Color Analysis with Stylist Abby Young | EP 172

In Episode 172 of the Fashion Crimes Podcast, host Holly Katz and special guest Abby Young dive deep into the world of fashion, style, and color analysis. Abby is a personal commercial and fashion wardrobe stylist hailing from the sunny shores of California. Together they explore the significance of color analysis in fashion! LISTEN HERE! KEY TAKEAWAYS: Fashion Styling and Self-Image Transformation Abby shares her remarkable journey from being an eighth-grade teacher (UM WHAAT) to transitioning into the world of fashion styling. She attributes her passion for fashion and her love for teaching as the driving forces behind this transformative career change. Abby also highlights her move from the chill vibes of Minnesota to the vibrant fashion scene of California, appreciating the state's relaxed, bohemian atmosphere. Holly and Abby then take a deep dive into the importance of style and self-expression, especially for mothers who might feel they've lost their fashion mojo after having children. Abby's personal journey may resonate with many listeners who have considered reinventing themselves through fashion. Color Analysis and Personalized Styling As personal stylists, Holly and Abby discuss the art of guiding clients through a personalized style journey. Holly emphasizes the importance of analyzing a client's silhouette and body type, enabling a strong foundation for personalized shopping with elite clients. Abby explains how the aging process can impact color choices, with colors generally remaining consistent every 10 years due to changes in pigmentation of one's complexion. Abby underscores that high-level executives and entrepreneurs should invest in color testing to optimize their appearance and how they're perceived by their audience. She employs various techniques to determine a client's undertones, examining their skin tone across all four seasons and evaluating the contrast between their skin and the colors they wear. Color Analysis and Fashion Advice Holly and Abby explore the intricacies of color analysis, emphasizing that it goes beyond personal preference. Understanding how colors interact with different skin tones is crucial. They urge listeners to seek out trained professionals for in-person color analysis, as digital tests can be unreliable. Color Analysis and The Personalized Styling Process Holly asks about the specifics of Abby's color analysis testing process, including duration and cost. Abby explains that her process typically takes around 30-45 minutes, with clients receiving their reports within one to two weeks. Clients can choose to work with Abby for clothing, makeup, or both. She also provides insights on selecting makeup colors that complement one's skin tone and facial structure. Abby's Mantra: "At the end of the day - or when in doubt on what to wear - wear something that brings you confidence, whether you are sure or not that it looks good, or it's the right color. Wear something that you feel confident in when you leave the house - because mentally - you'll feel more confident, and people will see that." And that's the short story on this week's episode. Designer Spotlight: Jenette Bras | EP 168

We are SO EXCITED to introduce our Very Special Guest this week - The Master of Bra-Fitting - Jenette Goldstein of Jenette Bras. Jenette is a former award-winning actor (Aliens) and founder of Jenette Bras, a bra-fitting boutique specializing in sizes D-K, with locations in L.A. and Atlanta. Her tagline: "The alphabet starts at "D"." As we all know - this is Holly's favorite subject. But for a twist, Holly is the one learning new lessons - and her MIND WAS BLOWN after a session with Jenette at her boutique in Atlanta. Join us this week as Jenette shares her amazing story of how she went from Hollywood movie sets to creating a niche business from scratch - with no business experience - and has found great create success by serving woman in a category that has mostly been ignored. LISTEN TO EPISODE 169 here! ABOUT JENETTE: Jenette Goldstein is the co-founder and CEO of Jenette Bras, the nation's premier bra-fitting boutique for full-busted women. The company was founded in East Hollywood in 2009 and has grown to include four shops in Southern California and two in Atlanta. She is also known for starring as Private Vasquez in the sci-fi horror film Aliens (1986), which won her the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. But what are here this week to celebrate her journey from successful actress to female entrepreneur – and the mountains she has climbed in-between. HOW IT STARTED: For Jenette, this whole story may have started at age 12, when she visited the local "bra lady" with her mother, near a kosher butcher. This was mortifying, but her visits to mall stores were even worse. The fits were abysmal; either the cups were too small, or the band slipped down to her waist. The problem continued plaguing her throughout her life. With a 32 G bra size, describing herself as "small framed" yet "busty," she grew increasingly frustrated. But then, purely by divine intervention, she was in London and found a store servicing "girls that have a small ribcage and a fuller bust." This experience literally changed her life, because this type of service and women's undergarments in untypical sizes did not exist in the United States. Fastforward to somewhere around the time in her 40s, when she found acting jobs becoming scarce, because Hollywood sucks for women. So, with no business experience, she and her artist husband decided to fill the missing gap in women's bra sizes and options by opening their first Jenette Bras boutique in LA. She has since gone from launching a new career, a new company, expanding her brick-and-mortar stores, weathering the shutdown of COVID in the retail sector - and defying ageism – to become THE EXPERT in women's foundation wear. HOW TO BUY A BRA THAT FITS: The Importance of Bra Comfort & Self-Acceptance A bra is the most technical piece of clothing to produce. You can compare it to a men's tailored suit and or a finely made pair of shoes. A bra must do the work. For instance, a skirt doesn't have to lift you, it can just look beautiful. The arch of a shoe must do the work: if it does support your arch, your whole body is affected. The job of a bra is incredibly complicated. It must give comfort, support, and create a beautiful profile. Therefore, the research and development of making this item of clothing is intense. "The price is not luxury pricing, it's quality pricing." A bra is intimate. It is a beautiful piece of clothing. It's what you put on the first thing in the morning, and it should make you feel beautiful (as well as fit well, be comfortable and create a gorgeous silhouette). That is your secret power. This is your blueprint for getting dressed. This is the foundation of building a great outfit. Creating an outfit and feeling beautiful takes practice. And you really must start with the undergarments that support your body and give you the confidence that you need to feel fabulous in your clothes. Everyone has what they call "problem areas," or parts of the body they are self-conscious about. But this should not bring shame or embarrassment. You have the power to reshape or support those areas so that you have the kind of confidence that makes you shine from within. Confidence is key. Holly and Jenette discuss their favorite undergarment brands, the benefits of a professional bra-fitting, and how bras are constructed so you can become an educated consumer! We had SO MUCH FUN meeting Jenette, and we are grateful for the wealth of knowledge she has imparted on us this week! 10 Things That Are Fabulous about 50 | EP 167

Welcome to this special episode of the FASHION CRIMES PODCAST, where we celebrate the timeless allure of wisdom and the incredible journey of all women when they finally become "of a certain age." Your favorite personal stylist, and hostess with the mostest - HOLLY KATZ - celebrated the BIG 5-0 this week! #DAMN HOW IT STARTED: How was it turning 50? She did it! And she lived through it! And, yes, it was a fabulous, fabulosu day! But she woke up feeling like, in order to get a handle on her second half, she needed to have some clear well-being goals that were going to give her new thought patterns moving forward. #sowise Now that she is older and wiser, (right?) she decided that she wanted to shed some of the old self-limiting beliefs and create some new uplifting, self-loving beliefs. This year, like many of us, had some major growing pains. So, with a new therapist, and an optimistic outlook, we thought it would be perfect for us to reflect on 10 Things That are Fabulous about Being 50 (or turning 50, or half-way through your 50s, etc.) HOLLY'S 10 THINGS THAT ARE FABULOUS ABOUT 50 10: You're wearing the right bra. At this point in your life, your bra is the right size. There's no more guessing or wondering what your size is, you have the right bra which makes your clothes look better and fall correctly on your body. The bra-fitting experience is not only life changing, but also better for your posture and corrects any back issues that you may have. 9: You get to choose your own friends. Yes, you do. You now have the guts to remove people in your life that are no longer serving you. Think of this: after the last time someone takes advantage of you, or hurts your feelings, or takes you for granted - you need to be over it. Some people are in your life for a reason, some for a season, some for a lifetime. 8: You dress according to your body type. At this point, you are well aware of which clothes elevate your mood and make you happy. You are body-aware and love to wear clothes that flatter your figure and your shape, which means you have correctly identified your body type. This means you know what cuts and silhouettes look best on you. Which means you only shop according to your body type, you do not shop for color, and you do not shop for price. 7: You've not afraid to say NO. Or, at least you are getting better at saying no. Most of us do not want to disappoint people - and we may even bend over backwards to not make people upset. We'd rather rearrange our schedule, just to avoid saying "no." Is this you? Well, not anymore, Sister. 6: You continue to elevate your style as you age. By now, you know your body type and you enjoy shopping because you know what looks best on you. You're also not afraid to try new things that might be a little out of your comfort zone. You are wearing 'elevated basics' at home, which means you won't embarrass yourself if the delivery guy rings your doorbell and he needs a signature. 5: You have self-care time each week. If you are a person that doesn't have control of their own schedule, chauffeurs kids in the car all day, is responsible for several people's well-being, and/or taking care of a loved one or sick person – you need self-care time. If you're working over 40 hours a week, or if you're lucky just to eat lunch during the day or have time to pee in between meetings - this one is for you. Listen up for the rest of the list on the FASHION CRIMES PODCAST, where we celebrate the timeless allure of wisdom and the incredible journey of all women when they finally start their fabulous 50's! HOW ITS GOING: It's going great, because we are in our 50s now, and we just don't have so much baggage anymore. (And, you bought a copy of Holly's new book for yourself, and all your girlfriends, so now you have all the answers.) JOIN THE BOOK CLUB! Fabulous at 50: The Bra Fitting | EP 166

In honor of HOLLY'S FABULOUS 50th Birthday celebration, we will be celebrating TOP THINGS ABOUT TURNING 50 because there are ENDLESS reasons to celebrate (like, not being a teenager, for one). So, hang with us while we learn all the reasons why hitting this milestone is, frankly, a gift from God. In this episode we meet Monica and Niki, who are fabulous new styling clients of Holly's from the Chicagoland area, and now, our new FASHION BESTIES! Holly makes the trip to Napierville outside of Chicago to meet this lovely couple who are working with Holly for styling help and a major closet clean out. Usually when Holly helps someone with a closet-cleanout, there is anxiety and tears and probably more tears. It can be an emotional and difficult process to begin parsing one's lifelong collection of stuff in a closet. HOWEVER, not the case with Niki. It's like she already knew she was holding onto excess baggage, and boy, was she ready to let go. #goteam Perhaps she was holding onto her old life, and realized her new life was better, so this process may have already been started by the other changes she has made in her life. Of course, as any couple living in the same space, some of Niki's clothes were intertwined with Monica's – and thus started the double closet clean out and style therapy! Niki and Monica were so gracious about opening their life, their closets and even airing some dirty laundry along the way. (literally and figuratively). We are grateful for their frank and honest conversation about how their style and habits can be changed to make their life better – and you have a front row seat! From subpar storage and laundry habits to a successful shopping spree, here are some of the things we learned along the way: FABULOUS FACTS ABOUT TURNING FIFTY: Number One on the list of Fabulous Things About Turning 50: letting go of things that bother you. You cannot be bothered after 50. It is the most freeing and luxurious thing EVER. Number Two: It is a FASHION CRIME to think that no matter where you are in your life, you don't deserve nice things. We didn't say EXPENSIVE things. We said NICE things. #Period. Number Three: By holding on to the old things in your closet, you are not able to find room for the new. Maybe your body shape changed. Maybe your mindset changed. Where are you going to find room for the new, if your closest is stuffed with the old? Thank you, Monica, for those fashion words of wisdom. We will be putting that on a throw pillow. "I'm a new person. I just had a birthday. Let's rock and roll! Let's show the world you know who I am and make me feel more confident in my new style and who I am now!" - Monica Number Four: This probably Number One, but if you have not been to a proper bra-fitting by 50, you need to go. The foundation of great style is proper undergarments. Holly takes both Niki and Monica to a professional bra-fitting and the results are astounding. They are here to tell you it was LIFE CHANGING. #mikedrop "All right, well, first of all, I always knew bra fitting exists. But I thought it was more of a wealthy thing. Or, I felt it was this magical land or, you know, I always thought it was one of those things where it's like, man, someone's gonna see my boobies? Can I really do this? – Monica SHOUT OUT: Holly took Monica and Niki to Bare Moxie in Geneva, IL. Please share the love for this amazing small business – they are so spectacular! Number Five: When you look good, you feel good! Niki's shopping spree and trip to a makeup counter netted her new outfits and a new look that FIT HER WELL, were perfect for her lifestyle and elevated her style just a bit out of her comfort zone. The end result? Endless compliments and comments. Which leads to new confidence. Which leads to feeling amazing. Which leads to, why didn't I do this before? "I think everybody around me is inspired to kind of 'level up' in the same in the same way that I'm doing right now. It's been a super cool experience." – Niki Number Six: When you do the work and you show up looking and feeling confident, people notice because of your ENERGY shift is different. Your confidence and happiness are next level. Number Seven: After 50, you no longer need to put everyone else first. Women put EVERYONE first and ahead of their own feelings and actions. You can stop doing that. Now. So maybe this episode is about more than just bra-fitting. But if you are celebrating a big birthday soon and looking for ways to embrace that process - and find a fabulous rainbow in the cloud of getting older – just stop long enough to listen to Monica and Niki. They embraced new thinking and new things in general. Now they are unstoppable. #FACTS It is this ability to CHANGE YOUR MINDSET that makes turning 50, or being over 50, so fabulous. More Fabulous Fifty things to come, but in the meantime, we cannot thank Monica and Niki enough for their courage and their honesty – and we can't wait until we can bring them back to talk to them on another episode! Color Analysis Trend: Yay or Nay? | EP 165

Is the 1980s "color analysis trend" coming back? Is "digital" image consulting now a thing, along with double breasted suits, giant shoulder pads and terrible perms? It's certainly starting to look that way, as your favorite personal stylist Holly Katz is finding that digital color and style analysis is all the rage right now, and the hottest thing on Tik Tok. This week, we discuss the popularity of the 1980s book, Color Be Beautiful, and how a new wave of Ai and digital styling tools are bringing back color analysis. We also pick apart styling in a box and other online style apps that may - or MAY NOT - be helpful in creating your own personal style. (NOTE: follow along on Holly's Pinterest board for this episode!) In general, this iconic bestselling style guide explained that there are 4 types of color palettes, named after the 4 seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. In her book, Carole Jackson asked, "What Season Are You?" Your choices where: Spring: Your colors are clear, delicate, or bright with yellow undertones. Summer: Cool, soft colors with blue undertones are right for you. Autumn: You look best in stronger colors with orange and gold undertones. Winter: Clear, vivid, or icy colors with blue undertones make you look best. The promise of this concept was to help you define your color personality, learn to perfect your makeup, use color to solve body-shape issues, save money by developing a color-coordinated wardrobe for all occasion, and discover your clothing personality. #thatscute Wow. If this was truly the magic bullet for style success, some of us might not have a job as a personal stylist today! So, is it that this national phenomenon just faded away over the past 30 years? Was the concept wrong? Or did we just get lazier with the rise of the punk rock movement and the rise of fast fashion? In this episode, Holly takes you through her experience as she tries out a "Color Analysis" app on her phone. Her commentary, as she takes you step-by-step through the app's style questionnaire proves to be both hilarious and frustrating. She tried to be open minded. She tried. If you know Holly, she has a point of view on these questions – and especially – the results! In essence, the color you wear cannot be the easy answer to your style questions and concerns. Can certain colors make you feel better when you wear them? Absolutely! Are there some colors that are not good with your skin tone? Double Yes! Should you plan your life around being a 'warm' or 'cool' Autumn? Hell no! Why? Because, Fashion Besties, we do not shop for color. We shop for fit. This is our mantra, and you need to have that engraved on your brain. The other reason is that you can't slap a band-aid on your style and expect miracles. When you do the work and know what works for your body type, then you have the freedom to pick the styles that fit you best, then choose the colors of your choice. Even before the pajama pant trend of the Covid era, the accepted work dress code and style has consistently gotten more and more casual. Do we like that? #EWNO Can we work around that? Well, some of us can. (Wait until you get the part in this episode about the recent dress code change in the U.S. Senate. There is a long discussion about hoodies and basketball shorts you need to hear!) If you go back to Holly's foundational philosophy of "How to Stop Making These Fashion Mistakes," you will remember these key things: Shop for your body shape. Dress your age. Wear the correct undergarments. Clean out your closet chaos. If you start buying clothes online by searching for "teal blue" then you have missed the message. Can you wear teal blue? Of course you can! (As long as it fits well and is age appropriate – and is not the only color you ever wear.) Do not let subscription style boxes or online apps that charge you money lull you into fashion security. Artificial intelligence and robot warehouse packers cannot determine your style. You have to do the work. You still need your brain, and with the constant support of this podcast, you can dooooo iiiiit! Don't give up. Just because "Casual Friday" has become "Casual Everyday" doesn't mean you don't need to get out of your style comfort zone. In fact, we applaud you for trying these apps and subscription services, because it means you care. Don't let digital trends – or any trend – on TikTok or elsewhere dictate what to wear. We are old enough to know better. Do let Holly help you navigate your way to style success. She makes it easy, and very fun! Amirite? This is what chic people do. #justsayin IN OTHER NEWS: In case you missed the WORLDWIDE RELEASE PARTY for Holly's new book…. They pride themselves on the fact that their bags are handwoven by villagers who are paid a fair wage and have created a fund to help provide community support for these artisans. The fund provides educational subsidies for the children and families that weave their bags. BACKGROUND: This company was started over 7 years ago and is a family- and women-run organization. Pam, the founder, grew up in both Thailand and the U.S. and loves sharing her culture and love for gorgeous bags. Thailand is known for its kind people and excellent artisans. In Thailand, the centuries-old craft of basket weaving has been handed down from one generation to the next. Pam has created a sustainable brand that prevents agricultural pollution by creating products made with "seagrass," also knows at the tropical "Water Hyacinth" plant. Thailand, nicknamed the "Land of Smiles," is home to many skilled artisans crafting locally made and sustainable products. Basket weaving is an ancient art passed down from generation to generation. Seagrass, an underwater flowering plant, grows wild all along the shores. It provides a safe habitat for fish and prawns and is the primary food source for turtles. Dead seagrass washes up on the beach, and Thai weavers collect the offerings. Seagrass, while natural, can clog up roads and sewers, becoming a nuisance for people. But when it's dried and weaved into magical creations (from baskets to bags), it becomes unique to that village community, referred to as "one tambon one product" (OTOP). The process of creating bags takes several days from start to finish. Once the seagrass has been harvested and dried, every single product is hand-woven. This is not fast fashion, but instead, high-quality, sustainable, durable, functional, and beautiful art. The final product is more than just a "bag." The founder, Pam, believes in offering signature handbags and accessories that "elevates lives and closets." We LOVE this! GIVING BACK: At Sea & Grass, they believe in the power of education and want to help disadvantaged children dream. With this mission in mind, they created the Areeya Scholarship Fund. A portion of the profits of every bag sold helps pay the costs of tuition, books, transportation, and other necessities for disadvantaged Thai children. The majority of the fund goes to the children of the same weavers who create Sea & Grass bags. In addition to paying a fair wage, they further their economic power by helping them afford school for their children, nieces, and nephews. They see the process as a beautiful cycle of entrepreneurship and generosity.
