The Effects of Melatonin and Other Sleep Aids

Melatonin, even at low doses, can have negative effects on the onset of puberty by suppressing hormones. Taking high doses can disrupt the HPA axis and pituitary to gonad axis. Magnesium glycinate and magnesium three and eight can promote relaxation and aid in falling asleep. Theanine activates the GABA system and should be taken before bed. Apogenin, a derivative of chamomile, helps in transitioning to sleep smoothly by activating chloride conductance. Avoid 5-HTP and Tryptophan if they cause overstimulation and disrupt sleep patterns.
