Interview with Runkus
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Runkus over Zoom video! Jamaica's RUNKUS takes listeners into his world on the new album IN:SIDE, an immersive meditation on life, love and technology in the age of quarantines and lockdowns. The 10-track LP, which features appearances from Tarrus Riley, Naomi Cowan, Royal Blu, Jesse Royal, Kabaka Pyramid and Munga Honorable, hits streaming platforms today via L.A. record label Delicious Vinyl Island and the artist's own Runkus Music imprint. Blending the cultural gravitas of roots reggae and dancehall with the energy of trap and the intricate wordplay of classic hip-hop, Runkus is known for making music with a global, yet unmistakably Jamaican, perspective. When a 24-hour lockdown was imposed on his hometown of Portmore in April—with no one allowed to leave or enter— he hunkered down to create the most provocative and challenging work of his career, recording a new song each day. "It was one of those apocalyptic moments in life," the artist says of the frantic paranoia that enveloped his community during the shutdown. "Youknow when you watch a movie and you see everybody just fret? It was really like that. My thing was fightor flight: Would I panic too, stress and get depressed? Or make music?"IN:SIDE captures this moment, reflecting the anxieties of life in the age of isolation, along with the hopeful promise of a better future. "TAN A YUH YAAD" (Which takes its title from the Jamaican slang phrase used by Prime Minister Andrew Holness during the Portmore lockdown) and "THE MASK:2ND WAVE" explores the realities of this new world, creating a timely soundtrack for these unprecedented times. With "5Gs," selected as one of the best reggae/dancehall singles of 2020 by LargeUp.com and Pandora, Ruckus aligns with top Jamaican lyricists Jesse Royal, Kabaka Pyramid, Royal Blu and Munga Honorableto deliver a blistering commentary on technology and the spread of information. "EVERYBODY GOINGLIVE" (featuring Naomi Cowan) and "QUARANTINE SLIDE" engage themes of escapism, commenting on topics like social media obsession and interrupted love, while Jamaican music great Tarrus Riley joinsRunkus on the jazzy, soulful closing track "MAKE IT BREATHE". IN:SIDE is supported by IN:SIDE Portmore, a mini-doc filmed during the project's recording, as well as videos for "$$$", "5Gs" and "QUARANTINE SLIDE". We want to hear from you! Interview with Dylan Dunlap
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Dylan Dunlap over Zoom video! LA-based singer/songwriter Dylan Dunlap recently dropped his first single of 2021, "Follow My Echo" Dylan speaks on "Follow My Echo": "I used to go to the movies every few days for an escape and really struggled for a bit when everything shut down back in March. I thought that the best way to cope with a pandemic was to write about anything other than a pandemic, so I decided to write about one of my favorite movies instead: Finding Nemo. I don't know if it's because I was 7 or because Thomas Newman is one of the best film composers of all time, but that movie holds such a special place in my heart and there are so many lessons in it. I resonate so much with the message of learning to let go of somebody, but also never giving up on them. Because I'm human, I often think that I can solve other people's problems for them. Sometimes I get so carried away about thinking how I can help that I forget I can only truly take care of myself. I'm also the absolute worst at taking my own advice. It's important to remind myself that I can be there for others, but I can't make their decisions for them, nor can they for me. We're all going to make mistakes along the way and it's up to us to encourage one another to at least try our best than to give up so quickly." MORE INFO: The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Dylan Dunlap developed a love for music at a very young age. At age 6, he taught himself piano to partake in a grade school talent show. At age 11, he picked up a copy of Pro Tools and crafted instrumental compositions "like time capsules." As a teen, Dylan left the prestigious Berklee College of Music to get a head start on his music career and started busking in his hometown of Burbank, CA. Inspired by the likes of Coldplay and Mumford & Sons, he simultaneously fashioned a singular style, infusing cinematic scope and alternative eloquence into power pop. Over the last two years, he supported OneRepublic at the sold-out Stadium of Fire event in Provo, UT while releasing his first-ever original "Microphones & Lights," toured across the US and the UK, dropped his debut EP Things I Can't Explain and demonstrated a versatile songwriting prowess, writing with artists across country, hip-hop, pop and electronic genres. Most recently, Dylan released what would become his breakout single, "If That's Alright." Dylan has quietly amassed over 20 million streams and is currently recording new music for the follow up EP to be released via Nettwerk Records. On top of his artist pursuits, Dylan has put in countless hours of work to raise awareness around mental health. In this mission, Dylan received the "Fighting Stigma Rising Star" award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness and has partnered with Global Citizen, Autism Rocks, LA's Children Hospital and many other organizations. Interview with Mike Dillon
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Dillon over Zoom video! Mike Dillon has spent the last three decades performing well over 200 shows a year with both his own band, as well as playing vibraphone and percussion with artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Les Claypool and Ani DiFranco. So when the pandemic hit in early 2020 forcing Dillon off the road, he instinctively directed his perpetually restless creative energy to writing and recording. Recently relocating to Kansas City after spending 15 years in New Orleans, Dillon and producer Chad Meise would track a trilogy of albums: 'Shoot The Moon,' 'Suitcase Man' and '1918.' In collaboration with his longtime record label Royal Potato Family, they would offer the records exclusively via Bandcamp just days after they were mixed and mastered. In 2021, those albums now receive the full vinyl treatment, as well as complete digital release across all streaming outlets. The first of the three records, 'Shoot The Moon,' is a ten track collection that Dillon describes as "Punkadelic-Funk-Psych" focused heavily on the current political climate in the United States. Assembling an assortment of stylistically uncompromising musicians to contribute, its line-up features Matt Chamberlain, Steven Bernstein, Nicholas Payton, Robbie Seahag Mangano, Jean-Paul Gaster and Nick Bockrath among others. Highlights include the apocalyptic road warrior anthem "Drivin' Down The Road," a swirling New Orleans jazz-raga "Further Adventures in Misadventures" and the snarling punk rock diatribe "Quool Aid Man" with its indictment of the American right: "old men and their guns." The second recording in the series, 'Suitcase Man' is a nine-song cycle through which Dillon examine his life and choices made over the past 55 years. It's a distinct entry in his extensive discography, notable for its strikingly honest lyricism and minimalist arrangements that incorporate sparse vibraphone and percussion with a handful of background vocals by Tiff Lamson of Givers and frequent collaborator JJ Jungle. Songs like "Empty Bones," "Turkish Rose" and "Matthew" represent Dillon at his most creatively daring, while confirming his ascent into the upper echelon of cult music outsiders in the lineage of artists like Tom Waits, Harry Partch and Captain Beefheart. Dillon completes the trilogy with '1918.' The focal point here are Dillon's instrumentals: the dank and dark Moog/tabla/vibraphone psych vibe of "Pinocchio," (listen/share) the electro analog trance of "Pelagic" and the jungle groove, space rock of the title track. Dillon once again calls on friends like drummer Earl Harvin and guitarist Shane Theriot to assist. Thematically speaking, the material addresses the Covid-19 pandemic and recent social unrest. "The parallels between 1918 and 2020 are immense. We just have fancier toys, but the tunnel vision and mammalian tendencies are the same if not greater," explains Dillon. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Mike Dillon got his start as a sideman, playing in such varied projects as MC 900 Foot Jesus, Brave Combo and Secret Chiefs 3. He's also served as an integral member of bands like Critters Buggin, Garage A Trois, Dead Kenny Gs and Nolatet, while leading Billy Goat, Hairy Apes BMX and Malachy Papers. Under his own name, he's amassed an extensive catalog of genre-defying recordings. All Music called his most recent release 'Rosewood,' recorded prior to the 2020 pandemic lockdown, "a hypnotic album that pulls you deep inside a percussive, sylvan-toned dreamscape." Touring relentlessly, Dillon has built one of the most loyal fanbases on the underground music scene, while being invited to share bills with bands including Clutch, Umphrey's McGee and Dean Ween Group We want to hear from you! Interview with Catie Turner
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Catie Turner over Zoom video! Catie Turner has released her eagerly awaited new single, "Play God," available now at all DSPs and streaming services HERE. The moving track is joined by a lyric video, streaming now HERE. "'Play God' is a sad song about not being able to fix a relationship and how the memories of places and sounds are triggered to one person; the type of song you listen to on a road trip and pretend you are a different person to," Catie shared. "I wrote it because I was trying to fix a relationship but realized I had exhausted all my options and needed someone else to meet me, I couldn't do the entire relationship maintenance by myself. Hence it being a sad song. I hope you guys like it as much as I do🤞🏻" "Play God" follows Catie's recent anthemic single "One Day." "One Day" was joined by a sweet official companion visual which played on ABC alongside an interview with Catie to celebrate the release. The track was met with critical acclaim with American Songwriter stating, "'One Day' is an elegant, clear example of how Turner's down-to-earth feelings and every day experiences haven't gotten lost in favor of topics or sounds that are more aggressive, trendy, or edgy, solely to surprise the millions now listening and watching," POPULAR TV raving "[t]he lyrics are emotionally wistful and its bubbly instrumental keeps it light throughout the song, instilling feelings of hope in listeners" and Luna Collective adding "Turner showcases her emotional vulnerability and honestly through her music." Named among Idolator's "On The Verge: 40 Artists To Watch In 2020," Catie Turner first began writing songs and playing guitar in her hometown of Langhorne, PA, music providing her a means to cope with the social anxiety and myriad pressures placed upon a young woman in high school. The 20-year-old artist captured national attention in 2018 as one of the standout stars of ABC's American Idol, kicking off the season with a stunning audition performance of her own extraordinary composition, "21st Century Machine," immediately winning over judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry, who applauded her a "genius songwriter." With her potent, personal lyricism and soulful vocals, the multi-talented Turner is showing no signs of slowing down. Stay tuned for more new music coming soon from this rising star! Interview with Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Psychedelic Porn Crumpets over Zoom video! Perth's prominent experimental quintet – Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – have quickly become one of Australia's hottest prospects, uncovering all kinds of weirdness and psychotic fuzz in their deceptively concise and punchy sonic warfare. Today they announce their monolithic new album, SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, set for release February 5, 2021. Despite much of this year's tour plans being put on pause, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have used their time off road to continue preparing themselves for the release of their fourth studio release, and an eventual blistering return to stages around the world with a heavy-hitter of an album primed for the live space. From SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets share a new effervescent taste of music in their new single, "Tally-Ho". The track revels in creative hedonism, written to engage the senses and make your ears tingle with excitement. "I wanted something that could encapsulate loads of fun and sound a bit strange," explains founding singer/guitar Jack McEwan, who was awarded first place in Music Radar's top ten list of the best new guitar players in the world right now. "Like painting a colourful image of this distant world." Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have already given fans an early taste of the forthcoming SHYGA! era, with "Mr. Prism" back in August. Earning acclaim upon its release across Spotify, Apple Music, Triple J, BBC Radio One as well as NME, CLASH, The Line Of Best Fit and Rolling Stone Australia, "Mr. Prism" signaled something special was building in Perth, that Psychedelic Porn Crumpets were gearing up for something big. The creation of SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, especially off the back of 2019's acclaimed LP And Now For The Whatchamacallit, came together in a different environment for McEwan and the results speak to the band's evolution and McEwan's evolution as a songwriter and musician. "For the first time in a long time I was home without any tours booked, no work, no deadlines and I felt free to create. My writing process became ritualistic; every morning starting with a small walk to the local bottle shop at 11am and writing whatever flowed, allowing myself to design in all styles without boundaries, and not trying to theme the album early on. I haven't had the luxury of writing this way since the first record, which I spent almost a year working on. It felt like I was myself again, creating without opinion or constraints. I was gliding through weeks with a day seeming to pass," McEwan explains. In just a few years Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have quickly amassed a dedicated fanbase spanning genres and generations. 2019 saw sold out shows across North America, UK, Europe and Australia; not to mention spots on Desert Daze and Splendour in the Grass. Shyga! The Sunlight Mound carries on and seeds the band as one today's hardest working acts and artists you need to watch out for. The career-defining record's pulsating charge and expert riffs build and build until its final moments. Shyga! The Sunlight Mound is out now via Marathon Artists. We want to hear from you! Interview with Inspired & the Sleep
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Inspired & the Sleep over Zoom video! Max Green is an East LA songwriter/producer that keeps all sorts of busy in town currently with 4 main projects: Experimental Indie Pop live band, Inspired & the Sleep, a solo pop endeavour as a topliner and songwriter as Max Green, and lastly two LoFi projects: braj mahal & URCHN. For Inspired & the Sleep, we just put out an EP on friday called 'Reimagine' that features a handful of revamped/recreated versions of a few songs off of our self titled LP in a wintery semi-acoustic vibe. This record release also announces that we will be releasing a limited run of multi-colored Vinyl alongside LA based label Vinyl Moon (whose released NoMbe, Sego, Mating Ritual). Album Vinyl Preorder: https://vinylmoon.co/collections/shop-all/products/inspired-the-sleep-s-t-lp-vm-edition-ltd-to-100 These songs are a landmark of the projects development over the last few years for songwriter/producer Max Greenhalgh and multi-instrumentalist Bryce Outcault. The record was started right at the time of Greenhalgh's move from San Diego to East LA. The record was conceived in bedrooms, practice spaces, and studios over the course of two years and summarizes the projects artistic development from its origins as a Lo-Fi bedroom project. The record is chalk full of lush instrumentation, unique syncopation, clever sampling in the form of 11 pop gems. Bio: Inspired & the Sleep is the Los Angeles-via-San Diego based musical project of songwriter/producer Max Greenhalgh and multi-instrumentalist Bryce Outcault. With a revolving lineup of additional players, Greenhalgh and Outcault produce pop arrangements that are at once warmly familiar and sweetly off-kilter. Incorporating traditional indie-rock instrumentation with various electronic elements and vinyl sampling, the pop-rock outfit perpetually reinvents their sound while staying true to their groove-oriented backbone. Greenhalgh's gentle crooning on matters of intimacy, introspection and love — both lost and found — solidifies the project's pop ethos over an ever-shifting sonic backdrop. We want to hear from you! Interview with Jodi Valentin
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jodi Valentin over Zoom video! Jodi Valentin is an American pop artist, often found singing heartfelt, story-based ballads behind a piano. She's been fortunate enough to work under the thumb of Roger Waters of Pink Floyd and Nigel Godrich during an Internship program at Soundtrack Studios, and worked with producer David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Taking Back Sunday, Tony Bennett, Matisyahu, etc.) on her 2015 single, "The Radio". Fortunately, she also sat beside Maggie Rogers at NYU Clive Davis, where they'd critique each other's songwriting. Additional classmates include Emily Warren, Phoebe Ryan, and Fletcher. Jodi Valentin is gearing up for the release of her new EP, Hindsight, later this year. The EP includes the singles "Blue Eyes" which was added to over 100 TikTok videos and saved on Spotify by 2,000 + listeners. Check out Jodi Valentin's new song Hindsight. We want to hear from you! Interview with Satsang
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Satsang over Zoom video! On 'All. Right. Now.,' Satsang's extraordinary new album and debut release for venerated indie label SideOneDummy, it's also his muse. Written and recorded during an extended hiatus from the road, the record finds McManus reconnecting with his Montana roots and exploring a whole new palette of sounds and textures, drawing on classic country and modern Americana to forge a joyful, rustic collection all about letting go and living in the moment. McManus produced the album himself, and while the songs here are certainly honest and deeply personal, they're written in a spiritual language that taps into something far more universal, something inherent in the human condition that binds us as brothers and sisters on a shared journey to find ourselves and our place in this world. The performances and arrangements are broad and spacious to match, reflecting the wide-open fields and soaring mountains that surrounded the band during the whirlwind recording process, and the result is a lush, organic collection fueled by acoustic guitars, fiddle, and pedal steel, a warm, inviting record that hints at everything from Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks to Gregory Alan Isakov and The Head and the Heart as it meditates on the power—and the pull—of home. Though McManus was born in Montana, he actually spent much of his formative years in Des Moines and Chicago. His childhood was troubled, to say the least, marked by physical abuse at home and a nose for trouble on the rough streets that surrounded him, and by his late teens, he was struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. After returning to Montana for rehab, he got clean and sober, married the woman of his dreams, and launched Satsang with 'The Story Of You,' the band's breakout 2016 debut. Steeped in reggae, hip-hop, and world music, the album was an uplifting affirmation that connected with fans around the globe, racking up roughly 15 millions streams on Spotify alone. McManus and his bandmates returned a year later with their similarly successful sophomore effort, 'Pyramid(s),' which hit #1 on the Billboard Reggae Chart and #2 on iTunes, and pushed their sound even further with 2019's 'Kulture,' which incorporated a wider swath of influences from Motown to Tom Petty. Relentless road warriors, the group built a devoted following one night at a time, sharing stages with the likes of Michael Franti & Spearhead and Nahko and Medicine for the People as they worked their way up from bars and clubs to massive festivals. "When you're dealt a tough hand, you can either get bitter or you can get better," says McManus. "You can blame your upbringing for everything and complain about what happened to you, or you can choose to believe that everything happened for you, to step into your power and become the person you want to be." In Montana, that's precisely what McManus has done, turning his dreams into reality in a place that, some days, feels more like Heaven than Earth. "My wife, my kids, Montana, they're all one thing to me now," says McManus. "They're home." We want to hear from you! Interview with Molly Kate Kestner
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Molly Kate Kestner over Zoom video! LA-based, Austin, MN native, singer/songwriter Molly Kate Kestner, is best known for her viral hit "His Daughter," which gained her worldwide attention in 2014. Molly recently released her latest single and music video for "Get Up". "Get Up", co-written with my client, Gigi Rowe, is an anthem of empowerment. It's about that driving force that keeps you going in times of adversity, something we can all relate to, especially in these recent trying times. The video for "Get Up" is a labor of love, a full independent production in the midst of COVID-19: "...We were able to create a tight-knit crew of close friends where each person played a vital role. We had to have everything planned out ahead of time & virtually since everyone was socially distanced...We woke up before the sun. We dug trenches in the dirt and rock. We climbed 45 minutes up a mountain with no trail in 105 degree weather. We didn't finish shooting until the sun was going down. It was NOT easy. But it was one of the most incredible things I've ever done with some of the most talented people I've ever known…" About Molly Kate Kestner: Molly Kate Kestner is a singer/songwriter whose soulful voice and timeless lyrics have set her apart since she was just a teenager. She was propelled into the music industry spotlight when her first original song she wrote at 17 years old went viral. "His Daughter," an emotional ballad she recorded for her friends and family received over 1.5 million views in less than two weeks (it currently sits at 16+ million), got her a performance on Good Morning America, and eventually led to a major label recording contract - something this small town Minnesota native had only dreamed of. Molly Kate moved to Los Angeles in 2016 and has been busy writing songs for herself as well as for other established artists, such as Kelly Clarkson & Andy Grammer. She has released seven singles with Atlantic Records. Her song "Compromise" landed a national Jeep Campaign while her most popular release, "Prom Queen", reached over 40 million streams on Spotify & Apple Music. In 2019, Molly released her first independent single since "His Daughter". One week after it's release, she performed the song with 30,000 choir students to form the largest choir in America: The American Young Voices. It's since been used in various nationwide placements such as American Idol & So You Think You Can Dance. When the world turned upside down in 2020, Kestner took the time to reflect and write. During that time she organized a virtual benefit concert to raise awareness and funds against human trafficking with over 6 thousand people tuning in and $10,000 raised. Since then, she's continued to write and record new music and she's looking forward to releasing it all. In a world that has seen so much darkness, it is her hope to create and share as much light as possible. We want to hear from you!
