Episode 018: Hold Fast, Conrad Anker

Conrad Anker is one of the world’s most accomplished mountaineers. He made a name for himself in the 80s and 90s undertaking cutting edge first ascents with climbing partner Alex Lowe. There is much to be said about Conrad, but he is perhaps best known for his truly epic ascent of Meru with Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk. In 2016 Conrad suffered a heart attack whilst climbing with David Lama on Lunag Ri in Nepal. Tragically, David was killed on 16th April 2019 in an avalanche in the Canadian Rockies alongside Hansjorg Auer and Jess Roskelley. Jóhannus Kallsgard lives on Kalsoy, one of 18 islands in the North Atlantic that make up the Faroe Islands. Sheep farming in the Atlantic Ocean, where they have recorded windspeed of up to 280km/hr, is not without its challenges, but it does offer a peaceful existence.Matt was in the Faroe Islands working on a commercial shoot, when he met Jóhannus on a ferry. They got chatting and it transpired that not only was it his land that they’d like to film on but also that he’d be able to guide us if needed.
