TIHC Podcast
This Is Hardcore Podcast is inspired by the people and culture that make things possible. Interviews, stories and plenty of insight and inspiration in the do-ers, the makers and the people pushing the culture over the last 4 decades. There is an unbelievable amount of great DIY information being discussed and will be disseminated through these conversations, in hopes of instilling a hard work ethic in the new generations and a rekindling a connection to the old ways for the old school listeners.

Episode 46. Some Thoughts, Some Ramblin On and Talk of Shows
Returning.
I took some time to discuss the We're With Stu show, The Year of The Knife Record Release and talked about upcoming shows, Hardcore and how I feel about it now as the world opens back up.
Probably a little too much Ramblin, but at least its only an hour of it.

Episode 45 Shane Merrill. 20 plus years of Heists, Rumbles and Chicago Hardcore Shows.
Episode 45 Shane Merrill. 20 plus years of Heists, Rumbles and Chicago Hardcore Shows.
Shane Merrill is another long time friend whose work out of a small Knights of Columbus in a suburb just outside of Chicago inspired alot of what would come into play with This Is Hardcore . The Arlington Heist was one of the first "fests" we would attend annually, whether on the road with Dysphoria or with Punishment or Shattered Realm.
He has grown alot from Hall shows into holding down a calendar for Reggies, a 3 room venue in Chicago.
We talk on his early days, the bands he and his friends did as kids and what got him going into the world of promoting. With the announcement of the Killer Reunion, the band Shane plays in, and 2 reunion shows he booked in August, I wanted to have him on to talk about all of it. He's been a friend for over 20 years and his story is awesome.

Episode 44 Chris Wynne. From Photocopies to Hardcover Book, the Story of In Effect Zine.
www.thisishardcorefest.com/podcast/episode44
A long time ago, I picked up an issue of a fanzine in a store off of South Street. In Effect it was, featuring Sick Of It All and Sheer Terror on the cover, and the rest was history. Chris Wynne would start In Effect after working on New Breed #1 with Freddy Alva. Learning how to put a zine together, he would bang out 3 fine issues covering NYHC bands.
A hiatus where he was less involved in Hardcore and then a resurrection fueled by his friends in bands like Cold Front, Breakdown and a resurgence of NYHC bands, he would go from a few copies to his last issue printing over 10,000 copies.
Once the zine became too much work, he packed it in. He'd pop back up with In Effect Hardcore Zine dot com, and now for the first time, we can buy the In Effect Fanzine Anthology. We talk about his background and interests and the story of the zine and what went into making it.
In Effect Fanzine had a strong impact on me at a young age and my excitement for this book is overwhelming.

Episode 43. Bill Wilson. The Man Who Showed Us Where The Wild Things Are.
Episode 43. Bill Wilson. The Man Who Showed Us Where The Wild Things Are.
www.thisishardcorefest.com/podcast/episode43
This is a bucket list conversation for the podcast, or at least for me.
Being a fan of the bands that came from Blackout! Records and what Bill Wilson did for NYHC and beyond as a teenager, It was really something special to take 2.5 hrs and go through this life leading up to and beyond the New York Hardcore, Where the Wild Things Are compilation that was the first release of many for Bill and Blackout Records. What startled me was not specific details but the depth to which Bill reveals his childhood and later in life as he dealt with the struggle that it is to be in the Music Business in the early 2000s.
This is a must listen, as there is so much more than just talking about records and its another entrepreneur, meets the challenge of dark days and rises to unbelievable limits, all from the hard work that came from being involved in Hardcore Punk and running a record label in the most DIY ways.

Episode 42. Sunny Singh on How To Use Your Platform To Amplify The Voice Of Others
www.thisishardcorefest.com/podcast/episode42
40 Episodes ago, I spoke to Sunny on his background and the inspiration and motivation to create Hate5Six.com and the many facets of his media channel. 9 months later, I check back in on him, not only to see what he's been up to, but to discuss how he uses his platform to amplify the voice of others. There is a good bit of discourse on how he feels about running social media and the channel and how it works back into his politics and the way people engage him on social media. Later on we get into the depths of what he is working on, which the lionshare of his work of late has been being along Mike Africa Jr and the Move Movement in Philadelphia. We touch on the background of Move and we discuss what he has witnessed and his take on things that have transpired.

Episode 41 . Eddie Sutton. Surviving the Rise and Fall.
Episode 41 Eddie Sutton. Surviving The Rise and Fall
www.thisishardcorefest.com/podcast/episode41
The story of Eddie Sutton is not only the story of Leeway and their unparalleled impact and influence on hardcore and beyond, but also the tale of the trials and tribulations of many street kids in the world. Speaking to Eddie today, decades after his battle and victory over heroin addiction, he is now faced with a battle with cancer which he was lucky to be diagnosed early enough to catch the cancer and begin chemotherapy. His ability to look back with hindsight and humor into his dark past and the roots of our culture shows that regardless of the eventual demise of Leeway, that he still can look at those days with love and respect while being able to call out the problems that plagued the band.
We speak about alot of things not Leeway related and I truly believe this is one of my favorite episodes to date.

Episode 40 Carl Porcaro A Tale Told of Sick People..
Who doesn't want to hear the origins of one of the most influential guitarists in all of Hardcore? From his metalhead roots in Yonkers, to the way the band Breakdown formed and their glorious yet very short initial run.
This conversation is shorter than others, yet we plan to return with a part 2 and pick up where we left off and go further into Raw Deal and beyond.

Since the main conversation was about 1/2 the length of the last couple episodes, I've added a short conversation to talk to an old friend Davin Bernard about her Hardcore Radio Show called Marked For Life. She talks briefly on her background and influences that drove her to create one of the coolest innovations of the Covid Times.
We will certainly have Davin as an upcoming guest in the weeks to come.

Episode 39 Mike Gitter... What Makes A Man Start Fires?
Episode 39 Mike Gitter... What Makes A Man Start Fires?
www.thisishardcorefest.com/podcast/episode39
Mike Gitter started in the second generation of Hardcore Punks, in a small town in Massachusetts, that would place him perfectly in the right place to find hardcore punk, and meet so many people who would be integral for his life and career moving forward, all before he was out of high school. Starting with his XXX Fanzine in 1983, it would be the beginning of his life long passion meets career. From writing a fanzine, working with a small label, to eventually writing in other magazines like Thrasher Mike Gitter would just get deeper immersed in the behind the scenes of hardcore punk. From being in bands, booking shows and tour managing, all of this would lead to his first shot position as an A&R and would go on to be a force in releasing some great records, including Civ Set Your Goals, which we spoke about a bit.
Our conversation ends around the mid to late 90s when he shifted over to A&R of Roadrunner records, but 3 hours in, we cut it and decided to have some more time in another episode finishing up his story.
From fanzine writer in 1983 to being responsible for signing Body Count who recently won the Grammy for Best Metal Record, this is a story of a DIY born professional career in music, keeping the spirit of the underground alive at the highest levels of success in the music industry.

Episode 37 Paul Conroy. Fighting The Good Fight.
Episode 37 Paul Conroy. Fighting The Good Fight.
www.thisishardcorefest.com/podcast/episode37
Paul Conroy's story of rising up the ranks from the very bottom of the ladder in the Philadelphia area metal scene to becoming one of American Metal / Hardcore and Metalcore's biggest champions is absolutely a must listen.
There is so much to learn from his experiences, his tips on how he networked and took risks and how sometimes they didn't pay off but the experience was worth it. There is so much to him, from a local band manager to becoming an A&R for Roadrunner to creating Good Fight Entertainment, the Sounds of The Underground tour and managing so many well known bands like Terror, Unearth, Madball and countless metal bands. There is so much more to his achievements as he reached into the world of Sports and Skateboarding.
I'm leaving alot out so you have to listen. Paul is not only an entrepreneur and a DIY, self motivated success story, he is also a great teacher of the road ahead of anyone looking to traverse the many facets of the behind the scenes world of the music industry.
