Robin says @ 00:22:11 He frequently gets side-stitches and abdominal cramps when he is running and is wondering what could be causing them and how he can avoid them. He also would like to know how to develop mental strength - the ability to push through when things get tough. Adam says @ 00:34:59 He finds that when he is doing a lactate session, of 10k or more, he starts off tough through the middle of the run but then he starts to get negative thoughts and question himself before coming out the other side and finish off the session really well. He's looking for advice about the middle section and how to become mentally tougher and take out the negative thoughts. Craig says @ 00:45:33 Wonders if you have any tips for healing road rash, skin abrasions and/or cuts. ~ In my response to Craig, I mention: Emu oil, Helichrysum essential oil organic, Manuka honey, Liquid bandage. Dave says @ 00:50:44 Is currently training for a marathon but will then start training for an Ironman. He is planning to use your 9 month training protocol but he's noticed that you recommend a lot of meat and he is vegan. Is there scope for vegans in there? He can't be the first to ask (especially after your appearance on Rich Roll's podcast). ~ In my response I mention TriathlonDominator.com or Tri-Ripped.com and Chris says @ 01:07:45 He had his gallbladder removed about 10 years ago (he is 47 years old now) and is wondering if there are any tweaks or considerations he needs to make in his diet or any supplements he should be taking due to his lack of gallbladder. He works out about 5 days a week and does struggle to keep his weight down. ~ In my response to Chris, I recommend Bitters and Bile salts. Thomas says @ 01:14:00 He's looking for advice on how to control motion sickness. It happens in the car when someone else is driving but the biggest problem is when he swims. Looking for advice or pointers on how to get over motion sickness in water. He can swim fine but he gets a "really swelly head" and then throws-up. In the ocean but also in the pool. ~ In my response to Thomas I mention practice snorkel swimming, I recommend wax earplugs, and acupressure wrist band. Audio Question from Dwight @ 00:24:14 He is a shift worker who works alternating days and nights - 3 on and 3 off. He finds it hard to get into a routine at the gym or with regular meals. Can Ben offer some workout routines for coming off nights and on to days and also any supplements that might help with the transitions back and forth. ~ My recommendations to Dwight: Home or Office "light" workout gear -GymStick -FIT10 -MostFit Suspension Strap -Perfirmer Sleep (Supplements) -400-500mg potassium citrate combined with 400-500mg Natural Calm magnesium (30-60 minutes prior to bed) -MillenniumSports Somnidren GH (use on empty stomach, 30-60 minutes prior to bed) -Hammer REM caps (use 15% referral code 80244) Sleep (Testing/Tracking) -Zeo Personal Sleep Coach system -More affordable alternative to Zeo: SleepTime app by Azumio Sleep (Tools) -Install “Flux” on computer so it dims at night -Wear blue light blocking glasses, especially for evening computer use. Recommend Gunnar. -Install low blue light bulbs, and put blue light blocker screen on computer -PZizz iPhone app for quick naps -Dream Essentials contoured face mask and fitted ear plugs -“The Delta Effect” CD’s/mp3 downloads -Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy for enhancing deep sleep cycles – recommend EarthPulse -NatureBright Sun Touch for morning light therapy -Sunrise Alarm Clock for waking Audio Question from Jenny @ 00:38:29 She has heard that reducing or eliminating dairy can help with asthma. Does this extend to goat and sheep milk or is it only cow. Should she also cut out whey protein (even the Mount Capra stuff) and eggs as well? ~ In my response to Jenny I mention the Metametrix Immunoglobulin test, LivingProtein (vegan protein source), and my goat's milk vs. cow's milk interview with Joe Stout from Mt. Capra. Audio Question from Jim @ 00:48:43 He is currently doing a lot of interval work, mostly 5 minute intervals and some 1 minute intervals based on the Jack Daniels system. His job is very physical (on his feet, lifting and pushing). What would you suggest he do to work on extending his ability to maintain a fast pace. ~ In the response to Jim, Ben mentions his book "Weight Training For Triathletes" and suggest supplementation with oxaloacetate. Audio Question from Mike @ 00:59:00 Is wondering about Hematocrit levels. His is usually between 39 and 40. He has heard that levels above 50 can be suspect for "doping". Is 40 low? What would it mean, performance wise, if his was 45? Is there a natural way to raise it? Would he want to? Anonymous asks @ 01:13:16 I am thinking of getting a vasectomy but I don't want to mess up my race season or my health. How long will I need to take off running and lifting after the procedure? I'm less concerned about cycling and swimming, but that is also a factor. The medical literature says "don't bathe or swim for 48 hours", "take it easy for 2 or 3 days", "limit your activity for 5 days" and also "strenuous exercise or lifting should be avoided for a total of 7 days". That doesn't sound too bad…. does it? Interview with Craig @ 01:22:44 To take a look at Craig's MyList, and set up your own, head to mylist.com/bengreenfield. Allison asks @ 00:33:31 She began taking TianChi after hearing about it on the podcast in October of 2012 and took it pretty consistently until about the beginning of January 2013. After coming off it she has experienced unreal hormonal swings, PMS that is amplified, and two full periods this month separated by only a week. She's wondering if something in the adaptogenic herbs may have caused her hormones to go haywire when I stopped taking them. She is currently trying to get pregnant so this weirdness is kind of putting a kink in the works. She's been to an ob/gyn and had a pelvic exam and other tests and found nothing. ~ In my response, I refer to TianChi. Anonymous asks @ 00:39:43 He is 38 years old and races 70.3s and yet he doesn't have the libido he once had. He knows he isn't 19 any more but still… he would like to try some natural remedies. Email ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com if you want in - it will fill up fast! ----------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick". Audio Question from Adam @ 00:25:16 Wants to know if it is smart to train in the morning when it is cooler or to train in the heat of the day (thinking back to a study that showed heat training had similar benefits to training at altitude). Also, would it differ depending on the type of workout (speed vs. base training). The marathon he is training for is not in any extreme heat. ~ In my response to Adam I mention: Proteolytic Enzymes, Trace Liquid Mineral, and Fish Oil. Audio Question from Dee @ 00:35:14 Has heard Ben talk about minimalist run training that doesn't require you to run as much mileage as traditional training programs do. She has completed 4 marathons following the Hal Higdon plan. Would like to know more about the minimalistic training idea because she is not sold on it and thinks she would do better on the higher mileage plans. She has PRed at every race while actually increasing her training mileage. ~ In my response, I mention www.marathondominator.com and the interview I did on the Rich Roll Podcast. Audio Question from Johnny @ 00:40:01 He is looking for advice on what to grow in his garden to give him the most bang for his buck. He wants the "most superhuman fit garden as possible". Blueberries grow well where he lives - should he use the entire space (40 x 20 feet) for blueberries? ~ In my response to Johnny, I mention "Azomite". Audio Question from Bob @ 00:47:44 He read the article on the website "The Fibre Menace" and finds it very misleading and contrary to what he has experienced. He has IBS and Constipation and gets a lot of relief from psyllium husk powder but not from vegetables. He would like to get your opinion on the paper written Yikyung Park about fibre as a treatment for cancer among other benefits. Audio Question from Frances @ 00:54:07 She is 35 years old and currently 9 weeks pregnant with her second baby. She has heard that she should be able to remain at the same activity level as she was before the pregnancy but she is currently having trouble lifting her head off the couch. What can she do to try stay in the best condition possible so she doesn't lose all the endurance she built training for last year's NYC Marathon (she was in the best shape of her life). Also, she would like to know about any natural mood boosters that are safe for pregnancy. She is depressed and anxious and has insomnia. ~ In my response to Frances I reference this interview with Cassandra Forsythe. Also this article on core exercises for pregnancy. For mental function, I recommend: Alpha-GPC, Glutamine, Acetyl L Carnitine, Phosphatidylserine, Low Blue Lights, and Better Baby book. Audio Question from Isaac @ 01:03:01 Would a plyometrics, speed and quickness workout be even more effective if done after a hard lower body weight lifting session? You've talked about doing an explosive exercise immediately after lifting but he is wondering about and entire plyo set after a an entire weight session. ~ In my response to Isaac I mention: Triglyeride based fish oil for enhanced nerve function, 2-4g/day. Recommend SuperEssentials and TwinLab Cod Liver Oil. Choline – 250-500mg daily – Recommend TwinLabs. L-Tyrosine - 0.5-2g, 20-45 minutes prior – Recommend NOW Foods. Green Tea Extract - 400-500mg EGCG equivalent per day. Recommend delta-E. Vitamin B Complex. Recommend delta-E.
