How PETA Saved 4000 Dogs (with Alka Chandna)

On June 3, 2024, one of the largest dog research and breeding facilities, Envigo, was fined a record $22 million for violating federal animal welfare laws. As a result of the same proceeding, 4000 dogs were saved from life in a cage – or, worse, death at the hands of a vivisector in a lab. It’s been one of the biggest victories in animal rights history. But how did it happen? Dr. Alka Chandna, a Vice President of Lab Investigations at PETA, was crucial to the fight against Envigo, and she breaks down how the animal rights advocates won. It’s a story of brave undercover investigators; principled government officials (which is exceedingly rare); and, above all, a relentless campaign by tireless activists. But the lessons from this win apply far beyond one lab. And, as we get closer to a key hearing, I ask the question: What can we learn from the Envigo victory that will help us save, not just 4000 dogs, but them all? - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alkachandna/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/alka1963 XTwitter: https://x.com/alkac1 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alkachandna/ PETA: https://www.peta.org/RMD https://www.peta.org/investigations/ - The Simple Heart on Substack - Subscribe to Wayne Hsiung's newsletter to learn more about the #RightToRescue at https://simpleheart.org! - Chapters: Chapter 1 00:00-34:51 Intro, PETA, Envigo Dog Rescue Case, history of the company (Envigo/Covance) with monkey testing, investigations, & politics Chapter 2 34:52-1:08:29 The Envigo Dog Rescue Case continued, treatment of animals in labs, & people that test on animals Chapter 3 1:08:30-1:32:25 Human psychology, the myth of “necessary evils” from companies, the Envigo Dog Rescue Case investigation in 2021, & Envigo shutting down in 2022 Chapter 4 1:32:26-1:50:46 Settlement against Envigo in court for animals, systemic betrayal of the public & the animals, & fighting for justice Chapter 5 1:50:47-2:01:03 Final thoughts: advice for Ridglan Special Prosecutor Hearing, decreasing requirements of testing on animals, & seeing adopted rescued animals Chapter 6 2:01:04-2:01:20 Outro video - Thank you for watching!

How the Law Covers-Up Animal Cruelty (with Mariann Sullivan)

Most people believe our legal system protects animals from cruelty. And most people, in holding this belief, are wrong.  I speak to the renowned animal law scholar and attorney Mariann Sullivan on how the law has been used to cover up cruelty through a series of exemptions to animal cruelty law for “customary practices” in the industry. Essentially, if a factory farm commits an act of animal torture enough times – e.g., forcibly impregnating thousands of dairy cows, rather than just one –  it can then claim its actions are legal because they have become so common that they are “customary.” But there is a very simple path for advocates to overcome this insidious trick: point out that, even if common in the industry, acts of brutality are still not accepted by the public. To the contrary, what the public supports is animal rescue, not animal torture. Mariann and I have a deep conversation about the pros and cons of this approach. I’d love to hear what you think, too!  Follow Mariann on social media- FB: https://www.facebook.com/marisul IG: https://www.instagram.com/mariann_sullivan/ XTwitter: https://twitter.com/marisul LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mariann-sullivan-b3901411/ Our Hen House/The Animal Law Podcast- YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ourhenhouse Website: https://www.ourhenhouse.org/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/OurHenHouse IG: https://www.instagram.com/ourhenhouse/ XTwitter: https://twitter.com/ourhenhouse “Exes & Oh!s” Substack: https://exesandohs.substack.com/ - The Simple Heart on Substack - Subscribe to Wayne Hsiung's newsletter to learn more about the #RightToRescue at https://simpleheart.org! - Chapters: Chapter 1 00:00-21:35 Intro, jail, the legal system, legal standing for animals, legal exemptions for animal cruelty laws, Smithfield Trial arguments, Sonoma Trial appeal, & small county courts Chapter 2 21:36-35:31 Mariann’s journey into animal law and the animal rights movement, cognitive dissonance and compassion, & politicizing animal rights Chapter 3 35:32-58:44 Constitutional amendment for animal rights, Mariann’s journey continued, addictive food, vegan food, types of messaging, & jury trials Chapter 4 58:45-1:21:42 Mariann’s upcoming article, the theory of change, social media, & open rescue trials Chapter 5 1:21:43-1:47:05 Consumer protection laws, plant-based food labeling requirement lawsuits, politicians, Cass Sunstein & Ezra Klein, & animal cruelty laws & cases in different states Chapter 6 1:47:06-1:54:07 Final question: what inspires Mariann outside of the law, & follow her podcasts & on Substack (links above) Chapter 7 1:54:08- 1:54:23 Outro video - Thank you for watching!

To Hell and Back Again (with David Ramms)

Walking into a factory farm is like going through a dimensional portal into hell. But this conversation will show you something surprising about going to hell: it’s well worth the trip. David Ramms is one of the funniest, most intelligent activists out there. But he’s also one of the bravest. He has been inside factory farms across Europe, and what he’s learned is that there’s immense power in seeing firsthand what’s happening in the dark. We talk in this conversation about how we can get more people to have that experience – and develop vegan superpowers, of a sort. But this conversation goes in a thousand other directions, too. From the meaning of nonviolence to the dangers of infiltration, this was one of the most compelling conversations I’ve had. Let me know what you think! And make sure to follow David’s important work. Does the Dog Die? (with Jeremy Beckham)

Jeremy Beckham is the reason Julie the beagle is alive. Back in 2015, Jeremy told me about a secretive facility called Ridglan Farms that was producing thousands of beagles for experiments every year. Documents uncovered by Jeremy and other activists showed evidence of piles of burning animals, hundreds of dogs being subjected to painful procedures (including, we later learned, injections of rabies), and thousands confined in industrial warehouses at Ridglan. But despite complaints of dangerous and unsanitary conditions – including, apparently, by one of the company’s own employees – the state and federal government did nothing to protect the dogs. So we stepped in. In April 2017, I and a team of activists entered the facility through an unlocked door. We walked out with a blind beagle puppy we named Julie, who is alive (and sitting next to me as I write this) because of Jeremy’s tip. This is a dark conversation but an important one. We talk about not just the sordid history of experiments on dogs, beginning with radiation experiments performed in the 1950s, but the bizarre arguments offered by vivisectors to defend the abuse of dogs. But we also talk about reasons for, not just hope, but confidence that the torture will end. It turns out Americans do not like the idea of a dog dying. (Indeed, there’s an entire website, DoesTheDogDie.com, that warns people if a dog is killed in a movie because it’s too difficult for many people to deal with a dog dying, even in a fictional account!) On July 10, we’ll be making an argument to protect the Ridglan dogs in court. We are moving for a special prosecutor to be appointed to investigate cruelty at Ridglan Farms. It is an uphill battle, against one of the most powerful industries in the county. But this conversation helped me refine the arguments I plan to use. It will help you refine yours, too.  - Follow Jeremy and the Utah Animal Rights Center (UARC): XTwitter: https://twitter.com/JeremyBeckham  IG: https://www.instagram.com/j.s.beckham/  FB: https://www.facebook.com/slcvegan  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jsbeckham/  FB (UARC): https://www.facebook.com/utahanimalrights  XTwitter (UARC): https://twitter.com/UARC  IG (UARC): https://www.instagram.com/utahanimalrights/  LinkedIn (UARC): https://www.linkedin.com/company/utahanimalrights/about/ - The Simple Heart on Substack - Subscribe to Wayne Hsiung's newsletter to learn more about the #RightToRescue at https://simpleheart.org! - Chapters: Chapter 1 00:00-26:45 Intro, Beagle Freedom Project, history of animal testing, & psychological impacts  Chapter 2 26:46-43:37  Validity of research using animal testing, types of research, Wayne’s mom’s illness, & Jane Goodall/the moral argument Chapter 3 43:38-55:47  Dog research, Kristi Noem’s political controversy, & unacceptable treatment of dogs and other animals Chapter 4 55:49-1:12:31  Secrecy of the animal agriculture industry, the legal system, prosecutions of activists, & Costco egg supplier barn fire Chapter 5 1:12:32-1:24:59  Jeremy’s interest in researching and stopping vivisection, & the book Animal Liberation Chapter 6 1:25:00-1:40:08  Stopping cat experiments at the University of Wisconsin, James Cromwell, Ridglan Farms Trial Special Prosecution, & winning hopeless cases Chapter 7 1:40:09-1:45:59 Advice from Jeremy, Ridglan Rescue Trial/Ridglan Farms Trial Special Prosecution, when Jeremy becomes a lawyer, & final thoughts Chapter 8 1:46:00-1:46:16 Outro video - Thank you for watching!

Vegans Loving (Hating?) Vegans (with James Aspey)

In January 2014, James Aspey took a year-long vow of silence. For 365 days, James did not use his voice, in an effort to raise awareness to the suffering of animals. And when he finally spoke, his words had great power. He reached millions of people in his first interview for Australian television, then gave hundreds of talks across the globe (virtually all free of charge) to encourage people to take action to help animals.  But James, in many vegan circles, is now a villain. The reasons for this are complicated and, to be honest, often hard for me to ascertain. Some people condemn him for a crypto investment strategy he touted. Others criticize his increasingly aggressive language against non-vegans. But the James I know is far from a villain – or, really, a hero, either. He’s simply my friend. From the moment I met James outside of a massive North Carolina slaughterhouse many years ago, I saw something beautiful and kind in him. I still see that in him today, no matter what anyone else says.  There are lessons in James’ experience, and in our conversation, about how we can heal the divides in our world. For one, the intense vulnerability of this conversation, in which we both talk about our experiences with disordered eating, shows how candor builds trust. But the most important lesson is to lead with love rather than hate. I love James. I don’t think he’s perfect. (Neither am I, or anyone else I know.) But I know he’s a person deserving of love, as are all the sentient beings of this earth. If we start there, rather than with judgment or hate, there’s so much we can accomplish.  Follow James by going to @jimmycashpey on Instagram and Facebook and by @James_Aspey on YouTube.  - The Simple Heart on Substack - Subscribe to Wayne Hsiung's newsletter to learn more about the #RightToRescue at https://simpleheart.org! - Chapter 1 00:00-17:37 - Intro, Logan Paul podcast conversation, persuasion, & Lee Priest Chapter 2 17:38-34:45 - Shame, a diversity of voices in the movement, James becoming vegan, & being an activist Chapter 3 34:46-44:46 - James’s on his health issues (cancer & an eating disorder) & starting his one-year vow of silence Chapter 4 44:47-1:05:01 - Meditation, chronic pain, stress, & false rumors Chapter 5 1:05:02-1:13:20 - Betrayal, understanding hurt people, & healing from trauma Chapter 6 1:13:21-1:25:47 - Joy in the movement, criticism in the movement, develop your skills, & James’s activism as music Chapter 7 1:25:48-1:35:19 - Have fun while being an activist & growing your skills strengthens the movement Chapter 8 1:35:20-1:43:58 - Vegans have so much to offer, overcoming self-doubt, & being positive Chapter 9 1:43:59-2:07:22 - Fur banned in California, Chat GBT being weird, James on misinformation, James rapping for the animals, & outro

Am I a Scumbag? (with Vegan Gains)

Vegan Gains thinks I’m a scumbag. And I’m grateful. Richard Burgess, or Vegan Gains, is among the most important vegan influencers in history. His brand of fierce advocacy has generated a big following, with over 300k subscribers on YouTube. But while there is much to appreciate about Richard – he is wicked smart and has provocative, evidence-based views on everything from organic food (he’s against it) to carnivores in the wild (he thinks they should be exterminated) – the thing I love most about him is his honesty. In a world where everyone else is performing, Richard always says what he actually thinks. This includes his controversial take on vegan cats. If your cats aren’t vegan, he argues, you are a scumbag. A shockingly high percentage of the meat in this country is fed to companion animals. (Estimates range from 10-30%.) And Richard believes that feeding a cat non-vegan food – which I did for a period of time last year when Joan was sick and required (according to the vet) a prescription diet – is offering support to this violent industry. I don’t agree with Richard on many issues – including carnivores and cats – but I respect his intelligence and candor. And when I think back to my greatest failings as an activist and leader, they almost always relate to situations where I tried to “perform” - to say or do what people wanted me to say or do, rather than what I thought was right or true. It turns out, when you say what you think, as Richard and I both try to do in this conversation, you can still have respect for one another – and even be friends. This was one of my favorite conversations for that reason. Mobilizing a Movement (with Dan Kidby)

We live in an era of social movements. From #BlackLivesMatter to #FreePalestine, massive mobilizations of ordinary people have seized the national agenda – and reshaped policy of nations across the globe. How does it all happen? And can we do the same for animal rights? Dan Kidby is the co-founder of the UK-based Animal Rising, formerly Animal Rebellion, one of the most successful grassroots efforts in animal rights history. He and his fellow organizers have occupied massive meat markets, shut down the distribution network for McDonald’s, and saved 18 beagles from one of the largest dog research facilities in the nation in a daring daytime rescue. And they have done it on a shoestring budget, with a mostly volunteer network of activists. You’ll learn not only about the strategy that allowed Dan and his fellow activists to routinely make global headlines – and reshape the UK’s environmental movement in support of the fight against factory farms – but about his personal approach to creating change, including radical transparency in organizing. At a time where it seems so many of our institutions are failing, Animal Rising is… rising. And if they succeed, they’ll create a just and sustainable plant-based future for us all. What does it take to save a pig from a factory farm?  There are few people who understand this question better than Jenny McQueen, a Canadian activist who has been arrested, charged, and convicted for her nonviolent actions to help pigs in factory farms. But her story is not a sad one. To the contrary, Jenny has repeatedly and proudly risked her freedom, and garnered positive media attention in the process. What are the keys to her success? Is This An Atrocity? (with Jeremy Loeb)

Among the most important philosophers of our era – Peter Singer and Martha Nussbaum and Yuval Noah Hariri – animal agriculture is a historic atrocity. In both the scale and severity of suffering, there has never been an episode in history where so much evil has been inflicted, and so many. And yet even animal rights advocates rarely speak of what happens to animals in such terms. Why? I speak to Jeremy Loeb, formerly a journalist and radio host with NPR affiliates in North Carolina and Alabama, about this question. And the answer we come to is surprising: maybe, for us to speak or even believe what the moral philosophers tell us, we have to take action, first.
