Interview with JP Harris
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing JP Harris over Zoom audio! A few days before Christmas, JP Harris hummed himself a melody and penned a tongue-in-cheek tune about the increasing prominence of disinformation, conspiracies, and the wildly inaccurate claims of "fake news" surrounding both the COVID-19 pandemic and the US election. On Christmas morning at 6:30 AM, he was awoken by the detonation of one of the largest car bombs in American history, blowing a fireball high above the Nashville skyline just a few miles away. It spurred him to finish what was originally a cathartic, inward exercise, and to record a video of the song on New Year's Day that was released via his social media channels. Serendipitously, the video went viral (being reposted by none other than pop star P!nk) and at the behest of many friends and fans, JP rushed into the studio to record a full band version shortly thereafter. JP Harris says, "this song isn't so much about individual conspiracy theories or movements, extremist political factions, doomsday nut jobs, or the insanity of Trumpist Republicanism, but rather about the absurdity of where the age of the internet and intentional disinformation has landed us." The song is now available to stream or purchase on all platforms, and is the first new release since 2018. We want to hear from you! Interview with Zayde Wolf
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Zayde Wølf over Zoom video! Nashville based writer and producer Zayde Wølf is storming into 2021 with a tour de force and fist pumping powerful new song "Back At It." This powerhouse of a song sets the tone for what is bound to be a huge year for Dustin Burnett the mastermind behind Zayde Wølf. "Back at It" is the first single from Wølf's third full length album due out this spring. The album follows the 2018 release of Modern Alchemy, Wølf's sophomore full length album, which charted in over 25 countries on the iTunes charts and debuted in the top ten on the iTunes Alternative chart in the U.S. within hours of it's release. Unintimidated by his past successes, Burnett has always been solely focused on making music that helps listeners to push through and overcome life's challenges, trust that broken hearts eventually heal, and to remember that music is one of our most powerful tools for connecting us to one another. Burnett has experienced the power of music firsthand, and he's made it his mission to share it with the rest of the world. This motivational mentality of transcending the past, and not allowing it to define who you will be, are not just concepts Burnett has embraced, but it's how he has lived his life. Raised in Metropolis, a small town in Illinois best known for its fictional favorite son, Clark Kent, the level of success Burnett has achieved, both personally and professionally, is beyond anything he ever imagined or that was expected of him growing up. All of Burnett's accolades may seem to be the makings of an obvious solo success, but the Zayde Wolf project came somewhat accidentally. Five years later the Zayde Wølf empire has grown to 236K YouTube subscribers, 82 million video views, over 1.2 Million monthly listeners on Spotify, with 300 million streams across all streaming platforms. This is on top of the hundreds of films, TV shows, trailers, commercials, and video games that have featured his music. The list includes Shameless, Skyscraper movie, Love-Simon movie, the Jack Reacher 2, The Maze Runner 3, Pride Prejudice & Zombies, spots for UFC, MLB, NFL, Dodge, Jeep, WWE, Xbox, NBA, and more. In addition to syncs, Wølf has creatively expanded his reach by cultivating partnerships with brands such as Dude Perfect, one of the top YouTube sports channels with over 54 Million subscribers and 12 Billion views. Other creative partnerships include collaborations with Fortnite champion DrLupo, and extreme downhill racers Rémy Métailler and Matt Walker. Last year Burnett partnered with the NHL and NBC sports for the Stanley Cup Finals where they used the Zayde Wølf track "Home" in a spot featuring Burnett performing the songHERE, and most recently was the featured celebrity guest on the Gamer Hour where Burnett and Host Chris Puckett talked about their love for video games and went head to head live playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. Interview with Justin Roberts
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Justin Roberts over Zoom video! Three-time GRAMMY nominee's newest studio album, available on February 28, 2020. Following 13 albums of original songs for children, three-time Grammy nominee Justin Roberts presents his latest album, Wild Life, with something for all ages. Joined by an eclectic group of instrumentalists including pianist Lisa Kaplan (Eighth Blackbird) baroque cellist Anna Steinhoff, percussionist Gerald Dowd (Robbie Fulks), and vocalist Nora O'Connor (Flat Five, the Decemberists), this tender and uplifting collection of songs is his most personal project yet. Wild Life is inspired by the birth of Roberts' first child and includes songs about anticipation, uncertainty, unconditional love and advice for a life well-lived. The lyrics are honest and fresh with a hint of darkness that speaks not only to the journey of parenthood but the vast gamut of the human experience. The sounds range from finger-plucked ukulele to pulsing flutes and moving bass lines with ethereal touches of piano. His wife Anna Steinhoff's pizzicato cello is used in lieu of bass at most opportunities. This moving album evokes the wonder of what poet Mary Oliver called this "one wild and precious life." The final track, "Wild Life," is written by Justin's longtime friend Craig Wright; a playwright, screenwriter and producer. Wright is known most widely for his work on Six Feet Under, Lost and more recently as creator and executive producer of Greenleaf on the OWN Network. The album is produced by Chicago-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Davis, who has worked with Justin for over 20 years. Davis was a founding member of the power pop band Frisbie as well as an essential member of Justin's touring band, the Not Ready for Naptime Players. Interview with Bailey Bryan
Together with Americans Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Bailey Bryan over Zoom video! Bailey Bryan is kicking off 2021 not with an expected celebratory New Years bop, but with "Sober" -- a gorgeously constructed, melancholic reflection on a love-hangover that feels all-too-relatable. Out today is the track's chillingly profound music video where glitter, plastic champagne glasses, Chinese takeout and silver balloons litter the floor as Bailey pleads to a lover to remember her after the buzz of their young love wears off It's her second track since announcing her current 'Fresh Start' music project, following the title track which SPIN debuted and UpRoxx named some of the "best new pop music from this week" back in early December. After a successful debut as a rising talent in the Nashville singer/songwriter circuit followed by an artistic evolution encompassing the R&B & indie pop universes, Bailey Bryan was ready for her "fresh start". A chance to let go of the relationships and emotional baggage that no longer served her and carve out a new path of self-discovery. Though initially forged in the fires of heartbreak, this next chapter is an amalgamation of themes about owning one's worth, turning insecurities into strengths, excavating your fears, confronting your demons and discovering the flawed perfection in all of us -- all while sticking to her personal "sensitive bad bitch" mission statement. In Bailey's words on SBB "people look at these two concepts ("sensitive" and "bad bitch") as opposites and to me, they absolutely go together and empower each one and that's the goal of the music." All are welcome to join the SBB Club HERE. Of the new nine-song 'Fresh Start' music project, she adds "you can grow into a new mindset every single day if you want to...This project is just me owning that, and revealing it in my own way, each song representing a moment that triggered that sort of growth." Along with new music, Bailey is also launched Fresh Start Stories back in December, a monthly Instagram Live series where she'll be performing the new track of the month, giving fans insight into how it plays a part in her own self-discovery, as well as interviewing influencers, brands, artists, and more across all industries to discuss their fresh start experiences. Watch the first episode with special guest Serayah HERE. About Bailey Bryan: Previously praised by New York Times for her "rich songwriting," Bailey is returning to music with pop-tinged tunes that showcase a newfound confidence and vision. Bailey is bringing the words "sensitive bad bitch" to life - "I'm coming from the most confident place I've ever made music from... I have a clear vision of who I am and what I'm worth more than ever before." Bailey lets you into her past year as she discusses upholding her standards, admitting feelings and generally being true to yourself. Recent singles "play w/ me" (produced by Rihanna & Selena Gomez production team Monsters & Strangerz), "Roster," and "Steal Your Girl" have generated buzz and put her on the map as one to watch. "Roster" has already sparked a viral moment with over 1.1 million views on TikTok to date. "play w/ me" also currently serves as the official theme song for influencer and content creator Serena Kerrigan's Instagram Live dating show, Let's Fucking Date. We want to hear from you! Interview with Django Django
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Django Django over Zoom video! As we get closer to the release of Django Django's highly anticipated fourth album, 'Glowing in the Dark' (12 Feb), we release Free From Gravity, the third single in the album campaign. Following on the heels of the pulsing album title track, "Free From Gravity" represents an arresting about turn for the band – a beautiful anthem about escape and perhaps the most complete expression of the album's central themes coming together. Beautiful cascading bleep melodies and strings wrap around the funkiest stop-start drum machine and a relentlessly infectious bassline to perfectly embody the bittersweet theme of yearning to "escape everything that's weighing you down." The band explain: "it's really about the planet being in such a mess that we eventually have to leave". The track comes accompanied by a stunning music video by British director Jim Canty that was shot on location in Mystic, Connecticut over the holiday period. It documents a day in the life of an adorable child dressed in a green alien costume…or is it a child? Glowing in the Dark will be released via Because Music on 12 February 2021 on limited edition glow-in-the-dark vinyl, standard black vinyl, CD and digital download/streaming on all usual platforms. Interview with Topic and ATB
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Topic and ATB over Zoom video! Legendary German producer/DJ/songwriter ATB teams up with Topic and A7S on "Your Love (9pm)" – the first-ever official remake of ATB's breakthrough 1998 hit, "9pm (Till I Come)." Working together in a German studio, ATB and Topic flawlessly blended their musical styles to create the track, along with A7S, who finalized the lyrics via video call. "Over the past 20 years, I've received so many requests for collaborations, remakes and cover versions of my song '9pm (Till I Come)' but I passed on them all because I was never really satisfied with the sound of the approach nor the final," explains ATB. "Then I listened to Topic's 'Breaking Me' together with Rudi (management) and we immediately had the feeling that these two sound worlds could fuse together perfectly." Fit for the TikTok generation, ATB & Topic's reimagined version features A7S' soaring vocals and a powerful, full-bodied bassline alongside the distinctive guitar hook and sun-kissed trance energy that made the original a worldwide hit. "'9pm (Till I Come)' is an absolute dance classic that I've known and loved since I was little," says Topic. "It is therefore a great honor to be the first to reissue this number together with ATB. The typical ATB guitar riff paired with my 'melancholic dance music' sound and the unmistakable voice of A7S results in a perfect symbiosis!" "Your Love (9pm)" follows on from what has been a career-defining year for German/Croatian producer Topic and Swedish singer/songwriter A7S. Their first collaboration, "Breaking Me," became one of the most successful singles of 2020, amassing more than one billion combined global streams. The song hit No. 1 on the Mediabase U.S. dance radio tally, iTunes and the Global Top 200 Shazam chart, earning certifications in 27 countries around the world, including Gold status in the U.S. and Platinum in the U.K. The duo enlisted GRAMMY®-nominated U.S. rapper Lil Baby for the follow-up single, "Why Do You Lie To Me," which has racked up over 35 million Spotify streams and garnered strong U.K. radio support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, Capital FM and Kiss FM. ATB's "9pm (Till I Come)" topped the U.K.'s Official Singles chart in 1999, becoming the first trance song to reach No. 1 in Britain. It entered the top 10 in numerous countries, including Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart in the U.S., where it opened the door for electronic dance music on mainstream radio. The song's enduring appeal is highlighted in this clip, which shows Ed Sheeran and Max Martin dancing to "9pm." ATB's subsequent string of hits – which included "Don't Stop," "Ecstasy," "Let U Go," "What About Us," "Move On" and 'When It Ends It Starts Again" – has consistently earned him a spot in the prestigious DJ Mag "Top 100" poll for nearly two decades. He has released 10 studio albums and more than 40 singles, earning Platinum and Gold awards in numerous countries. While paying homage to an iconic '90s dance track, ATB, Topic and A7S have delivered a thoroughly modern anthem with "Your Love (9pm)." We want to hear from you! Interview with Jim Keller of Tommy Tutone
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Keller over Zoom video! Jim Keller has shared "Find My Shadow," a brand new song and video from his upcoming album By No Means (February 12). While each song on the new album features Los Lobos frontman David Hidalgo on guitar, this new offering is particularly special for the legend's work accentuating Keller's rich bass notes on vocal duties. The pair are joined on "Find My Shadow," and throughout the new album, by the top-notch rhythm section of Michael Urbano (Todd Rundgren, John Hiatt) and Bob Glaub (Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon), as well as by producer Mitchell Froom (Randy Newman, Crowded House) - who also hosted the recording sessions in his Los Angeles home studio as seen in the accompanying "Find My Shadow" visual. Keller adds: "what I love about the song is the melody is upbeat and happy, like a Roger Miller tune, but the lyrics are really about being lost." Listen to "Find My Shadow" and watch the in-studio visual via American Songwriter: https://americansongwriter.com/jim-keller-of-tommy-tutone-fame-debuts-new-single-with-david-hidalgo/ Pre-order By No Means here: https://ffm.to/bynomeans "Keller has a knack for making seemingly simple lines sink a little deeper, especially when you add them all up in connection with the world-weary gravitas of his rumbling voice.... but it's Keller's songwriting, wry and understated, yet always gently stirring, holds center court." - American Songwriter By No Means marks the next chapter in one of music's most unusual careers. In addition to his lauded solo work, Keller penned the smash hit "867-5309 / Jenny" as a member of Tommy Tutone in the 80s and has served as Philip Glass' manager over many of the intervening years. His songs have earned high praise from Tom Waits, who noted they "make me feel like I have big plans, no worries and all my hair." Keller also counts Nels Cline and Marc Ribot as supporters and collaborators, and they are among over two dozen musicians who've re-worked "Don't Get Me Started," another track from By No Means, over the past year.
