Interview with Small Isles
We had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Fairchild and Jacob Snider of Small Isles over Zoom video! The new instrumental project of guitarist Jim Fairchild (Grandaddy / Modest Mouse / All Smiles) and songwriter/composer Jacob Snider (named Best New Artist by NPR-affiliate WXPN-Philadelphia), Small Isles inhabits a rare hypnotic twilight between motion picture music and incandescent cosmic folk. At once a love letter to film soundtracks and a meditative balm for our troubled times, 'The Valley, The Mountains, The Sea' was recorded by Fairchild on a bare-bones mobile rig while on tour with Modest Mouse, in the cracks of time between soundchecks and performances, from city to city, in darkened hotel rooms and over-lit backstage dressing rooms, giving the album a sense of intimacy, of stolen time and weary after-show solitude. Playfully conceived as an imaginary score to an imaginary film in the spirit of the 90s sleeper classic 'The Ice Storm', the album is cinematic in a homespun way, at times recalling the innovative film music of Hildur Gudnadottir and Oneohtrix Point Never telescoped through a back porch Sigur Ros or the delicate cobwebs of barely-there slowcore Americana. A linchpin track off the album, 'Life At One' is imprinted by Snider's chorale-like humming and an emotionally riveting video by animator Riley Thompson. In the words of Fairchild, "It's one of the first songs that we worked on together and became the spiritual center for the album. I wrote the central musical themes and once Jacob's voice entered the picture, providing the autumnal glow, the song became what it was supposed to, and pointed the way to so much more music." About the beautifully evocative video, Fairchild had this to say, "I had this vague concept of a person facing down their mortality and then finding redemption and purpose. Where Riley took the song was beyond what I'd hoped for. It is heartbreaking in the best possible way, without becoming didactic. He is also making a chopped and screwed version of the video which will serve as a chaptered visual accompaniment for the whole album. Riley's work brought the whole album to life in a way I'd hoped for but couldn't have imagined." Small Isles will be playing select shows later in 2021. We want to hear from you! Interview with Susan Hickman
We had the pleasure of interviewing Susan Hickman over Zoom video! Determination and passion paint the walls of country artist Susan Hickman's life, causing fans to recognize these vibrant traits undeniably inspire the way she crafts her music. While these are characteristics most acquire as they mature, they seem to be inherent in Hickman's ethereal essence. At only the age of five she began playing piano and added violin lessons as well a few short years later. As if two instruments wasn't enough for a young Hickman to handle, at the age of twenty-one, she began teaching herself to play guitar in the living room of her family home in Atascocita, Texas. Hickman finds a unique way to connect her own voice with the instruments she surrounds herself with and has the ability to create melodies which are very much "Louder Than Words". At only 12 with no previous experience other than playing and singing in church, Hickman scoured the Yellow Pages for every talent agency in the Houston area and then went on to travel across the country to pursue her dreams. Upon recollecting her journey the first few years Hickman is quick to refer to her mother as a saint from the long business trips to sitting at her shows in the honky-tonks during the early hours of the morning. In 2010, Susan was named CMA Close Up Who New To Watch In 2010 and has mastered the art of live performances. Hickman's energy, can-do attitude, and not to mention her music has allowed her to captivate audiences with various large scale acts such as Miranda Lambert, Jo Dee Messina, Shenandoah, Dean Dillon, Robert Earl Keen & Daryle Singletary. While 2010 was a pivotal year for Hickman it also proved to be a difficult one as well, she relied heavily upon her determination and positive attitude. Because she was playing guitar and singing nearly 10 hours a day between rehearsals and shows, Hickman was left having to get two surgeries. But if you've learned one thing about this performance powerhouse, it's that nothing will stop her mind from taking her where she needs to go, not even her own body. Her injuries did not stop her from developing quite a following in the U.S. and Europe. Susan has played through her pain and entertained audiences at Nashville's renowned CMA Music Festival and even at France's 23rd Annual Country Rendez-Vous Festival. Not to mention winning Texas CMA Female Vocalist of The Year 2015. As Hickman reflects on her gypsy lifestyle she shares she has done a lot of soul searching. She has taken time to discover herself as a person and then as an artist, though she cleverly mentions they often fight with one another. Only in her thirties, Hickman seems wise beyond her years and has a bright career ahead of her. She is a strong role model for women everywhere, showing them anything is possible when you live out your story with a strong will and a big heart. We want to hear from you! The 20-year-old artist captured national attention in 2018 as one of the standout stars of ABC's American Idol, kicking off the season with a stunning audition performance of her own extraordinary composition, "21st Century Machine," immediately winning over judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry, who applauded her a "genius songwriter." 2019 brought her remarkable solo debut EP, THE SAD VEGAN, highlighted by the moving pop anthem "Prom Queen." The track, which exploded across all platforms, was named one of TIME's "5 Songs You Need To Listen To This Week," and landed Catie a spot on Idolator's "On The Verge: 40 Artists To Watch In 2020." Heartbroken and Milking It follows a string of increasingly well received releases including last year's "One Day." The track arrived alongside an exclusive premiere and interview with Turner on Philadelphia's WPVI-TV/6ABC and was quickly met with applause from such national outlets as American Songwriter, which wrote, "'One Day' is an elegant, clear example of how Turner's down-to-earth feelings and every day experiences haven't gotten lost in favor of topics or sounds that are more aggressive, trendy, or edgy, solely to surprise the millions now listening and watching." Catie – who made a surprise return to American Idol earlier this year (watch it HERE) – also recently launched Friends Without Benefits, a new podcast covering the latest in entertainment, celebrity news, and what it's like living in a dysfunctional household with her co-hosts Ryan Temple and Elizabeth Lerch. Interview with Old Sea Brigade
We had the pleasure of interviewing Old Sea Brigade over Zoom video! Life happens between all of the changes around us. We adapt to the ebbs and flows in our environment and ultimately grow in the middle of major milestones. Old Sea Brigade documents the space between those changes in his songs. Atlanta-born and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Cramer captures anxiety, nostalgia, confusion, love, loss, and, ultimately, hope in tender true-life snapshots colored by folk eloquence, Americana bliss, rock energy, and country heart. He welcomes everyone to flip through those snapshots on his 2021 second full-length offering, Motivational Speaking [Nettwerk] Like any timeless scrapbook, the album evolved as a living and breathing entity over the course of the past two years. Before that, Ben initially debuted Old Sea Brigade in 2015 with his self-titled independent debut EP. It yielded "Love Brought Weight," which gathered over 41 million Spotify streams and counting. After the Cover My Own EP and Songs for the Holidays EP, he unveiled his 2019 full-length debut, Ode To A Friend. He garnered praise from Boston Globe, UPROXX, Glide, and No Depression and hit the road with Julian Baker, Joseph, Lewis Watson, and Luke Sital-Singh. He developed undeniable chemistry with Luke that carried over to the studio as they teamed up on the collaborative All the Ways You Sing in the Dark EP. With both musicians off the road due to the Global Pandemic, they chose to unveil the project in 2020, and it generated nearly 3 million streams in the span of a few months. In addition to acclaim from American Songwriter, Atwood Magazine claimed, "Old Sea Brigade and Luke Sital-Singh have struck gold on their soulfully soothing new EP." Simultaneously, Ben had been working diligently on Motivational Speaking with his longtime production partner Owen Lewis [Banners, Maddie Medley] as well as various collaborators such as bassist Eli Beaird [James Bay, Shawn Mendes], drummers Will Sayles [Norah Jones, Drew Holcomb] and Julian Dorio [Eagles of Death Metal, The Whigs], guitarist Kris Donegan [Third Eye Blind, Kelsea Ballerini] and Glenn Duncan [Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Mark Knopfler] on dobro, banjo, and bouzouki. As the world shutdown, Ben took advantage of the downtime to perfect these twelve tracks. He initially teased the album earlier this year with "Caroline," where delicate strumming and strings conjure a gorgeous daydream. He'll kick off 2021 with the single "Day By Day." A kinetically steady beat from Julian Dorio [Eagles of Death Metal, The Whigs] courses underneath a nimble riff as his full-bodied delivery gallops towards a floating hook, "I think of you growing old and it breaks my heart." Conceived as his first composition during the COVID-19 quarantine, "American Impressions" conjures up a "fantasy of living the 'California Dream' with someone" over sunny acoustic strumming and ethereal overtones. Co-written with Sital-Sing over ZOOM, "Mirror Moon" offsets lush electric guitar with a chantable refrain. Lyrically, it's a reminder to myself, 'Don't get too comfortable'. On the record, I speak on building roots. Some of these roots are tied to relationships, some are tied to places you live. 'Mirror Moon' explores building roots and the effect change has on them. Metaphorically speaking, you look at the moon and expect it to be there. It's the same as when you're in a relationship and have people you can count on. What happens when that splits in two?" Strains of mellotron swell through "Salt," which maintains the distinction of being "the first Old Sea Brigade song to feature banjo." Meanwhile, "How It Works" relays the story of a snarky industry encounter with a gleeful grin. In the end, Motivational Speaking collates the kind of memories and feelings we all could use a little more of right now. We want to hear from you! Interview with BabyJake
We had the pleasure of interviewing BabyJake over Zoom video! Bound to be a staple on your summer playlists, alternative singer, songwriter, and producer BabyJakedrops his latest single "Daddy's Coming Home". On "Daddy's Coming Home," BabyJake goes full-on outlaw rockstar. His wild delivery rings out with grit and gusto on the guitar-laden banger. In the accompanying music video, BabyJakerescues a damsel-in-distress (from an airstream) and concocts a revenge plot against her father. The outright rowdy visual sets the tone for the forthcoming debut album from the Gold-Certifiedrising star. Of the song, BabyJake says, "I wrote & produced ['Daddy's Coming Home'] with Danny Shyman, who I did most of this album with. I've been listening to a lot of classic rock and just really wanted to make a rock & roll record. I started on the guitar and the lyric 'Daddy's coming home...' and we just built from there. It's by far my favorite record I've released so far, and I think a good example of where I'm headed as an artist." Earlier this spring, BabyJake released his singles"Do I Fit In Your Shoes?" and "Funny Thing About Love" with BipolarSunshine, which were praised by Billboard, V Magazine, TMRW Magazine, American Songwriter, and more. The singles followed his 2020 debut EP Don't give me problems, give me wine hailed by critics and fans alike. The seven-song genre-blurring EPfeatureshis single "Head In The Clouds" and was acclaimed by Notion, The Line Of Best Fit, Ones To Watch, This Song Is Sick, Lyrical Lemonade, and more. Wonderland stated, "Few artists are able to bounce so seamlessly from genre to genre than BabyJake," while Flauntproclaimed, "BabyJake is on his way to superstardom."Earlier this year, BabyJake teamed up with Louis The Child on "Somewhere Else." Stay tuned for more music and news to come from BabyJake this summer! ABOUT BABYJAKE Jake Herring, aka BabyJake, first picked up the guitar when he was eight years old. Growing up in Fort Myers FL, he constantly juggled his deep love of classic rock and guitars with an enthusiasm for sports and partying with his friends. For solace, Herring often turned to his dad's folk records, favoring the low-key contemplative sounds that resonated with the sense of alienation that he was feeling. Though he maybe wasn't conscious of it at the time, Herring was priming himself to be a sort of musical chameleon. Well versed in the building blocks of rock music, the intimacy of folk, and with an innate understanding of the rap and pop music he grew up around, he was constructing a well of disparate influences to draw from when he eventually made a serious go at a music career. After his freshman year of college, Herring dropped out and started writing songs as often as he could. Debuting as BabyJake in 2019, his Gold-Certified single "Cigarettes on Patios" topped global viral charts and has accumulated over 100 million streams to date. Despite the global pandemic changing original plans for 2020, BabyJake kept the momentum going with a seven-song debut EP, Don't give me problems, give me wine, which Lyrical Lemonade acclaimed, "an exceptional project." On the heels of its success, BabyJake sets the stage for his debut album with his latest singles "Do I Fit In Your Shoes?" and "Funny Thing About Love". We want to hear from you!
