Dr. Fritz talks with host Katy McGraw about her research on the relationship between backward walking velocity and falls, and the effects of cerebellar involvement on the motor and cognitive function in people with MS. Host Puja Agarwal PT, DPT, MHA is joined by Dr. Regan Harrell, PT, DPT, NCS, a current PhD student in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburg to discuss Vestibular Agnosia. Dr. Harrell’s research interests include the use of technology to improve the diagnosis and treatment of vestibular disorders and dizziness, and balance disorder manifestations in the traumatic brain injury population. Her recent work investigates the effect of Vestibular Agnosia on the reporting of BPPV symptoms in patients post TBI. In this episode, we talk with Dr. Catherine Lang and Dr. Carey Holleran from Washington University in St. Louis about their article scheduled for publication in the January 2023 issue of JNPT titled “Improvement in the Capacity for Activity Versus Improvement in Performance of Activity in Daily Life During Outpatient Rehabilitation.” Dr. Lang and Dr. Holleran discuss the difference between patients’ capacity in the clinic and their functional performance outside of the clinical setting. In this multi-site trial, they compared performance and capacity measures for patients with Parkinson disease and stroke, measuring upper limb and lower limb function. Host Dr. Jackie Loeshelle is joined by Dr. Evan Cohen and Dr. Mark Manago to discuss blood flow restriction training for patients with neurologic deficits. During the interview, Drs. Cohen and Manago discuss how blood flow restriction works physiologically and evidence on using this intervention for individuals with a variety of neurologic diagnoses. They discuss how fatigue is often a limiting factor of exercise (for both strengthening and aerobic training) with patient with neurologic conditions, and that the addition of blood flow restriction may allow patients to be able to work at a higher intensity when fatigue is a barrier.
