Interview with Frozen Soul
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Frozen Soul over Zoom video! Blue light. No heat. A glacial wall of denser-than-dense sound. Dallas Texas' Frozen Soul lives up to their name as the sound of death metal at its most cold and classic. Riff after slow, grinding riff, there's no mistaking the themes of isolation and suffering that permeate the quintet's massive sonic missives. From the first note of the Century Media debut, Crypt of Ice, it's like the march of Game of Thrones' Night King put to sound: nothing subtle about it at all. Frozen Soul's brand of straightforward, in-your-face death metal is a gasp of fresh air in a genre that's stretched the very limits of technicality. Fully formed in 2018, the quintet has rapidly made a name for itself and churned the underground with a sound that evokes the old school sound of bands like Obituary, Mortician and Bolt Thrower. That reverence for death metal's roots was apparent from Frozen Soul's initial four-song Encased In Ice demo (which includes a cover of Mortician's "Witch's Coven") that was released in early 2019 on California's cave dwelling, knuckle dragging, Maggot Stomp Records. Not that Frozen Soul's journey has exactly been overnight. The band's roots can be etched back to 2007 in Green's time as drummer in Metallic Hardcore turned Death Metal band, End Times. Blame it on the power of the blunt-force riff and a love for death metal's past, but in part, blame it on being a band from Texas, a state whose metal roots run deep. From Pantera to Power Trip, sheer heaviness runs in Frozen Soul's home state's musical bloodstream. A chance 2016 meeting with guitarist Michael Munday at a local comic book shop over a game of Magic: The Gathering laid the foundation for Frozen Soul. The two had an instant chemistry and shared love for the likes of games, music and well of course, Bolt Thrower, that became the primordial ooze from which Frozen Soul would eventually emerge. With End Times guitarist and Crypt of Ice producer/mixer Daniel Schmuck – who has also worked with the likes of Creeping Death and Power Trip – Frozen Soul came together quickly. Bassist, and Tattoo Artist Samantha Mobley, along with Drummer Brady Tripp would fill in the starting lineup and by early 2019, the band recorded their inaugural demo and played a near sold-out first show in March, opening a stacked bill topped by death metal contenders, Blood Incantation and Necrot. The band circulated through members which led to the addition of Green's long time friend and Drummer Matt Dennard, together hit the road to the West Coast by the Summer. In October they followed the West Coast tour up a run through the Midwest with thrash crossover monsters, Plague Years. A steady diet of in between local gigs with the likes of Gatecreeper, Exhumed, Vader and Obituary, really got their name out there among the local Texas scene, but hitting the frozen roads of the east coast in January 2020 with Death Thrashers Steel Bearing Hand brought their icy reign full circle solidifying their spot nationally. With every show, the band became a more oppressive wall of sound, a snow-machine enhanced atmosphere. In truth, Frozen Soul had arrived and both fans and the metal press had given them the stamp of approval. Just a few months after its release, the band's singular demo-turned-EP was already winning them high praise in many year-end critics' polls. Brooklyn Vegan pegged Frozen Soul for one of the most anticipated metal albums of 2020 and Invisible Orange's writer Rhys Williams gave Encased In Ice the #4 spot in his Top 10 records of 2019. In another surprise turn, the band received a call from Century Media and found themselves inking a worldwide deal with the label. With its line-up filled out by Steel Bearing Hand bassist, Chris Bonner playing second guitar, Frozen Soul entered the studio in early March 2020 to record its first full-length with forme --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Emma Jaye
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Emma Jaye over Zoom video. Dark, haunting, and sexy. Los Angeles is full of wannabe pop stars, but Emma Jaye is here to subvert them all / rise above the noise. The 23-year-old newcomer is committed to adding an underground edge to the mainstream, making music that sounds different and cool, provocative and new – and that's exactly what she's got in store this year, introducing herself through a set of alluring pop songs that will knock you down and pick you back up again. Music has always been Jaye's calling; "It's what I'm here to do," she says. Born and raised in New York, she began singing from a young age and found inspiration in everything from the Broadway musical Rent, to Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, and beyond. "I felt invisible as a kid and I never fit in," she reflects. "Music was then and is still now my life." An actress as well as a singer and songwriter, Jaye appeared in movies and on television, playing roles in "Boardwalk Empire", "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", "Spring Breakers", and "Barely Lethal," among others. While you may still see her onscreen from time to time, her heart is fully invested in her music: "I love acting, but it's not 'the' thing," she says. "I know for a fact that singing is my destiny," For Jaye, music is more than performance: It's a vessel for community and shared experience. "I see everyone as a potential family member, so I'm always trying to connect," she explains. "As a kid, music is the only thing I remember loving, and it didn't make me feel alone. I want to spread love as much as possible with my music: I want to spread love to people, and be the person that I needed, when I was a kid, for others who need that now." That love arrives in the form of songs like "Dumb," Jaye's first single of 2020," and "Overtime," its follow-up. "Not only are the lyrics good, not only are the beats good, but also it should FEEL good," she assets. "These tracks passed all those tests." A slick, in-your-face pop song that slaps with a glowing confidence, "Dumb" is a tongue-in-cheek first look at Jaye's developing artistry that highlights not only her expressive vocal prowess, but also her commitment to using her voice for good: "I wanted to start the year off with something catchy, fun and a little silly; to have a little more fun and freedom in my music," she says. "I've never really released a song like this," Jaye says of "Dumb." "The subject is totally out of left field for me; when you hear it and you see me, it throws you for a loop. It doesn't match anyone's expectations, which I thought was really cool about it – it takes people out of their comfort zones." On the surface, "Dumb" is an unapologetic meme-ready bop – but deeper down, it carries an important message. "It's a song that I made with everyone in mind," Jaye explains. "We live in a very strange culture, where people, especially women, are told that they should feel apologetic for feeling totally confident and beautiful. That needs to change, so I wrote a song to try and counteract it. It's all about feeling confident and beautiful in your own skin. I know it can be hard to feel that way all the time, but I'm hoping that this song can help." Jaye's hypnotic second single "Overtime" adds new depth to her repertoire as she dives into anxiety and stress – the things that make her tick. "It's sort of capturing the anguish of running circles in your mind, and the anxiety and head-spinning that brings… How you feel like the world's moving really quickly." "Overtime" is kind of the story of my life. If I came with a warning, my warning label would say, 'Caution: Very sensitive! Proceed with care,'" Jaye admits, jokingly adding, "and maybe, 'Feed me tacos occasionally!'" Such is the duality of Emma Jaye's music: She's talking about real issues and serious subjects, but she has a way of going about them in a fun, relaxed, yet consistently engagin --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Francisco Martin
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Francisco Martin over Zoom video! Francisco Martin is a singer/songwriter born and raised in San Francisco, CA. A multi-instrumentalist and producer, Martin's love for music sparked at a young age. Growing up in a music loving household, Martin was exposed to his father's favorite rock bands, the singer-songwriters loved by his mother and the soul music listened to by his older brother. Encouraged by his father, Martin began playing drums and singing at the age of nine. Expanding his musical knowledge, Martin picked up both the guitar and piano around his freshman year of high school which eventually led him to discover a love for producing. Francisco Martin is thrilled to release his debut single "Swollen" that is out now via 19 Recordings. Francisco wrote and produce the track "Swollen" by himself in his bedroom studio in Nevada. Francisco says, I wrote Swollen back in December after spending a day getting to know this amazing person. I haven't seen her since. The song is about falling for the idea of someone, but in reality you're the last thing on that person's mind." Martin's authentic sound is derived from his most beloved artists such as James Bay, John Mayer, Maggie Rogers and Ed Sheeran, coupled with the timeless classics that were played around his house. He describes his music and delicate songwriting as "the beauty and ugliness of heavy heartedness." Martin hopes his music will connect with those who share the idea of embracing the beauty of vulnerability and self-expression. We want to hear from you! Interview with Kat Edmonson
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kat Edmonson over Zoom video! Edmonson's new album Dreamers Do is out now via Spinnerette Records. Dreamers Do reached the #1 spot on Billboard's Traditional Jazz chart, and the album debuted #1 at iTunes Jazz, #2 Most Added at Jazzweek and was named Deezer's Album of the Week upon release. The album combines mid-20th century Disney songs (from Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Bedknobs on Broomsticks, Mary Poppins, Babes in Toyland), with familiar classics ("What A Wonderful World" as well as "All I Do is Dream of You" from Singin in the Rain), and features two new original songs from Edmonson ("Too Late to Dream" and "Someone's In The House.") "Dreamers Do takes place in a single night, from bedtime till morning. It's about our concepts around dreaming- all of the wonderful things and the fearful things, the things that keep us awake in the middle of the night," Edmonson explains of the new album, "It's also about the quiet power of merely having a dream. There are interludes between the songs indicating different points in this nocturnal journey and if someone wants to listen to the entire record as an experience, it's available to them." The LP follows the release of 2018's Old Fashioned Gal, which Billboard calls "an intimate journey from doubt to resolve and implied triumph." NPR Music raves the album is "a handsome showcase for her songwriting, which has grown ever more confident over the last decade," while the Associated Press says the record "sounds like an alternate soundtrack to an Audrey Hepburn film." In 2014 Edmonson released The Big Picture, which debuted at #1 on Billboard's Heatseekers, #1 on Contemporary Jazz Chart, and #2 on Total Jazz Chart. Her 2015 performance on "CBS This Morning: Saturday" garnered the program's highest rated viewership since 2006. Her 2012 LP Way Down Low was described by The New York Times as "fresh as a spring bouquet," and her performances at WNYC's Soundcheck and Daytrotter were included in "Best Live Performances" and "Best Sessions of 2012," respectively. The Texas native began crafting her signature sound while performing in Austin's local club circuit for years before releasing her debut LP Take To The Sky in 2009. She went on to tour worldwide with high profile acts including Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Gary Clark Jr., Shawn Colvin, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Nick Lowe and more. We want to hear from you! Interview with Shungudzo
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Shungudzo over Zoom video! Zimbabwe-born artist, producer, songwriter, and activist Shungudzo releases the three-track I (motsi), the first chapter from a forthcoming collection of music arriving in 2021. Written and produced by Shungudzo earlier this year as the world ignited in protest, the project aims to inspire, unite and enlighten with music and poetry for this generation. Shungudzo (Shun for short) is releasing I (motsi) through her own label Svikiro Records, in partnership with Young Forever/BMG. Shun is also sharing a new video for I (motsi)'s lead track "It's a good day (to fight the system)," a bold genre-defying anthem that balances passionate proclamations with sunny guitar and horn arrangements and stacked harmonies. Created from a story by Shungudzo, directed by Jonah Lincoln Best (Kesha, Big Freedia) and produced by Shun and Magic Seed, the video explores the potential for growth that lies within us all, just as the track serves as a rallying cry for Americans to vote, and for people around the world to fight, daily and forever, against the systems that oppress them. "For these songs I chose to forget every rule I've overheard, and instead do what felt most natural to me," says Shungudzo. "I wrote, recorded and produced these songs at home, and to retain the authenticity of my story, didn't allow any outside input or instrumentation until my vision for each song was unshakable. I hope they plant love, water hope and unearth the kind of frustration that motivates us to grow and to encourage growth within our communities." I (motsi)'s second track, "Fatherless child" pivots from universal to personal, as Shun sings of being raised in a broken family. "This is a song for anyone who has felt the pain of not having the kind of closeness they desire, or have been culturally trained to desire, with their family," she says. Shugudzo's perceptions of the world and hunger to push for change formed as a child in post-colonial Zimbabwe, and were fortified when her family moved back to America. "It was like waking up to a slap in the face," Shun says, "To realize that the 'American Dream' doesn't come true for everyone. To watch my mother work so hard and still be on food stamps, wearing donated clothing. And then to look around and see so many other people in worse situations, failed by both their government and human decency. America showed me that the system is broken everywhere and, as a result, so are we." When Shungudzo was five years old, she made a promise to herself to write a poem every day for the rest of her life. That pledge bears fruit on I (motsi)'s third track, "Silence, hate, beat, kill," an impassioned and mostly spoken-word incantation, with a capella backing, in which Shun draws strength from the struggle, and inspiration to battle indifference. In addition to her own poetry and songwriting, Shungudzo has written for Little Mix, Chiiild, and Jessie Ware among others. She is also a talented dancer and gymnast, and was the first female artistic gymnast of color to compete on the Zimbabwean National Team. Before pursuing music full time, she ran a media company and attended Stanford University. She now lives in Los Angeles. We want to hear from you!
