120 | Peer Support: A Radical Paradigm with Age-Old Roots - A conversation with Dawn Cohoe and Selena Rowan
Listen in with Selena Rowan as she interviews herbalist and peer support specialist Dawn Cohoe of Maple Twig Medicinals. They cover wide ranging ground exploring the concept of Peer Support, a non-hierarchical practice of giving and receiving help, most commonly applied to mental health and addictions recovery but with wide ranging applications, including herbal medicine. Peer support is based on a philosophy of respect, shared responsibility, and mutual agreement on what is helpful, with its goal to promote holistic healing and growth in the context of community. Dawn and Selena touch in on the radical origins of the modern peer support movement in relationship to the mental health system and mental health recovery, personal stories relating to peer support, and breaking down the false dichotomy between "those who know" and "those who don't". Dawn reminds us that when working in any helping profession, whether that be when supporting those in mental health recovery or in any other situation, we as practitioners "need more vulnerability and less fragility." To learn more, connect with Dawn at www.mapletwigmedicinals.com and Selena at ninesistersbotanicals.com and follow their pages on Facebook! (Content warning: This discussion makes brief mention of suicidal thoughts. If you or a loved one are experiencing distress, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline is available 24/7 to provide support at 1-800-273-8255. ) Thanks for listening! 116 | Herbalist Interview: Hope Najjar with Selena Rowan
Meet Hope Najjar - a born and raised Californian with Chicana and Lebanese roots with incredible energy and clear vision. Hope is opening Night Hawk Art and Healing Collective in our tiny town of Laytonville, part of the Eel River watershed in rural inland Mendocino County of far northern California. The Night Hawk Collective has goals as lofty as its name sake, and hopes to serve as a community hub, empowering the community through sharing traditional methods of healing and promoting self-care. This community is on a precipice after over 5 years of historic drought and water crises, concurrent with historic fires (including the Mendocino Complex, the largest fire in California history), ecological fracturing, threatened extinction of our local salmon and collapse of local fisheries, and severe and sudden economic decline due to the third economic boom and bust cycle in the region's history of extractive industries (in the past few decades we've experienced the collapse of the logging, fisheries, and cannabis production industries). Amidst all this, Hope is part of a generation of young folk here working hard to cultivate a community resilient enough to survive the current and future changes we face. So listen with herbalist Selena Rowan of Nine Sisters Botanicals, and join the movement for sustainable, enthusiastic, loving, creative culture and community as we traverse through the unknown and unpredictable experience that is our current time.
