Rendering Unconscious welcomes Joseph Robicheaux to the podcast! On this episode, he presents his lecture from the first Psychoanalysis, Art & the Occult conference, London, 2016, “The Seven Souls: The Seven Layers of the Vodou Soul” Joseph Robicheaux is Oungan, Diviner, Author, Singer, Historian, Artist, Poet. He has dedicated his life to the study of the occult, spirituality and religion of Traditional societies in the ancient and modern world, having studied many forms of traditional belief. From his own upbringing, and later initiation into Haitian Vodou, Robicheaux comes from a multicultural background, offering a worldview shaped by his immersion into often misunderstood and vilified cultures. Robicheaux seeks to present the underrepresented “occult” in an understandable and edifying way. Ami Sands Brodoff is the award-winning author of three novels and two volumes of stories. The Sleep of Apples, her new story collection centres on nine closely-linked characters who confront crises related to mental illness, mortality, and gender identity. Ami’s novel, In Many Waters, focuses on three orphans whose lives intersect on the island of Malta, and grapples with our current refugee crisis. The White Space Between won The Canadian Jewish Book Award for Fiction (The Vine Award), and is the story of a mother and daughter struggling with the impact of the Holocaust. Bloodknots, a volume of thematically linked stories about marginalized families on the edge, dramatizes the threads that bind people together and the ones that unravel without warning. Bloodknots was a finalist for The Re-Lit Award. Her debut novel, Can You See Me?penetrates into both the point-of-view of a young man with schizophrenia and the sister who struggles to help him. Dancing with Salomé unmasks the occult aspects of Oscar Wilde’s celebrated tome The Picture of Dorian Gray, whilst exploring how the unseen manifested not just in the famous author’s life but in that of his love interest, Lord Alfred Douglas. Through a series of interlinking essays, Nina Antonia takes us to meet the Decadent demi-monde of the 1890’s with whom Wilde and Douglas mingled. Whilst eroticism and mysticism were key themes of the Decadents, there was also a surge of interest in ritual magic, enabled by the flowering of the “Golden Dawn.” Wilde’s wife, Constance, was a member, as was W.B. Yeats, alongside Aleister Crowley.
