Reversing Aging, Quantifying Your Biological TruAge, & The Future of Healthspan Extension | Ryan Smith @ TruDiagnostic
Blood work and wearables are reactive and only sometimes show emergency trends.
How do you know whether "healthy" lifestyle practices work for you?
What if they're actually not compatible with your particular biochemistry, and worsening your health?
What if you had a test that could quantify the impact of your supplements, drugs, fitness, sleep, or habits on any outcome?
Say disease risk, IQ, healthspan, or athletic performance?
Well, it exists.
And this week we're diving deep into the science, applications, and buyer's guide to biological age testing.
Meet our guest
Ryan Smith attended Transylvania University and graduated with a degree in Biochemistry. After finishing all the educational curriculum and passing USMLE Step 1 he decided to leave and open up a pharmacy in the United States that focused on peptide synthesis and formulations for pharmaceutical preparations. That pharmacy, Tailor Made Compounding, became the 4th fastest growing company in healthcare in the US.
During that time Ryan invested in several businesses in the functional medicine space. Ryan exited Tailor Made in late 2020.
Since then, Ryan has opened many businesses including TruDiagnostic, a company focusing on methylation array-based diagnostics for life extension and preventive healthcare.
TruDiagnostic is a CLIA certified lab and health data company focused on serving integrative and functional medicine providers in the United States. TruDiagnostic has a commitment to research with over 30 approved clinical research studies investigating the epigenetic methylation changes of a variety of longevity and health interventions.
Since Tru Diagnostic's inception, they have created one of the largest private epigenetic health databases in the world with over 13,000 patients tested and continue to lead the space in epigenetic methylation interpretation and diagnostic prediction.

TruDiagnostic TruAge (use code URBAN to save and see my review https://outliyr.com/best-biological-age-tests#trudiagnostic-epigenetic-biological-age ): get the most accurate quantification of how your lifestyle is impacting your healthspan (I call it my "cellular report card")
Key takeaways
Epigenetic algorithms can be used to predict the effect of virtually anything (supplements, sleep, habits, exercise, etc), on any outcome (disease risk, human performance)
Unlike 23andMe and other DNA tests, epigenetics return actionable and useful results
When choosing a epigenetic age testing service, research the: sample type, scale of testing, # of CPGs measured, algorithm used, privacy of your data
Many of the most promising healthspan-increasing modalities are plasma related
1 dose of the peptide SS31 is the energy (ATP) equivalent of 6 months of endurance exercise

Almost-Forgotten Japanese Longevity Scrolls, Spermidine for Anti-Aging, & Sexual Health | Leslie Kenny
Spermidine may be the hottest anti-aging compound of the last decade, but is it possible that ancient Japanese longevity scrolls alluded to it over a century ago? What other wisdom did these scrolls contain? Thanks to our guest this week, these nearly-forgotten secrets live on.
Meet our guest
Oxford Healthspan was founded by Leslie Kenny, a Southern California entrepreneur and graduate of both Berkeley and Harvard, whose life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis in her 30s. When her doctors told her lupus had a life expectancy of five years and that RA could only be managed, not cured, she set out to optimize her health as best she could with safe, natural solutions.
She went back to school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in NYC, became a Bulletproof coach under health pioneer Dave Asprey, and took on health coaching clients worldwide. At the same time, she began helping life science academics at European universities, including Oxford, to raise money for their discoveries. She met a scientist who introduced her to a promising compound called spermidine.
The science was compelling – one scientist even called it "an anti-aging vitamin" in a published scientific journal – and it was safe. S
till, because it was natural, food-derived, and not a profitable drug, no one was interested in promoting it. Spermidine wasn't available in the US, so she decided to bring it to the US herself.
Today, at age 56, Leslie is living proof that we can get better with age, so long as we take responsibility for our health and meet our doctors halfway.

Key takeaways
The HR monitor is the single most important piece of equipment you can use as a biohacker or athlete

Health Starts With Your Oral Microbiome | Brian Maurer @ Bristle Health
The cleanest, pasture-raised, biodynamic, grass-fed, organic food won't do an unhealthy mouth much good. Even before digestion, with every bite, pathogens can enter the bloodstream through infected gums.
Increasing permeability of the blood-brain barrier and leading to neuroinflammation. Brushing and flossing are a good start. But our one or two annual trips to the dentist puts us in reactive mode. Holistic health is about prevention, so why should oral care be any different?
What my mouth needs will differ from yours. That's where Bristle can help.
Meet our guest
Brian Maurer started his career in genomics, at the DNA sequencing company Illumina.
There he was on the ground floor of the genomics revolution that is taking place in healthcare and beyond.
Brian got to work with some of the most cutting-edge scientists and companies innovating in areas like oncology, synthetic biology, CRISPR, and more.
He co-founded Bristle a year ago with the mission of leveraging genomics technology to fundamentally change how we understand and practice oral health.
Thank you to our partners

Bristle Health decodes your oral microbiome and personalizes recommendations so you can easily improve your health and proactively fix any issues before the dentist does (using toxic chemicals that cause more issues down the line)
Key takeaways
9/10 adults brush their teeth incorrectly
90% of Americans have one or more cavities, and 47% have some form of gum disease (which correlates strongly with systemic disease)
Diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and other forms of neurodegeneration are diseases of inflammation that often begin in the mouth
Saliva is a powerful anti-microbial defense that also helps speed up wound healing. It protects your mouth. Mouth breathing and waking up with a dry mouth, and medications with this as a side effect may be more dangerous than realized

Enjoy a Better Buzz, Break World Records, Achieve Mental Clarity, Biohack Sleep With Hard Ketones | Frank Llosa @ KetoneAid
It's 2022, and you've probably heard of keto/ketosis/ketones. But you don't need to follow any particular diet to experience the profound health and performance benefits of these drinks.
On the performance front, we have ketone esters. Used and researched by NASA, the US military, brain health experts, Tour de France cyclists, Olympians and professional athletes in most sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, UFC), and other high-achievers.
A new drink called Hard Ketones contains a different kind of ketone (R1,3 Butanediol) notable as an alcohol alternative for social confidence, relaxation, boosting mood, and crushing appetite.
Our conversation this week explores how anyone can use these ketone products for greater quality of life.
Meet our guest
Frank Llosa is a serial entrepreneur with successes across industries, including real estate, photography featured in National Geographic, and pre-dot com startups. After extensive research, 6 years ago Frank founded KetoneAid — the World's 1st Ketone Ester.
KetoneAid has supplied 80% of the Tour de France teams. Since starting, he's worked tirelessly to spread information, bust myths, and bring cutting-edge performance supplements to the masses.
He sets the bar for affordable quality. In late 2021, he launched Hard Ketones — The World's First Ketogenic and Ethanol-Free Alcohol. Redefining alcohol and shaping the future of the beverage industry.
