Patrisse Cullors: How To Make It Out Alive
A Black Lives Matter co-founder who has dealt with everything—poverty, homophobia, a father and brother in and out of prison, and a police force the criminalized her as a child—Patrisse Cullors has dealt with all the pain, chaos and repression in her life and in response she has grown strong and wise and happy. She’s working on Black Lives Matter, she’s working on her family, and she’s now publishing a memoir that’s powerful, painful, beautiful, and heart-wrenching: When They Call You A Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir. It’s a great, great book that tells the story of her rise and the rise of Black Lives Matter. Cullors is a really special person and I’m glad to call her a friend and see what I can learn from her. Toure Show is a place where successful people talk about their journeys. What are the tactics, attitudes, and strategies that fueled their success? What can you learn from them that’ll help you on your rise? My hope is that these conversations are valuable for you. That you’ll hear something that’ll help you boost your life. Kehinde Wiley: How To Make It In Art
An art world superstar who’s full of brilliance and ego, and who’s willing to strip and be a nude model for his fellow artists, Kehinde Wiley is a portraitist who has become one of the dominant painters of his generation on an artistic level and on a business level. He’s got studios around the globe and many assistants and a vision for his work that is recognized and respected across the world. He’s been featured on the walls in Empire. He’s painted Michael Jackson and Kanye. He’s currently painting the official portrait of President Barack Obama for the National Portrait Gallery. In this intense conversation, he explores the development of his style of art and explains how he became a star and the challenges of setting up shop in a far-flung country—once in the Congo he and his team got thrown in jail for five days! Kehinde is a genius. Flat out. And he’s an extrovert. And it’s always fun to encounter that combination. There’s a lot here for people who want to be artists, people who love art, or people who have big dreams—Kehinde is all about all of that. Poker Pro David Williams: How To Make It In Poker
A poker star who’s won over $9 million at the table is definitely someone we all can learn from. The high pressure world of elite poker is stressful, thrilling, and complex but the trait Williams says is most important to being successful has nothing to do with the cards. He says the key is self-discipline. If you can control yourself, more importantly, if you can control your emotions then you can succeed in poker. Toure Show is successful people talking about their success. What are the tactics, attitudes, and strategies that fueled their success? What can you learn from them that’ll help you on your rise? My hope is that these conversations give you tactics that can help you. Dr. Meika: How To Make It In Medicine
My sister the ER Doc deals with immense pressure in a calm way. The hospital is chaotic but she can handle it even when it smells like charred human flesh. And climbing the corporate ladder can be like battling your way through a jungle. But she can handle that, too. They called her bossy but she did some work on herself and made changes and now she’s the Chief Medical Officer of the Hoboken University Hospital. I’m so proud of her. I had to talk to her for the show. Toure Show is successful people talking about their success. What are the tactics, attitudes, and strategies that fueled their success? How’d they deal with failure? What can you learn from their journey that’ll help fuel your rise? I want these conversations to be valuable for you. Puffy: How To Make A Billion
Toure Show is successful people talking about their success. What are the tactics, attitudes, and strategies that fueled their success? How’d they deal with failure? What can you learn from their journey that’ll help fuel your rise? I want these conversations to be valuable for you. Puff (or Sean Combs, or Diddy, or Brother Love) is one of the greatest business minds in the country today. He’s closing in on being a billionaire thanks to his many revenue streams—#1 Ciroc, #2 Sean John. He’s done it by being fearless in business, by being a creative visionary, by being a great marketer who understands how to infuse his brand into anything. Puff is indefatigable. He’s driven like no one you’ve ever seen. He’s great at inspiring people and setting a high bar for everyone around him. And he’s done it by using himself as billboard for his brand. He’s a star because it helps him sell. Yeah he’s got a huge ego but he uses his stardom strategically, to help himself sell so when the guy you saw dancing and rhyming alongside Biggie Smalls is now looking dapper and holding Ciroc, the vodka looks better. When he takes the audaciousness that he brought to the music biz and injects into the fashion biz, his clothes sell more. Being an icon helps him in business. And that’s just part of why he’s so successful. Nikki Giovanni: How To Make It In Poetry
Toure Show is successful people talking about the talents, tactics, and attitudes that helped them become successful. What’s at the core of your success? What’s your superpower? How did you rebound from failure? Hopefully these are conversations that are valuable to you and help you get more fuel for your journey. Nikki Giovanni is one of the greatest living poets in the world. I grew up hearing Ego Tripping recited over and over in ways that seemed to magically transform all who recited it and all who heard it. And so many of her other poems are so simple or so beautiful or so powerful that I can’t forget them. Plus Nikki is a joy to be around. She’s funny, smart, humble, and she’s cool. She’s the best dinner guest imaginable. In this hour plus conversation we talk about: • Her insight into Trump voters after a life lived in Appalachia. • The impact of watching domestic violence in her childhood home. • How she rebounded from a health scare by getting onstage. • What makes a great poem. • How she learned to cry. • Why she feels she needs to go into outer space. If you want to talk to me about this ep or suggest a future guest I’m on Twitter @Toure and on Instagram @Toureshow. And please rate and review on iTunes—it makes a difference! Maxwell: How To Make It In Music
Toure Show is all about exploring why awesome people became successful. Why did they make it? What are their superpowers? How did they deal with failure? I want to know so you can get a little more fuel for your journey to success. Maxwell is one of the great singers of his era and a man of towering fame and deep humility. He taught himself how to make music and constructed a debut album called Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite that blew everyone away. Ever since that album came out Maxwell has been a superstar. How does he handle being a star? How does he write music? What does he do in his multi-year breaks from the spotlight? We dig in to all of that and more. If you want to talk to me more about this I’m on Twitter @Toure. Toure Show is written by me, Toure and produced by Chris Colbert in association with Cadence 13 studios.
