Ep. 23 Live on IG - Extinguish Reactivity & Crating as a Non- Negotiable
Apologies for the audio, this was recording live on Instagram outside!
In this episode, we dive deep into extinguishing reactivity in dogsâspecifically addressing the steps I take with owners and why Iâve shifted my approach over the years. Reactivity is much like addiction, where the behavior becomes highly reinforcing for the dog, making it harder to break the habit. I discuss why creating a "detox phase" is essential for reactive dogs, and how physical management, like crate training, can help stop the rehearsal of impulsive behaviors.
We'll cover:
Why reactivity is like addiction for dogs
The importance of physical management in the early stages of training
My shift from a hands-off to a more structured approach with crates
The mistakes Iâve seen when clients avoid crate training and how it prolongs the behavior
How to avoid allowing your dog to practice undesirable behaviors when you're not home
If youâre struggling with a reactive dog, this episode will give you actionable steps to create long-term change, with minimal management needed down the road. Letâs get into it!

Forgive the rough audio in this!
I know many in my audience can relate to Tina's story with Cosmo. You adopted a dog in the hopes that you'd be able to enjoy that dog, not necessarily work through a behavior modification plan and reactivity.

Ep. 15 What dog training method is the best for your dog?
There are endless blog posts that do their best to persuade owners, dog lovers and even dog trainers that there is one methodology and approach to training. I wish it were that simple but unfortunately, it's not. Dog training isn't as binary as some might attempt to make it. It's not Positive Only Vs. Alpha theory. Dog training is a spectrum and should be tailored to dog, owner, environment and life style. That's the great thing about training and behavior modification for your dog, you have almost endless ways of teaching them behaviors you do want and limiting the behaviors you don't.
