#### Formation of the Plasma Channel

The high temperatures generated by the current flowing through the plasma channel cause the air to rapidly expand, creating the sound we hear as thunder. Thunder is produced by the rapid heating of the air in the lightning channel, which leads to an increase in air pressure. The pressure produced from the stroke plasma, which is much greater than the pressure of the surrounding atmosphere, causes the channel to expand at supersonic speeds, ultimately producing a sound wave heard as thunder.
