Worrier To Warrior
Anxiety and worrying get a bad rap. We are taught to think of them as a bad thing and something we have to fight against. This is why it is vital that we help our kids understand the important role anxiety plays in our lives.
For instance if we didn't have anxiety, then we wouldn't look twice when we cross the street and that could end very badly for us.
The reality is a healthy amount of anxiety helps us make good choices and so it is our job to help our kids understand the importance of this concept and how we can work to manage the anxiety when it arises where it shouldn't.
Join me for today's tips and strategies on embracing our anxiety and together let's help our kids move from worrier to warrior.
