AGL 277: The Art of Caring with Phillip Kane
About Phillip
In his day job, Phillip Kane is a husband, father, and caring leader. He has had a successful business career of more than 30 years in some of the world’s best-known corporations. Working for brands like Goodyear, Pirelli, Rothschild, and NAPA, Kane has had the privilege to lead thousands of individuals and has managed billions of dollars in value for stakeholders. Consistently recognized by the leaders of these organizations for excellence, Kane though credits any personal success to those he has led and who have made each win possible.
Born in Detroit, the grandson of an International Harvester (now Navistar) truck dealer, Kane has spent a lifetime in and around cars and trucks. An Eagle Scout, Kane has been serving others since he was a young boy. Crediting his father and a Nigerian priest with almost every good thing he has learned about life, leadership, business and the art of storytelling, Kane uses stories each Friday to help business associates relate to key issues facing the organizations he has the privilege to lead. These weekly letters have less to do with what is going on in the business than how people think about what is going on in the business. Kane has been recognized twice by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, authors of The Leadership Challenge, for the impact of his storytelling on teams. By helping shift and align his teams’ point of view, Kane and the teams he leads are able to accomplish more and win more often. Much because of the stories he tells. Many of them are assembled in one place for the first time – in his book, The Not So Subtle Art of Caring.

AGL 276: Chris Kolenda on Leadership, The Warrior’s Art
About Chris
Christopher D. Kolenda, Founder of the Strategic Leaders Academy, helps consultants, experts, and owners grow a meaningful, joyful, and profitable business. You get these outcomes by leading as your best self, Building an Inspiring Culture (TM), and making the pivotal decisions that create sustainable success.
Chris is both warrior and diplomat, combining assertiveness and statesmanship to gain dramatic wins. A West Point graduate, internationally renowned combat leader, and retired Army colonel, he defied conventional wisdom in Afghanistan by developing an innovative strategy that motivated a large insurgent group to switch sides, the only example of such success in the 20-year history of the war.
Unsatisfied with the complacency, Chris inspired change in the military’s strategy and got Pentagon officials on board to push for new diplomatic initiatives. As a trusted adviser to three 4-star generals and two Secretaries of Defense, Chris became the first American to have both fought the Taliban as a commander in combat and negotiated with them in peace talks.
After resigning from the government, he’s brought warrior-diplomacy to the private sector, helping business leaders challenge conventional wisdom, imagine the future, and implement innovations that soar their businesses to new heights. Alan Weiss has selected Chris for his consulting Hall of Fame.
His unique warrior-diplomacy has been featured in the New York Times bestselling books: The Outpost by Jake Tapper and Stones into Schools by Greg Mortenson, as well as Steve Coll’s Directorate S and several others. His contributions have also been cited in journals and newspapers such as the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, The Economist, and The London Times.
His books include Leadership: The Warrior’s Art, which has sold over 50,000 copies. The Counterinsurgency Challenge, and Zero-Sum Victory: What We’re Getting Wrong About War.

Private Internet Access
I’ve been a customer of Private Internet Access for over 3 years now and I love this service. I was at a security conference a few years ago and I connected to the hotel wifi. Immediately my endpoint protection software began to alert me of hacking attempts. I launched my VPN from Private Internet Access and all of the attempts were stopped. My data and internet connection was secure. Another great use of the VPN service is connect from different geo locations, which is very helpful when testing DNS and CDN caching. AGL 268: Douwe Maan
About Douwe
Douwe Maan is the Founder and CEO of Meltano, an open source platform for the complete DataOps lifecycle.
Spun out of GitLab In early 2021, Douwe took charge at Meltano and went on to raise $4.2M in Seed funding led by GV.
Douwe became a successful developer at a young age, Co-Founding his first company at age 18. He would be happy to speak about DevOps, DataOps, open source data and just about anything else he has experienced along the way to success in such a booming industry.
Born and raised in the Netherlands, Douwe was introduced to computers early by his father, and picked up programming at the age of nine.
Throughout high school, Douwe worked as a freelance software developer, building many websites, an iPhone jailbreak tweak with 300k downloads, the #1 (closed) most downloaded watchface for the original Pebble smartwatch, and two iPhone apps that got featured on the App Store.
While studying at Utrecht University, Douwe co-founded a SaaS startup that grew to $150k in ARR, which led to him joining GitLab in 2015 as employee number 10 after landing the parents of its co-founder and CEO Sid Sijbrandij as customers.
Soon after, he hired and trained GitLab’s next 10 engineers and became its first development lead and engineering manager.
After graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Douwe spent six months traveling the world, visiting and working with 49 colleagues in 14 countries on 5 continents.
In late 2019, Douwe joined the internal Meltano project at GitLab as Engineering Lead to bring his experience building open source developer tools to the data space.
Soon after, he was asked to take over as General Manager, and quickly pivoted to focus on open source data integration, which led to Meltano picking up significant traction during 2020.
Douwe currently lives in Mexico City with his delightful wife, who he met on the aforementioned trip around the world, and their two cats.
