Saying no in a way that stems from your identity and using words like I don't is more empowering and effective in persuading the other person. When saying no, it's important to remember that it is about you and not a rejection of the other person. By giving voice to your values, priorities, preferences, and beliefs, you are not making it personal or a rejection of the other person. This approach changes the dynamic and allows you to maintain or even strengthen the relationship.

When someone asks us to do something we don’t want to do, we often say yes even though we want to say no, because we think that saying no will feel terrible. But my guest, Dr. Vanessa Patrick, says the opposite is true: we actually feel great when we say no.

So why do we have such a hard time doing so?
