Interview with Natalie Shay
We had the pleasure of interviewing Natalie Shay over Zoom video! Natalie Shay is an indie-pop artist hailing from North London. The multi-award-winning musician has established an ever-growing presence and loyal fanbase through her explosive live performances and unforgettable anthems, recognising her as one of the UK's hottest emerging talents. Her relatable lyrics touch on love, self-discovery and the everyday experiences of a twenty-something. Combining her youthful and charismatic aura with her classical training and time spent at the prestigious BRIT School, Shay has finessed the ability to produce undeniably catchy music, whilst maintaining a musical maturity. Compared to the likes of Haim, Little Comets and Fickle Friends, the Londoner has absorbed a similar energy and dynamic within her new music, resulting in a sound which oozes with passion and allure. Her latest single "Medicine Boy" plays on the theme of comparing a dysfunctional relationship with a boy to a drug. Shay explains, "The lyrics are written so that if I told you the whole song was about an addictive relationship, it would make sense. But if I also told you the whole song was about recreational drug use, every line would still make sense." Capturing the essence of a bittersweet relationship, Shay plays with the idea that just because a relationship isn't "good," it doesn't necessarily mean it's totally unhealthy. She confides, "I was very stuck in my own head and emotions at the time of writing, it was an uncertain time and I'd been doing a lot of thinking and growing up." Shimmering synths, colourful, animated melodies and Shay's powerful, crystal clear vocals deliver the perfect, feel-good summer anthem, with her instantly recognisable sound shining through in the fresh and fun production. Occasional shadows of darker moments, melancholy lyrics and multi-tonal elements represent the back and forth of fighting for something that you know is perhaps a little toxic. Entering into a new wave of her sound, Shay admits how she now has a better understanding of her own feelings and emotions, allowing listeners to closely follow her journey through her early twenties, blossoming into a more mature and reflective individual. Shay continues to pique the interest of audiences across the globe. Garnering attention from notable publications such as Billboard, Clash and The Line of Best Fit, to name a few, as well as landing Spotify's New Music Friday playlist in nine countries, Shay has collectively amassed hundreds of thousands of streams. She has also worked on EDM tracks with the likes of Grum and Kryder, racking up over 2 millions streams to date. In 2018 she was asked to be part of the jury for the UK Eurovision competition. Continuing to forge ahead, Natalie Shay is quite simply a force to be reckoned with. We want to hear from you! Interview with A Great Big World
We had the pleasure of interviewing A Great Big World over Zoom video! GRAMMY-award winning multiplatinum duo A Great Big World just released their third studio album, Particles. The new album features 10 tracks, including their latest single "Glowing" which they recently performed on LIVE with Kelly and Ryan – watch the full performance HERE. Also featured is their stunning collaboration with Christina Aguilera, "Fall On Me." Each song on Particles was written from an incredibly honest place, as the duo explored finding wonder and meaning in significant and small moments alike. The entire experience was a cathartic and therapeutic process for the guys, and their hope is that by being vulnerable, others can connect with them and feel a little less alone in the universe, especially following 2020. The album artwork was meticulously designed by contemporary artist Kysa Johnson to bring the duo's vision to life. The guys wanted to explore the infinitely small with the infinitely large (think: A Great Big World vs. particles) as they believe the entire universe and all of its mystery exist in every particle. Kysa's art is exactly that. By painting tiny subatomic particle decay patterns, she is able to illustrate enormous cosmic images. We want to hear from you! Interview with Dennis Lloyd
We had the pleasure of interviewing Dennis Lloyd over Zoom video! Multi-Platinum International Artist Dennis Lloyd recently dropped his debut Full-Length Album 'Some Days,' via Arista Records / Sony Music Entertainment Following the overnight success of his smash single "Nevermind" and a tumultuous two-year period marked by litigation, exhaustion, and a self-prescribed break from the road, the multi-platinum international artist Dennis Lloyd is returning in full-form, reflecting on the highs and lows of his roller coaster journey with his debut full-length album, 'Some Days,' out now via Arista Records / Sony Music Entertainment. The release of 'Some Days' follows the single, "The Way," Dennis' dynamic new single that marries a driving beat with a reflective message about balancing success and simplicity. Produced by Kygo and Dennis, the song was written in a posh Las Vegas studio, but finished while exploring the wilderness in the Columbia jungle, a surreal contrast that perfectly illustrates the disorientating experience of Dennis' last few years and that served as inspiration for the rest of the album. A consummate rebel in the vein of iconoclasts like The Weeknd, Lloyd grew up in Tel Aviv enamored by the sound of the trumpet – its dominance, strength, power, and beauty. Inspired by artists like Audioslave and Linkin Park, he was encouraged by his teacher to attend the music school Thelma Yellin, where he reached a new level of artistry and creativity, and at 22-years-old he traveled to a remote corner of Thailand to find his musical voice—a swelteringly hybrid of pop, hip-hop, and rock. He fell into a relationship that didn't last, but it formed the inspiration for his breakout single, "Nevermind," a smoldering proclamation of commitment and desire guided by a finger-snapping beat and mellow guitar strums. The song sparked a rush of worldwide passion, rising on European and American radio charts. But the traps of the music industry became stifling for Lloyd, and after a whirlwind tour of the world that included stops at Coachella, Governor's Ball, and Firefly Festival and saw his catalogue surpass one billion streams, he took a much-needed break from the road to rediscover himself and his goals as an artist. Now, with his husky voice and innovative style that "creatively blends the elements of pop, R&B, rock and reggae, breaking global boundaries in addition to crossing them" (Forbes), Dennis returns for his debut album having perfected a post-genre sound that's both brutally honest and infectiously laidback. Dennis anchors his tracks with looping hooks and heady beats, letting his passions and frustrations show through with soulful cries, melancholy chords, and unvarnished lyrics. He's an innovative arranger and producer with a gift for exploring texture and atmosphere—and even at his lowest moments, he can lift the mood with a jazzy trumpet solo. Throughout 'Some Days,' Dennis recounts his life changing so dramatically following his newfound success. The aching croons, looping grooves, and jazzy trumpet emphasize feelings of raw yearning, while his lyrics show a balladeer torn between breaking away from his love or doubling down at all costs. Interview with Kabir Sehgal
We had the pleasure of interviewing Kabir Sehgal over Zoom video! Multi-GRAMMY Award (6x) and Latin GRAMMY Award-winning (5x) producer/artist Kabir Sehgal collaborates with leading BIPOC and women artists on his latest EP, Threshold, set for release on Tiger Turn (eOne) on Friday, August 27, 2021. An Indian American producer with more than 70 album credits to his name, Kabir Sehgal releases four singles leading up to Threshold with each showcasing the complexities of finding love and discovering one's individual identity. Threshold features pop sensation Sonna Rele (vocalist on "Strong" in Disney's motion picture, Cinderella) on the first single, "Somewhere Between 5th and Madison" (Release Date: May 14, 2021). Alyssa Raghu -- a Top 8 contestant on ABC's American Idol (2018, 2019) and who Katy Perrytouted about, "She's got that sauce!" -- teams up with U.S. immigrant and DACA recipient Caliph on "Wasted Pages" (Release Date: June 4, 2021). Sehgal remixes Emilio Solla's "Llegara, Llegara, Llegara" from the Latin GRAMMY-winning album Puertos ("Best Latin Jazz Album," 2020) with special guest vocalists Manu Manzo and Danay Suarez (Release Date: July 9, 2021). Threshold closes with a Pop/EDM track "What's Your Name?" highlighting GRAMMY Award-nominated singer Thana Alexa (Release Date: August 27, 2021). As one of today's leading producers, Sehgal's award-winning recording catalog reflects a career spotlighting political and social issues voiced through the mediums of big band jazz and working with soul/R&B stars such as Jon Batiste (featured on Sehgal's 2020 production, Swing States: Harmony in the Battleground). He has also made four albums as an artist with meditation pioneer Deepak Chopra, including Spiritual Warrior. Threshold takes Sehgal into the pop music realm with the same premise as his latest recordings: to project personal stories that must be heard by the masses. Sehgal is renowned for traveling to the U.S.-Mexico border with Arturo O'Farrill to film the feature documentary and 2-CD recording, Fandango at the Wall (HBO). His production American Dreamers with the John Daversa Big Band and DACA artists won three GRAMMY's (the 2nd most at the 61st GRAMMY's). Sehgal also produced Presidential Suite: Eight Variations on Freedom by Ted Nash along with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Threshold marks Sehgal's foray into Pop/EDM production featuring brilliant BIPOC vocalists each offering divergent perspectives on love's many languages. London-born Sonna Rele sings of a magical kiss and sleepless nights in the Big Apple on "Somewhere Between 5th and Madison." Emotive vocals meet multi-synth arrangements for a DJ-ready track for NYC's bars and clubs. Rele got signed by Ne-Yo to his Motown Records and has worked with John Legend, Maxi Priest, Wyclef Jean, and Michael Franti. Rele brings her A-game to "Somewhere Between 5th and Madison," a song by acclaimed songwriter Greer Baxter that is about the highs and lows of love in Manhattan. Baxter wrote the first, second, and fourth songs of the EP, and co-wrote the third one, and she's known for her "Line in the Sand" which Mandy Gonzalez of Hamilton performed on the album, Fandango at the Wall. While in the studio producing Threshold, Sehgal has presented more than 100 concerts in 77 days with his nightly "Quarantine Series" that's garnered more than 4 million views on Facebook. Interview with Straylight Run
We had the pleasure of interviewing John Nolan of Straylight Run over Zoom video! Craft Recordings is thrilled to announce Straylight Run's Live at the Patchogue Theatre — the band's only live album, captured at the height of their success in 2005…and then shelved for 15 years. While a handful of tracks from the performance were shared in 2020 as a Bandcamp exclusive, the forthcoming release will now include the full 16-song set and will be available for fans to enjoy on CD, vinyl, and across all digital platforms. A special edition of the 2-LP set —pressed on red marble vinyl and limited to 500 units — will also be sold exclusively on the band's webstore. All formats can be pre-ordered today, while the advance single "Existentialism on Prom Night (Live At The Patchogue Theatre, Long Island, NY/2005)" is available to stream or download now. Originally formed in 2003 by Taking Back Sunday's John Nolan (vocals, piano, guitar) and Shaun Cooper (bass), Straylight Run marked a sonic departure for the artists, who opted for reflective, indie rock songs over the heavier material that they were known for. Nolan and Cooper were soon joined by drummer Will Noon (formerly of Breaking Pangaea) and singer, guitarist, and pianist Michelle DaRosa. Straylight Run released their self-titled debut in 2004 through Victory Records, earning critical acclaim and a Top 5 spot on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. A year later, they followed with their EP, Prepare to Be Wrong. During this time, the band stayed busy on the road, supporting acts like Coheed and Cambria, The Used, and Motion City Soundtrack, as well as headlining the Vans Warped Tour. In 2005, the band booked a hometown concert at Long Island's Patchogue Theatre to raise funds for a friend in need. Aiming to release a live DVD, they filmed and recorded the show. In a statement, Nolan recalled that "the feeling in the room and on stage that night was incredible… Unfortunately, the [video] footage ended up being unusable, so plans for the DVD were scrapped. The audio from the show sounded great, but at the time we were getting ready to release our first EP, so putting out a live album at the same time didn't make sense." He continued, "We didn't know what to do with the recording, so it stayed on the shelf with the idea in the back of our minds that we'd release it someday." In April 2020, the band shared ten of those songs on Bandcamp — donating 100% of proceeds to Feeding America — and reunited for a one-off livestream performance. Now, with the full release of Live at the Patchogue Theatre, fans can enjoy the only live recordings of songs from Straylight Run and Prepare to Be Wrong, including such favorites as "Existentialism on Prom Night," "The Tension and the Terror," and "Hands in the Sky (Big Shot)." After that evening, Straylight Run went on to release one more album (2007's The Needles the Space) as well as three more EPs before announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2010. That same year, Nolan and Cooper resumed their work with Taking Back Sunday. Today, they continue to record and tour with the best-selling alt-rock band. DaRosa, meanwhile, went on to form the band Destry with Cooper, along with members of The Format and Cassino. Will Noon played drums with the best-selling group, fun., and is currently one half of the Los Angeles-based duo Mourners. Click here to pre-order/pre-save Live at The Patchogue Theatre. Interview with Assertion
We had the pleasure of interviewing Assertion over Zoom video! Off the song "Deeper In The Shallow," guitarist/vocalist Justin Tamminga says, "(the song) was written roughly 14 or 15 years ago. (It's) sort of a letter to my sister, who had just moved to the town I was living in and was starting to hang out with people in the "scene." We grew up in an abusive household and a lot of these people's actions mirrored those of my mom and stepdad. When you grow up in a traumatic environment, it tends to hinder your ability to see abusive behavior because you're used to being treated poorly and not having your boundaries respected. This is also why we came up with the band name Assertion. So the song is a mixture of our background mixed with the current time and place we were living. I went on to play this song in a band called Hands Of Toil, until William heard it and wanted to play it. William, Bryan and I reinvented it, dropped the tuning and added a bit more dynamics." • 'Intermission' marks the official return of the fabled drummer, who ten years ago, walked away from a successful music career that included stints as a founding member of Sunny Day Real Estate, The Fire Theft, and Foo Fighters. Together with his Assertion bandmates, guitarist/vocalist Justin Tamminga and, bassist Bryan Gorder, Assertion's debut LP, 'Intermission', is real, propulsive, and earnest -- a cathartic experience that proudly does not nestle nicely alongside current bands -- or really many releases at all from the last couple decades. The album conjures more connections to the heady grit and soaring grind of the 90's. Driving guitars anchored by a frenetic rhythm section. A haunting vocal delivery concealing a heartfelt sentiment. Track-by-track, the record builds into a dark and heavy crescendo but unpredictably retreats into delicate and fragile moments in masterful ways. Goldsmith adds, "A decade-long journey that started out walking away from music has led me right back to it and the very reason I started - but with a whole new appreciation and respect for it. I feel extremely fortunate to be part of this project. It's not just about making music. It's like a force of nature, but in an egoless collaboration that is nothing short of unconditional. The gratitude I have for being given the opportunity to release this music is beyond words. Thank you to everyone for your support through all these years." We want to hear from you! Interview with Losers
We had the pleasure of interviewing Losers over Zoom video! Berlin-based genre-defying band LOSERS have unveiled their long-awaited EP, EP01. With all four tracks, there were two halves to the production process - the initial ideas session followed by a more detailed fine tuning, all of which was separated by a couple of years. Not unlike an artist having lots of canvases with half-finished sketches to paint on, Losers have enjoyed the luxury of being able to finish things when the energy "felt right" and not rushing just so that they can say they've "finished a song." In tandem with the EP release, Losers have teamed up with Under The Radar to premiere the video for their witty, up tempo electro rock single "Fool Anyone." The inception of "Fool Anyone" came about nearly eight years ago when Eddy Temple-Morris created a guitar loop and a top line melody that immediately connected with multi-instrumentalist Tom Bellamy. The two then recorded it as a very basic demo, but they couldn't find the inspiration they needed to finish the rest of it. So the track actually sat in an unfinished state for years, to the point where the band forgot about it until they were taking stock one day in Berlin. Fast forward to 2020, they clicked on the track and straight away, they suddenly had the inspiration they needed in terms of what to write about. Bellamy states that even after watching The Social Dilemma and being aghast at the levels that Silicon Valley goes to in order to harness our attention, he found himself glued to technology. In watching, "Fool Anyone," the band wants people to question what it was they were watching and hopefully it will make people talk about the subject a bit more. Whereas "Fool Anyone" and the previous EP01 singles "Wake Up" and "Lost in Translation" really started to come to fruition after a "light at the end of the tunnel" epiphany at Primavera Festival in 2018, the band says the last track on the EP (the electronic infused indie rock number "Follow You") came about almost instantaneously in 2015. The tracks on EP01 showcase Losers journey from the heavy and somberness of their past into the lighthearted and hopeful present. Formed in 2007, Losers are comprised of DJ Eddy Temple-Morris, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Tom Bellamy (formerly of The Cooper Temple Clause), and guitarist/vocalist Paul Mullen (formerly of Yourcodenameis:milo and The Automatic). Hailed by critics and fellow artists alike who reveled in the band's ability to seamlessly merge indie electronic music with guitar rock, Losers have been so venerated that their dynamic and epically sweeping music has been heard in dozens of TV, film, videogames and sports placements including Game of Thrones, The Blacklist, Hercules, The Killing, and as the official theme music for BMX Championships London 2012 Olympic Games. Earlier this year, they released a reworking of Tears for Fears' 1985 smash "Shout" – which has been prominently featured in the hit show A Discovery of Witches (S2: Ep 4) on Amazon Prime, AMC+, Sundance Now, and Shudder and is not only rejuvenating their loyal fanbase but also winning over new fans who heard their dark cover and fell in love. Interview with Lifer
We had the pleasure of interviewing Lifer over Zoom video! After an 18-year hiatus, hard rockers Lifer surprised fans last year when they reemerged with three new songs that even Lead Vocalist Nick Coyle said was a "surreal experience." Now, the recently-reunited band is back with their fourth track "Hate Me Love Me" that will be part of a forthcoming five-song EP, solidifying the group's long-awaited resurrection. Described by Guitarist Aaron Fink as a "modern hard rock song that blends the old school sounds we grew up with, with a modern approach," the single veers slightly from the nu-metal music that the band first became known for in the early 2000s, yet still embodies their signature, heavy, melodically-driven sound. This evolution can be attributed to both Fink and Coyle's lifetime of experience – performing together and separately with some of the industry's biggest bands. In fact, during Lifer's hiatus in the early to mid-2000s, Fink joined Platinum-selling Breaking Benjamin (2002-2010) and then Gold-selling Earshot (present), while Coyle spent his tenure with his acclaimed indie rock band The Drama Club before joining Gold-selling Cold (2017-present). After Lifer reunited in 2018, they also added new member bassist Mike Morgan (The Drama Club, Panacea), and Tony Kruszka (originally the DJ for Lifer) moved to drums, helping to diversify the band's sound and leading many to tout the lineup as the strongest to date. Kruszka and Morgan are featured on all of Lifer's new material, including "The Start of Something Else," "Born Again," and "Lightning in a Bottle," which were written, recorded and released during the Pandemic. Lifer's forthcoming EP will be their first studio release since their debut, self-titled, full-length album (produced by Alex Lifeson of Rush) through the major label Universal Music and Republic Records in 2001.
