Who Killed Malcolm X

Who Killed Malcolm X is a hot new Netflix doc that tells us who pulled the trigger of the sawed-off shotgun that killed Malcolm X, which Newark mosque he was from, how he got away, how the NYPD knew Malcolm’s life was in danger and allowed him to operate, and how the FBI sowed the seeds of angry division in the Nation of Islam that led to Malcolm’s murder. I talk with the directors Rachel Dretzin and Phil Bertelsen about making the film and how the American government conspired to kill Malcolm—his top bodyguard at the end was an NYPD infiltrator and informant. A person who didn’t help identify Malcolm’s killer—a man who lived out his life in peace in Newark. A person who went on to infiltrate the Black Panthers. I can’t. Karen Finney–I Worked For Hillary

Karen Finney worked for Hillary Clinton and witnessed the rise and fall from the front row. As the Dems search for a new nominee, Hillary’s shadow looms large, so I called Karen to have one more look at what went wrong for Hillary and what we misunderstand about her campaign and how 2016 changed politics as we know it. Amy Sherald—I Painted Michelle Obama

Amy Sherald painted the official portrait of Michelle Obama that’s hanging in the National Portrait Gallery but there’s an awesome story around how she got that commission and the artistic decisions she made in making that painting. We get into all of that but there’s also so much more to her life than that painting. Amy had already become a major portraitist before that commission, even though, just a few years before she met the Obamas, Amy was broke and wondering where her artistic career was going. She’s also got someone else’s heart inside of her thanks to a transplant that saved her life. She’s also a former rapper. And an all-around wonderful person. She’s an example of success coming to someone who believes in herself no matter what. Like what we do? Support us on Patreon patreon.com/toureshow and get Patreon exclusive eps every Friday. Marc Lamont Hill—I Grew Up With Kobe

Marc Lamont Hill grew up in Philly playing basketball with Kobe Bryant. They were on different planets even then but Marc learned a lot about him in the hundreds of times they faced off. They went in different paths but stayed friends and Marc became more than just one of the coolest intellectuals in America, he became a basketball expert who thinks of himself as Mr. 76ers. He sits front row at every home game. Marc is an amazing brother who I’ve known and loved for many years and it was amazing to sit and talk with him about basketball and Kobe and everything else. We had this conversation weeks ago, before Kobe was suddenly and tragically killed, and you can hear Marc’s respect for his old friend coming through. Like what we do? Franklin Leonard is one of people who are aiding the Black film revolution from behind the scenes. He’s a veteran film exec who knows the game inside and out. He created The Black List, an annual survey of un-produced screenplays that spotlights the best of them, creating opportunities for young screenwriters. 37 films have leapt from The Black List to win Oscars. Leonard has worked for Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sydney Pollack and more. He’s one of the people who have helped perpetuate an amazing moment in the history Black film and he understands the game, and how to tell great stories, as well as anyone. Harriet Tubman Came To Slay

Harriet Tubman is one of the inspiring figures in American history. For years she did the hard, dangerous, crucial work of running into the South and grabbing enslaved people off of plantations and bringing them to freedom through the Underground Railroad to the North—sometimes taking them as far as Canada. She risked her life and changed the lives of many, many families by rescuing people from slavery. In the recent movie about her, Harriet, I felt like crying during the montage where she walks in over and over with groups of people she’s saved. But if you think you know Tubman’s story because you’ve heard it, or because you saw the movie, just know that there’s much more to tell. Most accounts do not go into her later years, when she was a Union spy and when she led Union soldiers into a raid on a Confederate plantation where she ended up freeing over 700 people in one night. After seeing the film I wanted to hear the full story of Tubman’s life as we know it so I called the author of a great new book about Tubman called She Came To Slay by Rutgers University history professor Erica Armstrong Dunbar and she gave me much deeper insight on the real Tubman’s life including how she made it from the North to the South and back, what her life was like, what her friendship with Frederick Douglass was like, what her marriages were like, why we never see Tubman smile in photos, and more. Let me know what you think. Nikole Hannah Jones—I Live In A Slaveocracy

Nikole Hannah Jones is the creator of the amazing 1619 project for The NY Times which has made people smarter, made people cry and made some conservatives lose their minds. It seeks to explain how America is still impacted by the legacy of slavery. It is not past, we are, today, in a slaveocracy. The 1619 project is a podcast, an ongoing series of articles and essays that are being taught in schools, and will soon be a series of books. This builds on Nikole’s extraordinary work for the Times and her amazing pieces on school segregation for This American Life called The Problem We All Live With. She is a verified genius, the recipient of a MacArthur grant, and I could feel her genius as I spoke to her. She is a person who is toweringly influential in that her ideas have changed my thinking on many issues and, with the 1619 project, aims to shape the way many people see the relationship between America and slavery. It was an honor to have Nikole Hannah Jones @nhannahjones come to the studio and talk about her ideas and her work. I hope you get a lot out of this.
