I often share the story about the first time that Whitney took another lover. I didn’t know if I should punch someone in the face, cry or vomit...repeatedly.  A lot of people can’t quite comprehend why I would put myself in that situation, wouldn’t it be easier to be monogamous? Open relationships have never been about hedonism, they are about an ideal. They are about truth and freedom. Which are both synonyms of Love. There is no greater example of this ideal than in the utopian society envisioned in The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhhawk. Cyrano de Bergerac is not just a fictional character in a movie or a play.  Cyrano is an ideal, an archetype, and a teacher for how I want to live and how I want to die. He always has been, as much as any living example.  He is one who is uncompromising to his code of honor, who makes the right decision regardless of the personal cost, and though his concept of love may be flawed, it’s this fatal flaw that makes him all too human. The Prophet by Khalil Gibran is a book that I have been familiar with for years. When I first read it, I struggled to grasp the magnitude of its teachings. Some of the concepts of justice, in particular, didn’t quite resonate with my younger self. As I have re-read it, it has become one of those monumental texts that have really influenced how I view the world.
